As someone who has seen all of their concerts blu-ray quality about a 100 times I can confidently say that Su definitely doesn't use autotune here. Early on maybe in some songs and there is instances of using it in some parts of some songs but with Syncopation the vocals sound always a little bit different in every concert. Su has been basically a professional singer since like 2005. She knows how to sing.

All the DVD recordings are heavily edited, but the only part that doesn't really need much correction is su's voice. Seen them live 3 times.

    @autohmae Před 2 lety +62

Surprisingly, it's not autotune, Su-metal is just really good at singing straight to the point. It is her specialty. If you check a vocal coach/vocalist reaction to Babymetal they will probably mention it.
More likely what you are hearing is someone manipulating it after the fact for DVD/Blu-ray ? And definitely true, that some think certain songs these days 'require' some kind of effect.
It would be very inappropriate if they started out with sexual appearance as they were to young for that. And it's great they never added it because it's not necessary. Sometimes I do think it would be great to see how much 'abs' they have, because they most have trained so much ! It could be something they are proud of.🙂
The dances are created together with a choreographer. She was actually involved in the Japanese Olympics, she is 'world famous in Japan' you could say.

Good reaction. This was a Japan exclusive track on the second album - it has been played live outside of Japan just one time - at Brixton, London in 2019.
As has been said, Su-metal does not use auto-tune in live performances ... I think you are referring to the one note (at 5.30 in your video) that is electronically generated. The camera does not show, but at that point in live shows Su actually holds the microphone down and doesn't even pretend to sing it.
The rest of it is all her natural singing voice, she really is that good (OK there may be some post production cleaning up a note here and there for the DVDs, but it is minimal when you compare the DVD videos to fancams from the same shows they are virtually identical).
On the choreo, their choreographer is Mikiko Mizuno (aka Mikiko), one of Japan's very best. She has worked with them from the start. The girls have also had an increasing amount of input as they have grown older as well.
The choreography is bespoke for each song and it serves two purposes:
    - It is designed to help with interpreting the song and its meaning, so it may be directly related to the lyric, it may just express the feeling of the song.
    - It is made with the crowd response in mind, where the crowd might want to jump the choreo leads them and says "yes, jump now" or punch the air, or shout here etc. Yuimetal and Moametal are crucial in what BABYMETAL do in this respect.
I am so glad you have also noticed there is absolutely no sexualisation of the girls - that would have been so wrong given how young they were when they started, but they have continued that policy throughout their career.
Their costumes have always been age appropriate and very conservative, very modest - they dress them in a feminine way, but there is never any deliberately exposed flesh.
Unlike so many western (and other) artists who use their sexuality to sell their records wearing leotards and less, BABYMETAL has always been about the music and their talents as singers and dancers.
Likewise the choreography avoids any sexualised movements - no grabbing their crotches, no slut drops, no provocative open leg poses etc. As I already said above, their choreography is there to help interpret the songs and to get the crowd involved and joining in.

The main vocalist, she doesn't use autotune, but combines it with pre-recorded SE.
An operator accompanies the live venue and mixes the sounds of piano and electronics, and the SE of the voice. Babymetal does not use autotune during live performances. An operator is accompanied by a perfect compound operation that makes her voice sound like using Auto-Tune.

Well, Suzuka proved more than once that she singing live. It is her voice actually. Suzuka started singing when she was 6 YO, She is Real. So You can trust Her. You not used that kind of singing because we all listen to western deep voices. Japanese female singers (male too) have that high pitch note in theirs singing. There are lot of proof that not only Suzuka but Moa and Yui sang live during jumping and dancing which is incredible. Su metal have acapella part in BxMxC live You can check. She is Rap in that song and it is just WOW! Or "No rain No Rainbow" on Budokan 2021 where Su-Metal is singing to piano she plays. That lady is a Pro. Really. You can check also our beloved two metal cheerleaders during Budokan 2014 live to "Onedari daisakusen". You can hear clearly they out of breath at the half of the song and they still dancing, jumping and singing. I'm glad You enjoy that kind of metal music face. Metal music need Joy and happiness. I've seen them live and there is definitely no autotune. There are plenty of fan cam videos out there that prove it's live as well. These videos are edited after the fact to smooth things out. They do use backing tracks of her own voice sometimes to add a particular accent to a note but she sings live.

As far as the tears are concerned, Babymetal has that effect on some. I've seen hard core metalheads tear up at Babymetal shows. I can't explain it. I've never understood it. I can only testify they tend to have that affect on some. I'd love to understand the psychology behind why some people get Babymetal immediately and some people never do. I find that the common factor amongst those who get it is empathy. Those who get it tend to posses high levels of empathy for others and can "feel" for the girls, somewhat akin to a parent taking pride with the accomplishments of their child, as well as tune into the energy of the audience, which is always uber positive at a Babymetal concert. It's certainly a weird dynamic but it's there. I'm not sure where Vince is hearing auto-tune. Su needs no autotune. There are a few songs where autotune is applied for artistic reasons, but using autotune to cover limited vocal ability, nope, that's not happening. Su's superpower is cleanly hitting notes. Babymetal was built around her because of it (and because unique characteristics of her voice allow it to rise above the heavy music).

    • @dishonestcomposerreacts
      @dishonestcomposerreacts  Před 2 lety +1

Lol are you saying Vince has no empathy??? How dare you ... Lol just kidding. You may be on to something there , i would agree that it could have something to do with empathy combined with some emotional personal attachment that the whole thing triggers as well.
I only shed tears on sad things, deep things, like for example there was a tv show where there was two old people who were a couple for 60 years or so, then one of them had an life ending illness, they showed his last months until his death, with him and his wife, until at the end , he was laying there in the bed with his wife of 60 years holding his hand, as he took his last breath. That teared me up. Things like that brings me to tears. So you could say i can tear up but it takes a lot lol.
I dont know, i just hear proccessed or electronic effects to the voice. They can actually add that to live singing, not just studio. Its a plugin that they add to the voice before it goes to the speakers. I didnt know that before, that it they could add auto tune to live singing but apperantly they can. Now maybe she can sing very well, and they just want to use it for effect or for the live vocals to be clear on top of all the metal? I dont know. Now im not saying these things to clamp down on her, im just saying what i think i hear. Cheers

I also like that they don’t sexualise the girls, I think too many women in music are pressured to either be sexy or they act and dress too much like their male counterparts, I think it is empowering to young girls to show you can be girls and have success for who you are, yes they do play heavily on the cute kawaii look but that is very cultural in Japan and is pretty much the norm for most Japanese women. Their choreography is done by a woman named Mikiko Mizuno. She is an acclaimed dancer and choreographer, and was involved with the closing ceremony for the 2016 Olympics and was meant to be in charge of the 2020 Olympics but the delays and internal politics saw her not end up being involved.

This song is on the Japanese version of their second album. It was a song that shocked me. I'm a relatively new fan since 2019, and due to the Corona disaster, I haven't been able to go to their live shows yet, but if you've been to one of their shows, you would never say it is auto-tune. In fact, it's the totally opposite. Su-'s singing ability is so outstanding that it cannot be compared to the vocals of existing Japanese idols or rock bands. However, her voice on the studio albums is clearly processed. It is also possible that the sound on the live DVD/BDs are also somewhat processed. One more thing, their live performances are of course by the real band now, but they also use a lot of backing tracks, some of which have vocals. You have to be very discerning about that.
I also love the feeling of being teased around in the intro, which is exciting. It's also very thrilling during the song, and I'm really amazed at the way Su- timed the song and how she does the breaths. And when it gets to the A part, it's like an old Japanese pop rock song vibes, and it's definitely nostalgic as you said. The lyrics is like shouting out a faint first love to the night sky on the Metal vibes, which fits their pure and straightforward images. They chorus, 'I love you, I hate you' at 3:35. It's as if they're doing a flower reading. Yes, the absence of any sexuality is another reason why I love them. Thank you from Japan.

Not only she is not using autotune, but she is amazing at keeping a steady voice in almost all the live performances, that's why they are so amazing. I remember when I bought a Cannibal Corpse album, for me it was great and heavy instrumental music, but completely awful voice. Some people may like that kind of voice, some may not. It's the same with BABYMETAL, but also BABYMETAL takes their performances to the next level, with amazing production and constant hardwork which few bands have show in the last 10 years. For me BABYMETAL is the perfect kind of metal music, a powerfull, happy and energetic metal music, instead of the regular angry and depressing metal music that we have known for many years, so I thank god every day for giving us BABYMETAL xD. Thanks for the reaction!!

Oh you dont appreciate honest opinions? Fine. But dont expect me to fake it just so you will enjoy it. If i hear that something sounds autotuned, i will say it , and to me it sounded at least processed. And by the way, artists can use autotune on live vocals in realtime, if you didnt know. Before the vocal feed hits the speakers. They go through the autotune plugin. Im not saying for a fact that that is the case here, but it def doesnt sound natural to my ears. What you want me to do? LIE? Then that says way more about you than it does me. You afraid of the truth? Afraid that that might be the truth? Im guessing you are, hence they butt hurtness. Say it was autotuned, would that change what you feel about them or their music? Why couldnt you just still like them the way you like them now?
Anyways, no hard feelings. You dont need to watch our videos. We only want people watching our videos if they can handle it. Good or bad.

@@dishonestcomposerreacts Not afraid at all. I've seen many raw footage from fancams (unfortunately I was not able to see them live last year due the pandemic). So I know what I'm talking about. So your opinion will never change what I feel about their music. I'd try to explain it better.
The source of the video is a DVD/BD so it's edited and has an obvious post production. You need to listen to the whole lyrics rather than a particular sound, note or passage which is probably generated or added during postpro... They also use backing tracks live for some vocal harmonies and other effects. If you take a closer look when the effects came out, Su doesn't even bother to pretend to sing.
It's been a lot of criticism about this (actually both auto tune and lip-syncing) specially at the beginning so it's a very sensitive topic.
I probably over reacted, but it's mostly because of your attitude apparently based on forcing yourself to not like them. "It's poppier" and things like that, you know. I used to be a thrash metal and death metal fan, so believe me, don't expect that. They originated as a blend of genres and it's what give them their identity. They have heavier, they have beautiful power ballads, EDM... even a dream trance song.
Suzuka is well known and recognized to be a killer on stage. And it's rare. (Okay, I've heard her missing some note, but don't tell anyone hehe...) Even my other favorite bands aren't actually this good live (specially on vocals).

Thanks for reacting to Syncopation. Quite a good and honest reaction. Understandably, new listeners or viewers of their live performances think that they are using auto-tune to Sumetal's (lead singer) voice. However, in live performances, it's hard to add an auto-tune given that it's live. What is possible and sometimes used are short backtracks, besides that backtrack, like what you can at around 5:30. We can say that 90-95% of the sound you hear in their live performances are on-the-spot, real instrument, and vocal sounds.
Since the doubt to Su's live vocals is still there (and that's understandable) I recommend that you watch and listen to KARATE live at Download festival 2016 or to one of Sumetal's solo songs like "No Rain, No Rainbow" Legend S version.
Nevertheless, again, that's a good reaction. Cheers! 🦊🤘

There's a couple of places where they employ vocal effects, but they don't apply effects to her live vocals in those cases. Instead they put those lines in the backing track and Su-metal takes her face away from the mic.
The rest is her natural voice, which is just unusually stable and clear. This actually worked against her as a teenager because it left her sounding a bit thin sometimes.
There's definitely concert DVD post-production in this and most other videos you'll see people react to, but if you hear the vocals from a fan cam or festival, they are still very consistent, but not perfect enough to be auto-tuned. Karate @ Download 2016 is a good choice for this.

This song might have the best blend of electric guitar, and Su's voice in their entire collection.
    It's certainly right up there.
For years this one had only been performed in Japan.
Finally, at the O2 Academy Brixton concert (July 2nd, 2019) it was on the setlist.
That's still the only time it's been performed outside of Japan.
'Syncopation' is on the Japanese (domestic) only release of the 'Metal Resistance' album.
'From Dusk Till Dawn' is on the international release.
They did later add it to some of the international streaming services like Spotify.
As a side note, your intro doesn't say what you probably think it does:
    "DO NOT REQUEST OR
    WATCH IF YOU DO NOT
    APPRECIATE OR CAN
    HANDLE HONESTY"
I can handle honesty, but I'm still watching your reactions. : )
I'm guessing you meant "CAN'T HANDLE HONESTY".

They don’t use auto tune live but in post production for the dvds which these videos are taken from they do a lot of cleaning up of the audio, it is possible they use auto tune in that process. I have heard fan cam audio and she does occasionally hit a wrong note but generally she is pretty good and if you were at the concert you probably would not notice especially as the power of the band would be a lot more prominent than in these videos

I think you are referring to the relatively rare occasional use of pitch correction in post-production rather than autotune. It is interesting that not every slightly off note is corrected. The mix is also played with to volume adjust different instruments or vocal phrases. All pretty standard stuff these days, of course.

Their choreographies stand out to me as well. I am coming from Metal, so I have never had much to do with choreographed dancing. And I can‘t say I liked when I saw Pop acts use it, and to be honest, I still don’t. But with BABYMETAL it‘s different. I enjoy it a lot, and I think it adds a whole lot to the entertainment value and the live energy.
The reasons are probably the exact two points you mentioned: Most of the choreography has a meaning, it supports the song and the lyrics. Watching the typical Pop choreography, it always seems to me like there‘s a universal grab-bag of moves that everybody randomly grabs a few from and strings them together. The individual moves have no meaning, and the final conglomerate doesn‘t either. It adds nothing to the song. By contrast, some of BABYMETAL‘s choreographies almost enable you to understand the song without understanding the lyrics.
The second point is the lack of sexualization. All those supposedly sexy moves are getting so boring. They give me nothing, while a beautiful, cute girl smiling and obviously having fun brightens my day. I don‘t think I have ever watched a BABYMETAL video without a big smile on my face.

Find it interesting to see so many metal heads liking BM cause it would seem like they would reject it cause it isn't as "angry" as metal heads would want it. But it's cool to learn about that.
Would you as a metal head liked it if the metal band in the background wasn't there?
Yeah I agree with you regarding those typical dance moves for sure! So over done.

@@dishonestcomposerreacts I don't know if you know that, but they actually started out playing to a backing track. Only the vcals were live, while the instrumentalists on stage only pretended to play (if you ever see a video with skeletons playing the instruments, that's them). The music is still great, of course, so I probably would have become a fan either way, but I do think that the band was crucial to their success. Especially metalheads would have been hard to convince otherwise.
