  • Footage from the gathering of T-34 Mentors in the days leading up to the 2016 EAA AirVenture airshow in Oshkosh. Each year, pilots of the T-34 Mentor association meet up at Manitowoc County Airport (KMTW) in Manitowoc, WI for some formation practice before flying into Oshkosh in one massive formation. Local EAA Chapter 383 hosts the pilots for the weekend.
While at the gathering, we were able to go up in a backseat during a formation practice flight. You can see video of that here: • T-34 Mentor Air to Air...
Thank you to Smitty and all of the other pilots for helping us get this footage!

I think the T34 is my favorite of all time airplanes, right after the PT-17.

I learned to fly at the Albrook Air Force Base Aero Club in the Panam Canal Zone in 1969. Along with Cessna 150’s, a Cessna 175, a couple ofPiper Cherokee 140’s, we also had an Air Force T-34 that could be rented by the hour by members of the Aero Club. I never got checked out to pilot the T-34, but I did go up and flew in it a few times with a member of our Club who was the Club’s Mechanic and a certified Pilot.
He took me up a few times and we did some aerobatic maneuvers in it. It was neat to fly with the cockpit canopy open and the air blowing in! I also enjoyed the barrel rolls we did. I never got to land or take off the bird, but Idid get a little stick time while in the air.
I wonder what ever happened to that T-34. The Air Force shut down the Aero Club in 1971 after a couple accidents.
My flying career ended in 1972 when I lost sight in my left eye.
