"Grenfell: In the Words of Survivors": Survivor Recounts Deadly 2017 London Fire That Inspired Play

The play Grenfell: In the Words of Survivors tells the story of the 2017 apartment fire at Grenfell Tower in London that killed 72 people. It was the worst fire in Britain since World War II, and survivors blamed the government for mismanaging the public housing block and neglecting maintenance. The play tells the story of how the residents of Grenfell Tower, from the Caribbean, Portugal, Syria, Morocco, Ethiopia and Britain, created a thriving community even as their homes fell into disrepair in the years before the fire. Playwright Gillian Slovo says she was moved to create the play after watching "in absolute horror as that building burned," wondering how such a tragedy could happen in one of the richest neighborhoods of London. We also hear from Grenfell survivor Ed Daffarn, who barely escaped the inferno with his life. "I'm here. It's like a million-to-one chance," Daffarn says.

The question I raise is: why bother coming to the UK, a place that is not safe for you? Let's have some respect and pride and build our own nations instead. The two women who persistently advocated and sent multiple emails to the racist councils were both threatened by the council's solicitors. Tragically, both women died in the fire.
Whether there's a delay or not, the investigation remains a whitewash.

This is not a race issue it's a class issue. Those minorities were able to elect their own representatives they can hold accountable, but don't. That's the reason they had to flee their own countries in the first place. Who do you think Western Imperialist use to colonise people? Exactly, their corrupt representatives. If they can't find any, they use your neighbours.

That’s really weird. I’ve never heard of people being told to stay in a burning building 🤔 Is this common practice in the Uk?
This also happened on 9/11. People that were escaping the towers were made to go back inside by authorities.
I think it's common in high rises, they're supposed to be built so that a fire starting in one unit doesn't propagate to others, or at least is seriously slowed down. So unless you're living directly against or above the place where the fire started, it's safer to stay put in your closed-off apartment, than try to evacuate everyone in a rush (panic) in possibly smoke-filled stairs.
It's a particular design. These blocks were specifically designed with this safety in mind, in the 60s & 70s. The architectural principle is 'compartmentation', and it was probably built like that because there was only one staircase. The famous Trellick Tower in the same borough, is designed similarly. My mum's house is opposite Trellick, and we've witnessed a couple of such fires in that block over the decades. Both fires were contained in situ as per design. The other issue at Grenfell was that communal areas and fire alarms had been neglected by the landlord, and not many inspections had been done over the years to ensure that the integrity of fire doors were up to standard, and crucially, that the electric wiring was maintained (the ignition of the fire but not the reason the fire became an inferno - that was the newly installed external cladding).
They weren't told that the cladding was dangerous.
