I get the importance of eating something before a run. I always prefer mageu (popular with runners in South Africa), banana or orange. However, I really struggle to eat real breakfast before the morning run.

Thanks! I've had meat balls today for lunch and heavy dinner then I hit for a run I didn't go so well, out of breath, heavy and dry. I used to not eat a lot in running days. I've watched many videos about the food, but you really got it and cleared everything about choosing the best for us. Thanks again!

A banana and 20 miles....that’s a beast. I’m that guy who has to get up @ 4am to eat a proper meal for a 20 mile run.

Meal replacement powders (Huel and the like) are super handy, can drink one and head out for an easy run pretty quick

Jason, thank you for covering this topic.
At the beginning I used to struggle with food before my run, especially long run or intense speed workouts.
Now I have no problems at all. After 3.5 years of running a glass of water is really enough regardless of the type of run. It can be interval session or tempo run or just recovery run, or even long run.
Good point at the end. Everyone is different!
You need to find what works for you.

Sometimes I think it is good to train your body to take on more food before a run. As someone that has typically done all my morning exercise fasted I have adjusted to eating before, partly just to get 3500+Kcal a day in

Is it true that some say running on empty stomach trains the body to burn fat as fuel more efficiently? I have been running/training 42km on empty stomach twice weekly. Not sure if it is right way to do it. Oh by the way I do take 1 tablet electrolyte salt stick every 10km. Is it recommended? Some say unnecessary. So many school of thoughts. A bit confused who is right.

I prefer to train empty, especially when doing a hard long sprint interval workout where I'm pushing my heart rate to the max. I train at sunset, and usually I can't have eaten within 5 hrs of the workout. This guy talks about a workouts 'over an hour' .... as a masters sprinter if I do 5 minutes of actual sprinting, that is a huge workout. 4x200m w/ 1 min rest takes about 5 min. 4x300m w/ 2 min rest takes less than 9 min. If you have food in your stomach when you do workouts like this, you'll get sick

Specific foods should be based on what you enjoy and what agrees with you. But in general, yes those sound great! We cover fueling in much more detail in Finish Strong: bit.ly/2oYOrzQ

@@martinjnagy i think he means before he run, not all day. I also do that with a banana, it helps also with cramping up
