1936 Farmall F30 Needs Head Gasket Before Tractor Show

- Come along as I put a new head gasket on this old tractor and do a few other things to it.

I am 74 now but when I was about 4 my father bought an F-12 from an old man neighbor farmer. In about a weeks time the steel wheels were replaced with rubber tires all around. Next he installed an electrical system with a battery, generator, lights and a starter. The starter was a Chevy starter. He placed the ring gear and support plate between the engine and transmission. Being in central New York State he next made a snow plow for the tractor. Added a hydraulic pump that was belt driven and a hydraulic ram on the front. As I got older it was my job to keep the driveway plowed. I spent many enjoyable hours plowing snow. We also used the tractor to haul wood as every year we would cut usually 10 to 13 cords.
Refreshingly different than other channels. You're most definitely "Old School". Love it.

At 8:30 every night, She who loves me, brings me my Meds for the evening by 9 pm the world is a far bettewr place for me. Tonight after Meds, I happened upon this, and thought now that's gonna be entertaining as hell, watching someone else work, by the way its also my favorite sport. But when you took off across the yard for a " run around the yard a little bit" the Meds were in full effect, and I know for a fact, none of the other viewers of this post enjoyed that run as much as I did. Thank you for the " Trip" around the yard:)

I grew up in the country. We didn't have a farm, but there were farms all around us and that's where i made most of my spending money. that old tractor reminds me of the ones I saw plowing the fields back then!

👍🇺🇸Ol feller down in Brooks GA had a sorta hobby tractor restore shop. I found out that lots of old tractor gears & parts were interchangeable. Helped him out a bit and learned the old school way. Good stuff. Thx ✌️
My dad had an old F-30. I remember helping him work on it when I was a kid. I love old tractors and this channel. I can relate to what you do on here more than I can with anybody else’s content. Probably because you’re closer to my age than a lot of the other guys lol.

I’ve rebuilt a lot of 140 engines and the tractor dealership said torque the head bolts to 80 ft lbs so ur syphering was spot on

Love this, I remember driving a John Deer B model for my uncle, between the hand clutch. the trip plows, the throttle, and the brakes was way too much for a 12-year-old to figure out!!
If you are using modern champion plugs we’ve had a lot of trouble with them including hard starts. Went to autolites and have had really good results. Also I don’t know if that would be old enough or not but old Mc cormick stuff used cork floats and would sometimes swell and stick in the bowl causing flooding issues. Love the channel!
I almost always use autolite on everything. As far as I remember it's got a brass float. I really think the timing was the issue. On a John Deere B you want the magneto to snap right at TDC so I figured that's what this one might need too.

I love everything about those old tractors, but my favourite part definately is the steering solution. Think about it for a minute or two. You have build yourself a tractor on a frame, working like a dream, and then you realise "Shoot, it has to steer too". Well, this is how that works out. All's well that ends well 🙂One has to realize these tractors were used as stationary motors driving a belt as much as driving tractors pulling stuff.

Yeah, when I use rtv for gasket making I'll put it on the part then let it set for an hour before installing. Seems to work pretty well.
That is a big old beast F30s are getting scarce. The sound oh baby, now that's a Farmall all right. Hard to think back to those days they came like that, no mufflers! Put some Boiled linseed oil on her to get some shine! P.s I think these Rigs used an oil system called "Total loss" or something like that. Oh and that 2500 lb head bit got me rolling!! lord jesus. haha. If only they still made stuff like that.
One thing that makes your channel so good is the editing. You don't show too much or too little. Well done!
The space between the toolbox and gas tank bracket is a good place to hang your crank from. I used that for many years, the only time it came out is when the tractor tipped over.

As kid would be on ole jd 2 banger in low range through orange grove he'd be behind tractor with hand plow on chain behind tractor he'd plant field peas zipper white acre peas between rows of orange trees he'd just make shallow furrows in sugar sand love the old iron ty again for memories god bless you
That is a great old machine, and a fun video. I was hurting along with you when I saw you removing the cylinder head. I was hoping you would have used the engine hoist to lift it. I have done a lot of work on big block Chevies, and those heads weigh 70 lbs. In later years, I got into the habit of letting the engine hoist do the lifting for me.
I helped my dad farm with a 1929 farmall regular ,, it was the predecessor of the f20 and f30... it had open steering gears,,, no water pump, was a 3 speed trans, rated 9 hp drawbar 18 on pto..always started on 2nd pull,, we pulled 2 bottom 16'' plow ,, They didnt have cabs or air cond but they got the job done with out computers...

Very cool watching you work on that Farmall, certainly seems to be running much better after all the after you put into it. I'm a typical New England swamp Yankee 😂 I grew up in a garage that my father owned and learn body work and auto mechanics but I am a carpenter that specializes in historic restorations for trade. Whatever arises I tackle. All respect to you 👍☮️🇺🇲
That was really interesting. I had never seen an oiling system like that for a valve train. The info on the timing was nice too. Really fun video;)
They used the same kind of loobie doob on Bugattis and Salmsons back in the 20/30s. But racing cars only run for an hour or two at a time... As with much old engineering solutions, it was better than nothing...

I use to own a 39 model M that ran really good and I sold it about 15 years ago.
Excellent video Chad :) I remember that tractor my late Uncle Fred bought new then when he past his Brother Jack my other uncle got also when motor gave Jack put a Chevrolet in line GM 235 Cubic Inches 6 cylinder also put crank shaft pulley from old 4 cylinder plus wide up front end too and made 12 volt Negative ground! That was 1968 and that tractor now in Farm Mesumn near me since 2010 ! But have share crank old farm tractors also combine to over years too be farm boy growing up also old 1950 Cockshutt COOP 40 my late Grandfather Bill Cann Sr bought new in Brampton Ontario Canada plant made the tractor had Buta Motor 235 Cubic Inches size 6 cylinder with Zenith 1 barrel carb up draft plus 43 hp also 60 torque also 6 volt positive ground electronic start with crank option too with 60 Amp Delco Remy Generator! 1950 my uncle Bill 16 years old drove east to Port Hope Ontario Canada to farm in 2 weeks get home with it ! My late Grandfather Bill past away in 1977 he gave tractor to my late Uncle Bill JR and my dad Don on farm keep going but 1993 motor screw up by bearing went on piston to crank plus oil pump gear and distributor gear too got chew up to motor too so was sold for parts ! Do remember crank that when Generator went also starter Solilendo to plus 6 volt battery to on farm ! Plus 1968 McCormick International 105C combine with Farmall H basic gas motor 4 cylinder bore up 202 Cubic Cm had Crank Pulley also Electric Starter need rebuilt too how we crank we be loader tractor bucket plus lift by my dad also my uncle Bill plus me in bucket to crank 4 rounds fast Lol !
I bought an F-30 at our local FFA auction a few years ago, its stuck, hope to get on it soon! I never had much luck with reusing the old head gasket, maybe once on one of my 1931 Allis-Chalmers UC tractors (I have 3) with a Continental S10 flathead 4 cylinder engine. I learned neat things in your video! I have alot of IH projects, one is an electric start 1939 F20 with an IH 2M corn picker mounted on it

If you glue that valve cover gasket to the valve cover with "yellow-snot" 3m weather stripping cement it'll line up everytime! And seal perfectly.
That's not the problem, valve cover is bent and actually a little too big.
Tensed up a little hoping that ladder didn't go sideways on you.
that's a nice f-30, It looks so original. Your the first person I've ever seen work on one, all though,
seems simular to an F-20. Thanks for figuring out a solution,and explaining the rocker oiler. old way and new way. I guess in 1930's they didn't much of an idea to keep them oiled up on top. drilling
your own holes to let it drain. brilliant, I'm always a chicken to do major little change's example , I wanted a farmall H with a dipstick , didn't want to drill the hole to put in after market, so did all this
work at the slalvage yard to pay and pick up a engine with a dip stick all ready drilled and installed by some one else. Was a 1947 H , for some reason I've seen other's, on 47 farmall h's from that year.

I like that tractor. You are a common sense mechanic for sure. I saw a guy cranking his guts out, but they towed it 8ft and it fired right up. He said when they do a lot of belt work it gets that way. I'd like to see more of that crane under the tree. Good video.

As a kid I remember making gaskets even head gaskets some method but use copper sheet . All so the old tappet cover gasket take a fuel hose cut one side and fit to cover as gasket yes not good on modern engines but the old tractor last for years

I always used a crow foot wrench to torque bolts that are covered when possible, it gives a little different reading so I would get close then adjust my torque wrench to one of the bolts that were already done, I enjoy your videos

A brass ball peen can be used to cut the gasket, use brass only. Maybe a rubberized, similar one on an M value cover. Have you thought about putting a road gear assembly on, it mounts on the front of the transmission, leave the transmission in N and only shift the road gear, it is only in or out.

FYI. Nobody takes a fist grip on the crank. It, likes, breaks thumbs if it kicks back. Couldn't see how you gripped the crank but love your videos!

I had a 1937 version of your tractor a few years ago. We could not kill that thing on the dyno, pulled like crazy too. Ours also had a high speed road gear that you shifted a separate lever while you put the main tyranny in neutral. It did around 16mph but ours was a wide frame so you had trouble trailering it. Currently I have a 1936 Grey F20 narrow rear with high speed gear box.
I think all of these are wide unless you have a narrow tread. Mine barely fits on a deck over trailer. It's scary loading it. I will be building an F20 soon with a road gear.
@@ThisNThatGarage my F20N is only 6ft wide on spokes while the wide was closer to 8ft. I was told the width varied on what you were planting, but the narrow are a little more scarce and wanted do to loading. They also made 2 different add on road gears I can't think of any names, but one was a high and low that ran off the original gearing and the other like I have bolted above your normal drive shaft on the auxiliary under the tank.
Sure would like to see you get one of those roll-around carts to plave all the tools you think you will need for the job and a place to put the pieces and parts you remove . just roll it out to where your working on the stuff

Magnet is probably weak on magneto,, that will make it hard to start! Also try some NGK PLUGS!
Just did the exact same thing to a super a. Antifreeze Even shot off the front axle and sprayed me in the mouth. The first head gasket I torqued to 65 ftlbs and after reading on the intronet the shop manual is wrong. I torqued to 80 and it's fine so far.
I see those old appliances in the background. Are those for lock jaw. Cool tractor and I just love those old spoke rims
