Ize Eze I think they know were they are heading in the different pieces. Between that a lot of impro, and just go with the flow.. A rehearsed jam - That's what I would call it. :)
+Ignacio Pezo yeah Omar wrote all of this, they said so in an interview, and i dont understand why some of you fucks that probably dont even play music have anything to say, its about the energy and how it fills in with the vibe at the moment, if you knew about music werre not in medieval times where certain scales and chords were prohibited and everything was based on simple cadences etc, we can RECORD our music now to the point that from MY view. Music at its greatest even surpasses Cinema in all of the imagery which is actually sound and is interpreted by the audience in its like a telepathic way, its like the telepathic way of making movies to me. has nohing to do with any rules, its Art dawg
This is some of the best music I’ve ever heard. Transcendent. It trips me out, I can listen to it and enjoy it every time. Plus John and Flea are gold together anyway and Omar is amazing as well especially with John.
Lol, I guess they both involve somewhat similar arpeggios, but the riff that starts at 2:16 is far more similar to "tetragrammaton" by Omar's most noted project "the Mars Volta". John Frusciante's part here is also something straight out of the tmv playbook, albeit with more of a "De-loused in the Comatorium" vibe.
I love some of the guitar work of theMarsVolta, but to be honest, he sounded like crap here a lot - sounded at times like he was randomly hitting the notes, LMAO - Omar is the still the man though
Slowing down the video helps if you want to play along. Introduction is in E minor, both guitars strumming on a single note idea on E. I can't get the first two-part bass riff but It goes Em-C-Bm then ends on G. Now repeated but this time Em-Dm-Gma7-C#m-C. Then fade out and cue the bass riff. It''s the notes E, G, B and C, with some variations. With the bass riff going, Omar arpeggiates Em7 and John plays a solo on the notes B, G and F# ending on E. 2:57 John plays the notes F#, A, E, G, D#, F#, D and E. Omar and Flea fills it out with the chords F#m, Amajor, E major, G major, B major, Eminor and D. Then back to E minor bass riff amd then the riff at 2:57 again. Main bass riff. Then impro on the chords from the 2:57 riff. John truly blasts away here. 5:33 is a variation of the main bass riff in the key of F#.
Me too. On this thousandth viewing, I'm peaking on a bag of mixed mushrooms. Omar's solo at the end of track one really freaked me out. When he giggles and pushed his glasses back up I fuckin lost it. I'm in tears
I seen the Mars Volta open for RHCP. I will completely honest... I left a few songs into the RHCP set because TMV absolutely destroyed it! That’s a tough show to follow.
I love all the recent comments on this. I remember seeing this many years ago around 2006, right after I saw the chili peppers and the Mars Volta in Albany
we musicians with raw talent fine tune our craft with theory and develop and understand the rules of keys, modes, relative majors and minors etc... only to master and break all rules and chew them up and spit in theories faces!!! this body of art is three modes molded together to create a beautiful master piece...
I'm so curious what happend at 14:20 It seems like John and Flea had some weird feel or something. They always had that connection in RHCP. Amazing stuff.
That's usually the look you give to get ready for a different part coming up... probably signaling that was the last cycle through that riff between going into the quieter bit.
@@LucidLiquidity i was just going to say the same thing... yup, exactly what it was. just signaling to make SURE... that they were in sync with the time. and sure as shit, they nailed it three master musicians... al in sync... all on the same journey.... amazing
@10:45 Frusciante dripping sweat by the end of the first song; then Flea taking off his jacket and shaking his left hand, looking at John like, "DAMN that was off the hook," while Omar's in the background unfazed cause he's the youngest, LOL. Flea was 42 years old here; Omar 29
Musically they absolutely were. John was making a lot of solo music plus Ataxia, TMV made two of my all time favourite albums and the RHCP were fresh off by the way and heading into Stadium Arcadium. Plus people had the sheer good luck of seeing these three titans play together. Underrated period of time musically and so full of genius and creativity.

i swear dude i still hear this in my dreams like 7 years later.
the fact that they have not formed a prog rock band yet is an affront to humanity
Both Frustiante and Flea on Mars Volta records. I'd highly suggest checking into that. They're fantastic as a trio though I agree!
John frusciante played guitar on the amputechture record
I don't understand why people call this a "JAM" it is a masterpiece and is obviuolsy structured and rehersed
Ize Eze I think they know were they are heading in the different pieces.
Between that a lot of impro, and just go with the flow..
A rehearsed jam - That's what I would call it. :)
A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet

Congrats on the 30 upvotes but If you think this was "obviously" rehearsed then you don't play music....
you are the clueless Mathew lol.
bruh omar's color coordination to his guitar
no way!
A meeting of the minds. 3 people having a conversation in a different language. A Different opinion on the same subject and they're all valid.
About time these three did another live show together. 20 years flew by!
you mean 20 years Flea by.
That lapse where Omar is just playing all notes out of scale he can is gold
The nonverbal communication in this video is just adorable
+lynnstacks until John yells NO at 9:12 lol
never seen the flea with so many clothes on
never seen sting play guitar so good
wow long time ago but still have it
no joke, immediately as it started I thought “oh, dude looks like Flea”😂
😂
I’m back at to this video 10 years later. Still amazing!
The sound quality makes this sound like something that came out of a Sega game. I love it.
It does sound midi at some points when they match keys .wild shit.
Flea is genius, omar a crazy scientist and jonh has the flame of victory
Omar is like Jazz where it seems like he plays the wrong notes but it’s exactly whats intended
No matter how much time passes by... this is always pure gold
Wish I could go back and time and see this live. Preferably right after just smoking a joint on the back patio.
I love Omar's solo playing, its so weird that it fits right in, it's like an example to all the early weird noise rock stuff.
Thank god this upload still exists
I genuinely believe this is one of the greatest jams humanity has ever come up with collectively
Fact that each take turns to put there mix in while other two just chill back awesome
It’s like a real life end game raid…
Damn ya it’s kinda retro bossy. Shit..
I believe that too
The look on Flea and Omar's faces around 5:16 is priceless 🤣
"John? .... John?!"
this is a straight up castlevania dungeon soundtrack
This still rips in 2020
This is some of the best music I’ve ever heard. Transcendent. It trips me out, I can listen to it and enjoy it every time. Plus John and Flea are gold together anyway and Omar is amazing as well especially with John.
Musical level god
2:16 Flea playing the bass line to the theme song of 'Stranger Things' 12 years prior :P

MisterJawaman you caught that as well.. good one
WHAT.ON.EARTH.CAN'T.UNHEAR.IT
That zone you're in while playing something like this with others is the best feeling.
Very early 80's King Crimson like at times. Not surprising though considering the influence Fripp had on Omar.
All True Masters
Probably one of the greatest things I've ever seen or heard in my life, like ever.
Far out mang.
Can't help but imagine deantoni parks drumming over this...
It's too bad there wasn't a drummer there...Guess it's still cool as is
I wonder if an IA can add dums to it...
A hidden gem in the greater spectrum of modern music. Please keep this video up as long as possible, it is an important piece of music genius.
Imma download it and reupload it if it's ever gone
It's so funny how almost 20 years later some people still don't get Omar
I love some of the guitar work of theMarsVolta, but to be honest, he sounded like crap here a lot - sounded at times like he was randomly hitting the notes, LMAO - Omar is the still the man though

+Arman Dhani Bustomi Thank you, my brother, much love, I hope to do a tutorial on this on my channel if there is a crowd for it.
@@Mrius86there definitely is!
If your mind isn’t blown away from this. Then see you later. Fucking awesome
This was so fucking amazing. Visceral. Savage.
I don´t know how often I watched this and I come back, again and again and again. It is just out of this world - masterminds!
Same here, I get lost in it and I find peace
Third, to admit I do the same.
Me too. On this thousandth viewing, I'm peaking on a bag of mixed mushrooms. Omar's solo at the end of track one really freaked me out. When he giggles and pushed his glasses back up I fuckin lost it. I'm in tears
Also, that exact bit between 15:05 and 15:15. I'm gonna need the 12 minute post rock version, stat
@@andrewoverhere8525 hope you had a nice trip dude :)
Come back to this years later and it still sounds as fresh the first time I heard it. THIS IS A MASTERPIECE TRY CHANGING MY MIND!!!!
3 legends. This is the modern day equivalent of seeing Jimi Hendrix jamming with BB King and Eric Clapton in some dive.
Totally agreed. Omar gives so much Hendrix vibes
Omar always showcase why he’s top 10 of everything
9:45 visibly pissed at sound settings so decided to stop mid riff and adjust lollllll
For some reason Omar always makes me think of space ghost and I love it
art, would kill for this live
i always come back to this eventually. so good
Same
I was lucky enough to see ATDI and RHCP both live once, amazing experiences.
I seen the Mars Volta open for RHCP. I will completely honest... I left a few songs into the RHCP set because TMV absolutely destroyed it! That’s a tough show to follow.
@@christopherlopez2491 thats funny, what songs did The Mars Volta play?
Wow, some fortunate sons of bitches. Couldn’t imagine..
@@gumshake689 that was 2006. They were playing amputechture with some Frances and deloused. I’ll leave it at that.
Flea is such a BEAST
I love all the recent comments on this. I remember seeing this many years ago around 2006, right after I saw the chili peppers and the Mars Volta in Albany
This isnt a song, its a meditation/exercise
This is the stuff of legends
Please everyone, suggest me more as magical live performances as this one. This is like the best of all time!
Woodkid + Son Lux "Easy"
Couldn’t agree more
I wish they would do this kind of shit more often. So good
I can tell you that this 3 persons REALLY REALLY love King Crimson !
ratiugsound my thoughts exacty
ratiugsound or maybe king crimson really likes steve reich, john cage, stockhausen etc and these three persons do too
im pretty sure thats what brought this together
This sick cosmic addictive performance must be the most shocking, beautiful, mesmerizing and impressive thing my senses have ever perceived.
I was there that night... one of the most incredible things I've ever seen. 😯🔥🔥🔥
Wowww how cool u were there!!!
So lucky man
Amazing you can still see after staring at the sun for 20:26
Seeing this for the first time. 😳🤯 WOW
That's me today. Glad i found it.

Can't believe this was 17 years ago
I'm pretty sure Coltrane would have joined this jam. In an imaginary world this would be a revelation. This jam is a Dope.
I'm so proud omar from el paso TX and has musical gods wanting to jam with him.
Best Session ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are REAL musicians!!!!!
The riff frusciante is playing in the second song is so ridiculous, always amazing 🥂
16:00 is like the clouds opening up and the sun coming through after a wild storm
Nice sonic analogy of yours
Holy shit
indeed.
My hands are cramping just watching this. These guys are so good.
I always keep comin back to THISSSS UGH
I love this so much
Yes definitely an amazing show
Lucky people at that show
Omar is from Frank Zappa's School/conception of the guitar. Unpreddictable and free.

14:22 when they all realize they are synced in the perfect jam
Flea the goat
Imagine this lineup plus Robert Fripp and Josh Homme. 🤯
I can dream...
9:30 your face when you realise that u r playing with Omar and Flea at the same time
14:20 both heads going up at the same time and them both nodding like: Yeah we are literally the same person right now.
is for the change omar make
