It's been over a month since Kyle Walker has started for Manchester City in the Premier League. He's still one of the best full-backs in the Premier League, but why hasn't Pep Guardiola been playing him?

Pep Guardiola always reinvents his approach to his philosophy, always challenging his players . He created a system that made cancelo the best itw, now the new system means he can't get a game . That's how ruthless pep is in never stagnating and always challenging his players to get better, to become smarter or they will have to depart ways . When I look at another great manager like Klopp , he seems to struggle with this concept, Liverpool look like a team that's tired of being ultra repetitive , everyone knows how Liverpool will play and mentally the players look drained . I think the idea of constant reinvention at the highest level is very important .
Iâm prettyâs sure Klopp also wants to reinvent his team many times. Itâs just impossible for him to do it that quickly. Not all managers have the kind of money pep has. If pep wants to âreinventâ his team, City board will give him 500 mil to buy all the players he needs to do his reinventing. Klopp doesnât have that. If he wants to reinvent his team, he would probably need a few seasons to do so.
Every manager does not have the luxury tha pep has
Agreed
Guardiola prevent and change, Klopp imagine it will last forever
@@mng-kz7fr what do you mean , weâve LITERALLY only brought it haaland and Alvarez and akanji for LESS than 90mill , the only 3 players that have slotted into the new first team philosophy, of which Alvarez isnât even a starter so it really just two . He didnât do a CLEAN SWEEP of 10 plus players in the name of reinvention, that excuse is dead tbh
I'm convinced pep is a wizard I feel like he gets so bored of winning that he does random stuff and hopes it doesn't work but then it does as he's a wizard. There team minus haaland has no pace at all yet, they bully teams
No pace you say? Grealish, Mahrez, Walker, Bernado, Alvarez are all speed merchants. Before that there were Sterling and Jesus.
@@akwilson1676 bernardo doesnt have much pacr, nor grealish and especially not mahrez
â@@akwilson1676 A good speed merchant would have little speed, because they would have sold it?
They have fast players but they don't really need speedsters and makes sense they got dribblers instead considering how they keep possession.
@@SarveshSingh-ru8zv How is Grealish not fast? Mahrez has been consistently one of the faster Man City players over the past seasons. Bernado being not that fast I can agree.

Insane that Ederson has a 98.7% success rate in medium length passes
If only he was that good in short ones
CBs split wide during both build up and ball recoveries situations so it kinda make sense.
@fciamberlini His short pass is 99%
His long pass is like 73% and overall pass accuracy is 86%

Thatâs the real reason

Well actually looked like he lost a step, I think if he was still as fast pep would play him more
Pep changing his system for 4 center backs is just so Pep. He's just relentless with experimentation.
He hasn't changed the system. It's exactly the same. The only difference is they don't have any FBs now. So they have to play CBs. Walker has been playing as the 3rd CB for years.
@@russellward4624 "It's exactly the same. The only difference is they don't have players in 2 key positions anymore."
Heâs copying Joachim Lowe 2014 World Cup.
It was too easy winning the League a striker, so won them without them. Then everyone said he gay the best full backs in the league, so he said fine Iâll get rid of them and win it without my inverted fullbacks
@@colinedelman6392 Joachim Lowe lol. This bro thinks that having 4 CB to defend rather than attacking and occupying places in the midfield is the same thing đč

Hopefully not, walker can't cross
Number 9? đ
â@@aaquibtayyabi that's cap. Look how many titles they've won with kyle. He's a different player, every team needs players that have different attributes, he just doesn't fit into this system. Doesn't mean he isn't good.

Jus came here to give you your props. Watching Walker as a winger against Leicester.
Kyle is being reserved for Vini, specifically. He is injury prone and they don't want to risk him getting an injury before the Madrid clash. Akanji will either play the Stones role or he will bench
after seeing ake/akanji against bayern's pacy wingers though, I would still back them against Vinicius
@@packrunnerdarsh2231 That's exactly how they mitigated fast wingers without fast fullbacks. Left/Right sided centre backs will press as the ball come to their side for Coman/Sane since they are not too high. Meanwhile either Rodri/Stones dropping in as CB during recovery given time by wingers already being pressed.

That's one thing I love about having Pep at City, the team evolves almost every week but it does mean that some players randomly seem to fall out of favour without any kind of dip in form. Other than Haaland it's a nightmare for Fantasy Football.
I have faith Kyle walker can convert into a RCB considering heâs been asked to do that role for both pep and southgate. Kyle is a proper professional and one of my favorite players he can no doubt impress if heâs able to adjust his game đ„
Yea he has, but pep prefer akanji over walker now
It's actually a bit different. Walker as RCB with England has wingbacks helping him during the buildup so he doesn't have to make progressive passes himself. While current Pep's system requires CBs to be able to do so but that's not Walker strength. One solution might be having CMs or winger dropping deeper to help him out but that would give up pressures and spaces up front.
Despite his struggles in the champions league, it's these types of reinvention that make people like Pep. Me thinking Pep is great doesn't mean he is without flaws or that he's the greatest ever, it just means that I enjoy what he brings to the game, and I enjoy how his teams play.
Yup, he was always tried something new to the team
Tournament games are always harsh. A knockout game can be won in just the slightest moment. Unfortunately it doesn't work out well for him as he changed things trying to get the upper hand in certain games. People say he overthinks but it's more like he's not lazy and don't want to keep doing the same thing until it fails.
Also it's why teams with great focus in defending tend to do well in tournament games. Chelsea is known for that. Ancelotti is great at picking the right player for certain approaches to the game. Sir Alex always has focused and determined squad. Pep's Barca was just too good for the time so people started to study more complex tactics in following years leading to better small teams nowadays.
Bruh he tried something new in the champions league final vs Chelsea and it was his biggest mistake ever lol
âHe tends to offer a very safe option which is always backwardâ
That sound exactly like Spurs.
Because he's physically gifted but as thick as mince.
Not because he's been a naughty boy of course

Pep was kinda forced to rush this double dm system once tht Kyle Walker news came out
Watching JJ is the most enjoyable time of the day! Top analyst!
Has a lovely way about him.
For sure â€
He needs his own show
I think it is amazing how quickly Pep has adapted his system to incorporate Haaland. They were struggling a bit (by their standards) after the World Cup but since they have switched to the 3 cb system they have looked unstoppable. I am not sure I agree that Walker will be bought in to cover Vini jr, seems difficult to ask a player to come in for one game, especially such an important game, after not playing for months.
Its pretty ironic if man city wins champions league this year with 4 CBs and a traditional no 9 after all these years
Agreed. I'm just worried that once again Pep may decide to not-do-what-everyone-would and not play Kyle Walker to try to cancel Vinicius's threat. I've loved watching KW deal with Mbappe because he's a rare skilled defender who can match his pace, and it seems really obvious that he's also the best defense against Real Madrid's biggest threat. But with Pep, you never know, he might start without a RB or ask Haaland to play there!
â@@yevanterrien1713Real Madrid have Rodrygo on the other flank
@@engineerprofessor4377 True! He's really their silent killer atm (he makes me think of Jota in a way, does not look like much but terribly quick, intelligent, and efficient). I guess I was being a bit fixated on the big talking point and a slightly outdated image of RM. I guess defending vs Benzema, Rodrigo, and even Valverde is more of a collective job, but let's say that as a Liverpool fan I wish my team could put Walker (or Akanji, or anyone!) against Vinicius instead of Trent...
Real Madrid fixture will be a tough one. Will really test Pep's tactical abilities.
Pep saw this video and thought, "nah fam".
He's playing right now as we speak.
as a city fan i genuinely hope walker gets his place back in the squad as he has stayed with us and he could be the vital peace to defending against the likes of leao and vini
Nothing says pep roulette more than bringing this video out and then a few hours later he's in the starting lineup
It's just that at times, in the evening kick offs, Kyle Walker simply leaves himself too open in a position lower down the pitch, thereby exposing his frontline whilst seemingly shouting "wahaaay"
You got 4 big lad then rodri can drop and now you got 5 big lads đ
The man's a Top analyst
Madrid vs City will be boxoffice. How City decide to line up against Vinicius will be very interesting.
Iâm still not sure Walker starts. City just played against a Bayern team playing Sane, Gnabry, Coman, ManĂ© yet he still couldnât get into the squad
Walker had him on strings in the 2nd leg, and if it were not for the world cup Fernandino would have crushed Vinicius's leg
This will age badly mark my words Chelsea are gonna win 8-0 at the Bridge
â@@scipioafricanus2212 This comment sponsored by Todd Boehly advised by James Corden
He is training Akanj in premier league to do that
Switching the positions of Stones & Joelinton are the kind of bold, intelligent strategic decisions that deserve more plaudits
It seems like plenty of Pep players have both benefited been cast aside because of his tactical shifts. Nathan Ake & John Stones were not mainstays in past seasons. Now they both seem quite irreplaceable. Cancelo was arguably the best full back itw last season. In less than year he plays for a different club. That's unheard of.
Hilarious that in the very same day this video went out, Walker played a full 90 minutes đ Seemingly as a forward?! Pep always finds a way đ€·đ»ââïž Or was he just trolling you guys?! đ
People are commenting on Pep specifically, but this has been a meta shift weâre seeing more and more of lately. Arteta started the season doing it with Ben White. It was something I believe De Zerbi was experimenting with and Xavi tried. Maybe due to necessity last season compared to now but Pep does have a knack for recognizing good ideas other teams employ and incorporating them into his teams. The biggest thorn in his side are the teams with no real system. Sort of like how Real Madrid allows their galacticos to figure it out in the game.
Mate, Real Madrid had no 'galacticos' for a while now. They have good players, big game players but no galacticos since CR7 departed. Tournament games, especially knockouts, are all about clutch players in clutch moments. Real Madrid somehow keep producing those clutch players.
@@nikpalagaming8610 None of what you said makes sense. Benzema? Modric? Kroos? Those guys are galacticos. 2 of them have Ballon d'Ors. You could probably include Rudiger & Alaba in that as well. Especially Alaba since he'd won everything. Real Madrid doesn't produce them, they buy them. It's no longer financially viable so they're trying to get them younger or on a free, but they still have some in their roster. Further, Ancelotti is known to manage by letting the players make many of the decisions about the tactics & the formations. It's why he's so adaptable. He relies on the leaders on the field. That also means, Modric & Kroos are insanely good at making the appropriate adjustments in-game. You can also see Benzema shifting his playstyle according to their shifts. Because they have to run themselves, they basically have to be mentality monsters on their own. That's why they're clutch though. They've seen & done it all and know how they solved those problems before.
@@nikpalagaming8610 Do you even know what galacticos mean? Hazard costs 100m and somehow he isnt a galactico? bruh. 0 player in their starting XI from last year UCL final came from their youth system, but sure they kept "producing" them, stick to gaming content.
â@@PenaldianSome played in Castilla.
Their 2016-2018 team were Galacticos but now theyâre a very well balanced team with experienced and young players both - with the benefit of the experienced ones being some of the best in the generation.
Walker can easily play in Akanji's position (third center back) he did it over and over in the past with both England and City.
This isn't a time for Pep to experiment though
yea, JJ analysis totally missed the point, walker definitely can play in akanji position
good shout mate of course he can
I learned so much, Mr. Bull!
Watching this when Walker has started for the Leicester gameâ ïž
I can say that it has changed. Heâs now playing in a right-back/winger role, where he plays as a winger in attack and a right-back in defence. He is great in wide positions, which they didnât have as much of before. Now he fits really well.
Great details tifo
While I donât understand the technical detail as much, I think Walker plays too high up the pitch for someone who canât shoot or give us a killer pass. He will get you to the danger zone then only to pass back the ball or poorly cross it.
My think though, Pep loves the passing game a bit too much for me- someone who loves the running game as I see it as more exciting. Martinelli, Salah, Vini , KDB, and Foden in motion are great to watch. That game has brought City much success with the likes of Sterling and Sane.
I am glad to see Stones back in the team and in a new role as sometimes heâd get it wrong in CD and shatters his confidence.
Great video JJ
As a player this kind of videos are a great tool for me to learn more about my position, tactics, positioning on the ball and off the ball movement also in this case about walker,
Here after Walker pocketing vinicious in 2nd leg
In the midst of all the modern tactical jargon âtheyâre shooting this wayâ - fantastic
Thatâs an amazing analysis. And if u wanna check out what he said watch the most recent City game vs Leicester. Great video bro
Great analysis.
Pep is at the avant garde...
He is always thinking forward and is ahead of the pack...
But the pack do catch up sometimes...
Great explanation đ
God I love soccer and ppl who can break it down. So glad I subscribed.
The fullback role for most teams now has become a little more complicated, and you have to feel that annoys someone's like Kyle who's a good RB normally but can't seem to fit in the team he once did. Gotta feel sorry for him at the same time.
The Stones conversion is genius
Crazy thing is that pep did say that Jon stones would play in the midfield back in 2018
JJ the best Presenter there by a country mile. COYG!
People think it's because he can't play inverted wingback but Walker has been doing some weird staff outside the pitch and you know Pep, he doesn't put up with such things i mean guy literally soled Zinchenko after seeing his rap music video đ
Pep always says this stuff to create a fire & Walker will play at some point in a big game to do something you wouldn't expect
Walker can not play in Stone position but with movement adaptation he can play in Akanji, I believe
its almost like he is bringing back the sweeper/stopper back 4 formation with the "stopper" dropping in without the ball. What is old is new again but with a modern football/soccer twist
Best right back in the world IMOđđŸ...
i say the best thing to do against a team with a world class LW like real madrid is so start a back 4 of ake dias stones and walker. stones does his thing and drops into the midfield while walker plays as a right centre back. ticks all the boxes really
Indeed! But how many times have we seen Pep invent something some last minute unhelpful trick to avoid the expected (and ideal) option? I love the guy, but his experimenting in knock out CL games has been maddening... I've never processed his decision to start a final WITHOUT ANY holding midfielder vs Chelse where Kante was just walking on water.
Nice one tifo đ
Came back to this vid cause I remember this guy predicting that Walker would play vs Arsenal and he was absolutely bang on, incredible analysis
Guardiola gives a rest to players that got stuff happening off the pitch. Foden's fatherhood, Walkz's problems that night out. Said it on an interview about Foden
He wants his players 100% focused on the game
Literally this
Fatherhood??foden is not the only player that has a child
This was an issue in the opening day vs West Ham, walker looked so rigid inside that game
as a BVB fan im kinda happy akanji is doing so well... especially against buyern
i see what you did there :D 'BUY'ern haha
What about Haaland?
@@lordhiguain7800 yes, him too :3 but his general appreciation has always been high, so the "always rated this guy" effect isnt as pronounced as it is with manu
Pep is a different beast man could play Haaland at cb and somehow he'd magically become the best center half in the whole damn world
Very good explanation, imo
Same thing with tierney at arsenal great left back but doesnât suit the system
The premier League, Cancelo and walker have inadvertently turned our season from a good one to a potentially great one...
As city fan i would say Speed the only advantage Kyle possess but his under pressure, crosses and Handling the ball are really not up the standard and I knew this was coming sooner or later.
Modern FB needs to be good as Mid who can provide you the option of crossing in the box.
In IMP games Kyle is just a liability when it comes to attacking for crosses you need in the final 10min where he try to attempts all goes to waste.
If City finish the job on Bayern I see Kyle Walker playing to try to inhibit Vinicius Jr.
Nah heâs gonna have to mark mudryk trust
â@@JayBee2Fyaso Todd was talking about the 2nd leg?
Pep wonât change his system. He plays four CBs, so he doesnât need Walker.
It's telling how you never mentioned that one of Walker's attributes was him being a good defender. And that is probably the other thing that Pep has in the back of his mind about Walker
Itâs simple. Pep wants everyone in his squad to pay on and off the ball. He wants a true positionless and fluid squad that literally everyone can make opportunities.
he played him today, 11 days after this great video
Pep is the only manager who Iâve seen who is on the same level as Alex ferguson. The way he updates his tactics is exemplary.
Video comes out the day Walker starts
By acknowledging his weaknesses shows Stones has a growth mindset, and Pep, will gravitate to and innately trust that sort of learning intelligent player.
Absolute world class player
It's kind of funny that switching out a fullback for a CB actually helps the team offensively.
He does play him. Just a different system atm
Pep knows what heâs doing you donât get a 70%+ win rate without being a tactical genius
no you get it by having the best club team ever, the only team in Germany that wins the league, and then the best team in England with pretty much unlimited transfer funds.
ââ@@theslugboiii5969no you don't, just splurging money on every superstar footballer available won't win you games much less titles without an orchestrator at the helm... Case in point Chelsea.. spent a boat load of money and has nothing to show for it as the season comes to an end..
@@javonbrowne4938 Todd Boehly is playing Football Manager badly though

I love this guy
Let's go, Gunners. Get him and make Pep groan more and more
This aged well :)
he was RCB just 5 yrs ago in England's WC 2018 run but yeah maybe it's the system not the formation
I seem to remember Guardiola tried Zabaleta in something of a similar role in his first season and it did NOT work.
Great explanation, M. City feels stuck against Madrid.
Will be an espectacular semifinal definition.
Sometimes you just have to admit there is someone younger who can do a job better. Ake and Rico have been amazing this season

I think same thing is happening with Tierney at arsenal
Fast forward to May 2024 and Kyle Walker is helping Arsenal lift their second successive league title
The ex-Spurs man? Not sure about that
the irony of premiering this the same day Kyle was in the starting lineup
Why are PL fixtures always delayed?
he tries to find a solution to fullback scarcity in recent times they are just attaching not defending
