      Nice explainer mate and well done putting together that shot in a crappy room. Question for you though mate, the A-shot vs the B-shot seem to have two different tints. (At least to my eye). Are you shooting the same camera or is it because the lighting situation is dramatically different from one vantage point to the other? Or am I not seeing it right?

  • @BTMovieSecondChannel
    @BTMovieSecondChannel Před 3 měsíci +5

    Nice look! I definitely think there is too much green in the B-shot though (5:50 for example). Especially in the skin tones. That makes it feel too gloomy. But overall really helpful tutorial and I admire your creativity with the ceiling especially!

    Alex - Can you hear me now? Thank you for this video! I have done corporate videos and commercials in the past and I certainly do know the challenges of overcoming that "office look". I often ask the media team if they have any favorite "well lit" spots, and normally ends up either in the board room or in their own offices.
    I do like your choice of how you lit the subject in this video with only three lights, and adding those pictures to break up the background and provide the "right vibe" for those wide and tight shots. Great tips!

    Great video. Love how you break down the lighting setup. I was surprised that the lens was positioned lower than the eyes/nose area and pointing slightly upward towards the subject. It still looked great but it just caught me off guard at first.

      Hey Mark, thanks I’m glad you liked the video. My goal recently has been to experiment a little with my second camera angle and find an interesting look that feels a bit more experimental.
      Sometimes it works and other times it really doesn’t but oddly enough I felt like this really worked.

    CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW!
    This video reminds me of a project I did a couple of months back, I was in a dark room that had a semi-interesting background in relation to how I positioned my interviewee. I took my Godox V1 speed light, turned on the model lamp (which is warm) and pointed it upward, where it lit up a mosquito net, that softly deflected light into the background. It made for an awesome warm and dramatic shot.
    The day I can afford the big Aputure lights, I'll also definitely shift ceiling tiles around 😅. That was some great improv btw 👏🏾

    I absolutely love this break down, but I can't help but notice how much headspace you leave above. An entire 1/4th of the composition is left above the head blank. Not trying to find little things about the video but I also noticed it on the interview shots which can be classified as a medium tier composition error.

    This is why I’ve been leaving the 300Ds at home and taking the F22 panels. They take up a lot less room when packing and don’t have the depth of those parabolics. It can literally be flush against the ceiling. If you’re using diffusion in front of a para you don’t need a para. Mostly I save the domes for when I really need them and maybe just use an inner baffle.

    I was in a situation like this last week. Client rented a studio room 3 flights upstairs in a building with no elevator. That was the 1st sign of a WTF moment as I had to haul all my gear up 3 very long flights of stairs. Then to get to the 10 x 10 room. With not much decoration inside. The ceilings were super low (not drop ceiling) so I didn’t have your option. Oh course the client was wearing glasses and didn’t want to take them off as it wasn’t “his look” so I wasn’t able to get the key light up high enough to avoid major reflections of the softbox showing on his glasses. Do you think I would have been better off bouncing the bare Apature light off the ceiling in that case to avoid reflection in glasses? It really annoyed me I couldn’t avoid that. But yeah it was one of those days 🤣

    You gotta get an Amaran F22c Lite Mat. That was a game changer for me. Those big soft boxes are great and look cool but there are sooooo many times where it's just hard to fit it in the space and a light mat is a god send.

      😂😂😂😂 yeah man seriously. The worst part is that we had six hours to film an interview and B roll for a 15 minute documentary. 😆

      @@Alexzarfatifilms If only I had the luxury of 6 hours. I'm lucky if I get 30 mins on everything including load in and set up. Having to deal with super hyper, ADHD, in a crazy time pinch rush, third party individual who won't let me interact directly with the clients. Can't plan anything in advance, then they put me in a really ugly broom closet and expect this sweeping award winning epic beautifully shot Netflix documentary type look. This is for 85 percent of the work I do, It is frustrating as hell.
