We took this video to show you how to replace an Ignition Coil on a BMW e46. It is almost the same procedure for all e46 equipped with the 6 cylinder engine.
If you have Codes such as:
    P0301 - cylinder 1 misfire
    P0302 - cylinder 2 misfire
    P0303 - cylinder 3 misfire
    P0304 - cylinder 4 misfire
    P0305 - cylinder 5 misfire
    P0306 - cylinder 6 misfire
95% Percent of the time is ignition coil. If this does not fix then it is a spark plug and if this does not work then the wire got pinched somewhere.
It is the same precedure for after the facelift:
    2002 BMW E46
    2003 BMW E46
    2004 BMW E46
    2005 BMW E46
For before the facelift, it is almost the same procedure except the that ignition coil looks different and it attaches with two bolts to the head:
    1999 Bmw E46
    2000 Bmw E46
    2001 Bmw E46

I just have to say I love your assistants OU shirt! I was born and raised in Norman OK and was a Med Major there! I have a question my e46 has 177k on it, it's always been throughly maintained and I've had the dealership tell me when they run all the test the engine shows results like it wa brand new. Do you think it would be okay just to go ahead and change them all, I found a set on eBay from a very top rated seller and people are going on and on about how happy and how wonderful their coils work. So would you think changing all six is bad? We changed the spark plugs to the very high end quad fire last year and it gave it so much more response and a much deeper more powerful sound. We had it custom ability and we purchased the touring option where we got to see it on the got to see it in the factory and was able to drive around Germany for a week, staying in these amazing Bed and Breakfasts. So know everyone we buy we do it, it become a tradition! I'm such a BMW geek lol

    quick question:
My car was running fine yesterday , I was low on fuel ( had about 30 miles left before an empty tank ) .
This morning I turned the car on and it sounded like a Subaru.
    Pulled the codes :
    p303
    p0313
Is there any chance that the low fuel made the car run lean , causing the coil to foul out?
The car also just reached 198,000k on it , owned it since 34k . Never changed the coils out , I did do the spark plugs.

Kiwi Girl, that just hates 2 give up on her car 🤷🏼‍♀️
    Crank But no start!
Please Help, my 2005 330i just died then refused to start again. I've replaced the battery, then the starter, I now have crank & adequate power that I didn't have previously, but it still won't start. I've just seen that when I have key pushed ON I can't get my power tester 2 light up on fuses - 70,46,48 or 43 & get I have previously checked & replaced most the fuses & relays & I think they fine. Please advise?

i owned a bmw 325i e90 2006 and i had cylinder 6 misfire so the problem got fix but my service engine light is still on after i reset it with a obd tool not sure. enigion coil number 6 is all the way inside the engine right 1

    • @WorldMechanics
      @WorldMechanics  Před 8 lety

+Roberto Aguirre yes, 6 is all the way to the back and 1 is the one on the front. Make sure that the wire are all the way in the ignition coil because when you buy a new one sometimes you have to push the wire a little harder. If that does not fix the problem replace number 1 ignition coil with number 6 and see if the engine light will be on and for which cylinder.

I changed spark plugs and problem is not solved. Hope this’ll solve the issue. If not I guess I’ll be in a big trouble.

The original coils he pulled out were BOSCH so if you’re looking for oe parts I suppose that would be BOSCH but I’m not 100% sure
