My dad was a laborer. He paved the streets in NYC. I was very proud of him. My sister and I went to parochial school, all the way through high school. I was disappointed my dad, whom I knew loved me very much, would never go with me to the father/daughter dances. I found out when I was older....he didn’t own a suit, and couldn’t afford to buy one. He sacrificed much for us. He’s been gone 30 years.....I miss him everyday.

I knew a street sweeper once. He was a really special guy. He told me it was a great job. This guy was mega friendly, he kept an eye on everything & everyone. He was the heart of the streets he swept. He looked out for lost children & elderly people who needed help to carry things. He gave real attention to the areas he swept & the shopkeepers noticed & would come out with hot coffee & snacks for him. He knew everyone & would spot strangers & would talk to homeless people & tell them where they could get help. That was in Portsmouth at the end of the 1970s. I hope he is doing well.

I remember being in Liverpool UK one day and sat down in the main St. A cleaner came along and I moved my feet to one side so he could sweep up. I've never done this before but felt I should thank him for the work he was doing, he looked surprised and said "well it's a job". No it's not just a job it's something important we can't all be teachers, Dr's, lawyers important as they are. But without the people willing to do this sort of work what would our towns etc look like in no time. I realised that day how we need to value the men and women who do mundane jobs and contribute a lot.

All crewmembers ate in the same mess, no special one for officers. I had a lot more respect for Norwegians after this, America is not a classless society, we are mobile but our situation pins us to a specific class until we more up or down.

Although I never had the happy ending, I went down that same road. I dug ditches early in my career for the Power Company. My mon used to tell me that if I didn't study hard I'd be a ditch digger. I was ashamed I had to dig ditches. But my kids needed to eat, and I sent them to private schools so they could get the best education. My 1st wife worked with me for a lot of years to provide for my kids, but I guess she wanted stuff too, and one day divorced me to marry a rich guy. I had worked my way up in the Company to where we were doing better financially, and I attended Night College to get my Engineering Degree. Because of the divorce I wasn't able to finish my degree. 9 years of night school down the drain. But my kids were almost out of their schools and did well those last few years in Public Schools. Mainly because of the education they got in the Private School. They both went to their Colleges and CLEPT out of a lot of classes because they already learned the subject in Private school. They are doing well now.
I struggled with myself for 10 years as a single parent for most of those raising my son. And finally after child support was done I was able to get my life back together. I remarried, 26 years now, and my new wife, a College Graduate from a Prestigious College are doing well in our retired life. I learned how to invest when I was Poor and how to manage money to get ahead. I drove old cars and lived in modest houses. Still do! But I am much happier now that I ever would have been had my 1st wife not divorced me for her $Boyfriend. That (her) marriage lasted only 3 years. She is now on $Husband #3. I like him though. He's a good Guy and is good to my kids and grandkids.
So all that to say this. Just because your life is not perfect and you have to struggle, learn to better yourself by believing in yourself. And never stop trying to grow and become a better person. Love Life with all it's bumps and bruises. Those tests in life, and how you react to them, determine wh you really are. God Bless all of you who are struggeling with your selfworth. Hang in there! It does get better if you never give up on yourself.

I won't say anything about daughters but I would like to say something to that father..if you are a swiper don't feel ashamed bcz work is work no matter what.... and doing that job at least you can feed your daughters being a swiper don't get disheartened.....you should feel proud yourself by doing that job bcz you are not stealing someone's money...you should feel shy or ashamed if you steal someone money or you lie to anyone but not feel ashamed to do jobs😊😊

    Because real family cares.
It isn't necessarily being right there beside you as you go through it but making certain that you are okay when it is over.
Only my mother understood that. I am like my mother as much as I can be.
p.s. I can never be as good as she was because it was in her heart naturally and I had to learn it.
Those are real fathers and in return she is a real daughter.
