  • A lot of new guitarists in the Gypsy Jazz genre have the same dilemma:
    Should I learn the Rest-Stroke picking method (The Gypsy traditional picking technique) or not?
    There are two main aspects to playing music:
    How to play- right hand technique
    What to play - Your notes and chords
    👉🏼 Get notified when I release my next free guitar tutorial! - SUBSCRIBE to my channel.
    You decide whether you want to take the “what to play” and improve your improvisation, knowledge and skills from Django’s beautiful music, or add the “How to play” and get that special sound as well.
    I LOVE this technique - the sound it produces and the feel of the strings under my pick. But what if you already have a good technique of your own? Is it really worth the trouble to learn the unfamiliar Gypsy Jazz technique? Or maybe it’s enough to learn the special phrases, licks and Django’s ideas for improvisation and add them to your playing without the specific technique?
    The answer is that it’s entirely up to you.
    There are a lot of benefits to Rest Stroke Picking:
    Sound - you’ll get the best sound from your acoustic guitar (not your electric guitar).
    Presence - You’ll sound sharp and the dynamics in your playing will stand out.
    Health - this method fits the natural position of your hand. So, you will probably have less pain when using it.
    Speed - well, you’ve heard the Gypsies - you can play pretty fast with it….
    BUT- Learning a new technique is like learning a new instrument. It requires daily practice and a few months to nail it down. I based my daily practice on Arpeggios, and it is a great way to master the technique!

    Dear Yaakov... Thanks from the heart for that video. Years I play Gipsy jazz more than any other kind of music, years I'm never happy with my right hand technique. I know all the theory, in theory, saw all the videos I could find, read all the methods I could find, spoke and played with great and really great musicians... I'm not a too bad guitar player too, I hope... but I never found someone showing and explaining rest stroke picking technique slowly enough, in a way I can really understand it, perfecting it, breaking my insatisfaction, until you. Your video is perfect and help me a lot! Greetings from Switzerland

    Hi Yaakov, yes I agree with you, playing a gypsy guitar is a real turning point that soft string amplified guitars was lacking. The soul and spirit playing the gypsy guitar can't be expreesed except by putting time in on it.
    I've always like your advice. Thanks

    Yes, I saw on another video said that Oud and Gypsy Jazz are using the same picking technique, I was so surprised. I love Oud as well.

      Yay, yes it is wonderful! Oud is a great instrument. If you play both, you can notice the similarities and differences.

    Is downstroke playing using mostly the elbow how most of the great players in the style play? I thought many of them use mainly the wrist. But maybe the weight of the forearm by itself adds to the wrist movement with downstrokes, for some players?

    • @GypsyAndJazz
      @GypsyAndJazz  Před rokem

      Yes, the downstroke from the elbow is a key part of this style and is essential to the authentic sound. When the wrist is loose, you'll see it move as a result of the forearm movement, but the action is initiated higher up and we let gravity do some of the work as you have guessed.

    So, if you need to go the other direction, like sweep upwards in a fast way, in this style of picking you just pick every note with reststroke....isn't it ineffective?

    • @GypsyAndJazz
      @GypsyAndJazz  Před 2 lety

      It's just not this style. Quick upstrokes are used over chords, like in la pompe.

    I often pick wrong string when I hit rest stroke hard and fast, how to practice to improve accuracy?THX

    • @GypsyAndJazz
      @GypsyAndJazz  Před 4 lety

      You need to make sure that your movements are correct. Than you need to play very slowly, the same exercise every day. Play only in a tempo that is easy for you and that the sound is clear. If you practice the same thing every day, accurately, I'm sure that you'll see an improvement after a few weeks and you'll be able to increase the tempo. Feel free to keep me update at my email: info@gypsyandjazz.com
      Good luck!
