- Hi i'm Nolan and i have a 2010 Honda Civic. In this video i will show you how to sand, use body filler, and paint your car with good results! The video is laid out in a step by step format so you can reference it if you decide to paint a car yourself! Im growing my instagram @diy_civic and i would appreciate it if you guys gave me a follow! Also if you could follow @_liamcairns_ as he was my photographer through all of this! I have never had any experience in body work before and this was my first try! Just realize that it is a lot of work but it is so worth it when the car is finished. I hope everyone is safe and healthy, thanks for watching this video and have a great day! Subscribe!

Did you put clear coat too?
Can you provide the links where you purchased?
you get a lot of fisheye or no?
To learn how to properly mix filler, apply & sand, watch Sylvesterscustoms
@NolanConley can u plz put a link of everything u brought? I been wanting to do the same to my Honda
Coming from a Painter and someone who has done body work for 20 Years
First sand the old paint with 220 Grit not 80
As far as body work never put body filler over rust. Make sure to always grind the rust completely out!
Always Prime the complete area that old clear and old paint was removed as you can see on the first coat of paint you can see all those areas bleeding through this would have prevented this.
Also after Priming the complete Hood roof etc... Sand with a Block to make it level and slick always sand at an angle do not sand strait with your block or it can leave lines in the primer.
Let primer cure for at least a day or two before sanding. So it can absorb into the scratches.
Sand the car with 400 Grit before painting.
After the car is mask up and ready to paint Use a Sealer on the primer before painting this will also eliminate any scratches or imperfections left wait 30 minutes after spraying the sealer and then Paint the Car do about 3 coats of paint and then wait 15-20 minutes and Clear coat 3 coats!
If you do this you will have a nice paint Job!
A million thanks for the advice. After taking off the old paint with 240, do you then jump to 320 and then 400?
Nolan after seeing your comment: "Ohhhh.. SHIT!" :))))
@@avilesnba You can primer directly over the 220 but if you want you can take an extra step such as 400 to eliminate even more scratches which will certainly help avoid them ever coming back through and showing.
Do wet sand it at 220?
Paint is one thing I don't feel comfortable doing myself. I've tried to paint stuff like engine or suspension parts following instructions and it never works. So I just get stuff powder coated now.
Do you have any good way to to find a good paint shop near me? Obviously there is Maaco and collision centers, but no one really advertises paint jobs (besides Maaco which I'd avoid).
"Paint a car at home" ... has a body shop in his garage.
Lmao 🤣
On god I went straight to the comments like bro this ain’t at “home”for 90 percent of people
😂😂😂
He had nothing special. It was all at home stuff you can buy. He literally just had a garage, time and money 🤣
🤦🏾♂️😂😂
You're a good dude. It takes courage to be humble and dedication to take the time necessary to make this. I appreciate you brother, and I appreciate a majority of comments on this video as well.
Nolan, what an enjoyable video. Thanks for sharing this and, take it from someone who painted his first vehicle in 1973, you did a terrific job. You video, as well, is top notch. The world belongs to people like you who are willing to try something new, learn from it and share their experience. Thanks so much and continued success to you. Drive that CIVIC proudly, she looks fantastic.
thank you so much for the kind words! striving to do my best in everything I do!
You could also wets
and all the orange peel out.
Not sure how to use a paint gun never used one.I ALWAYS USE A RATTLE CAN.Thats really my only issue.Did you already have experience with paint gun and did you have any problems with it.should I give it a try or should I just stick to can.i don't want buy one if it's a pain to use.thanks again.i am not looking for perfect rattle can is fine by me I do Good work and made money several times been doing body work off and on since I was 13 yrs old.
@@williammcinerny9198 Using a gun will come out with a superior paint job every time. The hassle is really all of the equipment you need to buy with it. At least 5hp air compressor and filters alone are expensive. If you're going to go through the trouble, buy good paint. This guy should have used base coat/clear coat. Depends what you are going for though, if you're just doing rockers, rattle can because it probably won't last regardless of the paint. Collision repair on a decent car, 2k system is the best.
Edit: They actually do make rattle can 2 part clear coat. I think it's eastwood that makes it. I've heard good things about it and it would probably make you work hold up quite a bit better.
Remember that prep work always will take you longer than the painting itself. Nice work.
Prep work is all the work painting is just art but not as time consuming as soul draining prep lol
I know how to repair rust and dings. but i have never thought about painting my entire car body at home. You are amazing.
Everyone hating in the comments, but keep in mind this is a at home DIY! If you are gonna hate, just bring your car to a paint shop. I honestly thought you did an amazing job, the paint job looks clean on that civic!
I think even with single stage paint you're supposed to prime the car before hand with filler primer. Before that though, you should have brushed off the rusted areas and used rust remover. It'll bubble your paint extremely quickly otherwise. Awesome project for you to learn from though. Great job!
Wet sand and buff for a factory finish. Next do the blue civic next to yours.
Gonna do this to a couple panels on my Tsx
wait..
dad?
lol good advice dad
You did a great job. It looks fantastic. I love how well you explained everything in detail and showed all the steps.
This was an awesome transformation ! Thank you for putting the time into making this video I’m looking at painting my car too and you made me way more comfortable with the process
You are very courageous for a first timer doing such an amazing job. I am going to be doing my front and rear fender on the passenger side and a bit nervous. You are a great encouragement. Thanks.
**Muscle emoji , handy work is savages 👌🏽
Great job. Car looks good. Best part is you weren't afraid too jump off into something that was a lot of work and also you had never done before. God Bless.
It came out really decently bro. I learned quite a lot and I respect your bravery and effort. Nice job Fam.
It turned out nice man considering you missed primer, fine sanding, clear coat and buffing but still nice and you saved a tonne of cash good job.
you dont need to primer on a car that is already painted you only primer bare metal also he used single stage paint that as clear coat built in no extra clear coat needed
@@AdamSNook. I would have done a sealer coat after the primer repairs though and over the entire car and then 3 base coats and 3 clear lacquer.
@@riboid waste of material
@@keyworksales6241 yeah come tell us that in a year when your car looks like a wet painting. I understand where you’re coming from but I’d rather the paint last 10 years than 1-3
@@Lando-oz7hd they’re right 🤷 i’m in collision repair for repainting/refinishing and 99% of auto body paint already contain a primer & top coat so sanding it down and taping off the areas you don’t want painted is the only prep work needed. only time you could use primer is if you are putting new parts on your car (like new panels) because repainting your entire car will help the new part blend in. but it’s still only for the aesthetic
Interesting vid. Like you, Nolan, I have a car that looks like hell, a battered '08 Honda Fit. When my oldest backed into a pipe, knocking a hole in the rear bumper, that was it. I patched that ('glass on the inside, bondo on the outside), then turned my attention to an array of dents and dings. Now, those are all done. I'm going to get an estimate from a body shop up the road to repaint the car the same color (metallic blue), but I'm pretty sure the boy and I will paint it ourselves.
(My brother and I repainted a couple of cars, but that was years ago. I needed a refresher.)
I think you did a fine job for a first-timer.
Thanks for doing the research and simplistic video, Nolan! I figured it wasn't rocket surgery and don't have $1000+ to polish a turd with 180,000 miles, rust, cracking clear coat, and shoddy interior. Much appreciated! 👍
Sensational video. Right to the point and great directions.
Another tip, before you paint and after you wash it. Wet a lint free rag with mineral spirits or acetone to wipe down the whole car. Removes any grease and will prevent imperfections in your paint. Then tack when dry. Also skim coat helps your Bondo imperfections. We apply a layer over Bondo to really get it perfect. Spray down black paint to see any low or high spots. If you get orange peel in some spots you can try to wet sand it out with super fine grit then buff it (but don't go too crazy or you'll have to spray that area again). You get that wavy orange peel because the surface wasn't prepped clean
Wow! Great job! I'm here looking for a tutorial to repaint my car for the first time, and this has given me the confidence to give it a go 😁 thank you
how did it go?.... I'm getting a little confident myself
Very cool video! One tip for you: make sure to keep the volume under control. In this video I find myself having to raise the volume to listen to you and lower it for the music.
ill work on it for the next one!
Yea, me to...
I think it was just the music he chose lol
Setting audio max limits and audio gain will be your best friend
Compression- just bump the gain and put a limiter keep it simple
I am 56 in December. I sure wish we had youtube back in the 80's but I am not sure a 1980 Honda Accord would have looked better with a paint job. You done good. I got on here because I have a 2007 Z71 Suburban I am fixing up and you just inspired me. Thanks for sharing. I will probably end up paying to have it painted but who knows.
great work, shine your headlights too and your perfect!!!!
Good job man I hope you learned from this adventure! Keep up the work ethic and you'll go far.
You did a VERY GOOD JOB YOUNG MAN..THANKS 4 THE INSPIRATION!😇💕👌🏾
Takes a lot of balls to attempt such a project. Nice job.
Thanks for sharing! Results look clean! I'm gonna to try these steps out for mine
Great job bro! Gonna be painting my car soon, this helped a lot!
awesome! my mom just gave me her old civic. can't wait to paint it black just like you've done
You got this. Get after it 👊
All these old timers in the comments should start their "tips" with a word of congratulations to this young man for putting himself out in front of the world while having fun with a project. Not many of us would have had the same gumption at his age.
Good show young man! Keep doing tf out of you! Damn those keyboard "experts".
Bruh🙌this video was so simple🔥yet didnt miss the mark🙌it was so pure of you mahn💯 great job loved it😄😄
Looks amazing I’m going to paint my g35 roof and my trunk door soon
Thanks for this awesome video. I'm motivated to repaint my SSV8 from poison ivy colour to hot pink or nenon pink with some stripes. Why pay almost $5000 when I can do it myself in my garage. Great video.
Pretty good! I'm impressed. Love how your video isn't crazy long, and you keepmit interesting
Best instructional video for painting a car on CZcams.
That's freaking awesome, my cars paint has chipped and would love to do this for mine. Amazing job!
Respect .Its a lot of work and time
Me and my dad did my whole car in a day he made it take longer than it should have
@@garneylester8530 did you guys use more expensive equipment?
No we didn’t just used and cheap ass sanded that’s not even meant for a car and wet sanded, used 50in materials
Yup
Well everyone was jobless last year so yea
A clean paint job really adds life to any car 🔥
Awesome paint job Nolan! 👏👏👏👏 I just have a small patch of paint that needs repair and is costing $800 at the shop. So glad to find this. Great camera work and video editing.... Impressed! Congrats on many views and Comments 🙌💪💕😄
I THINK I GOT GOOSEBUMPS IN MY EARS WHEN YOU STARTED SANDING THE HOOD...
10:25 I feel like im watching breaking bad or something🤣😂
u did a great job.im on the process of getting my car painted n ur video helped me alot. thanks
That was awesome Nolan. Keep up the solid work!
That's pretty darn good for your 1st time, I'm assuming not everybody can get the results you got. I've never painted with a hvlp spraygun either. Planning on painting my 4th gen civic, I have all the tools and materials, just doing a little more reseach to boost my confidence😅. Great video, awesome job🤙🏽
Nice job! I was wondering if you have used a polishing compound yet. I have tried Meguiars Ultimate Compound with good results on my hood. I got their polish too but so far have only used Ultimate compound. It costs around $14. I used an electric drill with a foam ball - I don't have a professional polisher yet.
I haven’t yet! Maybe something I do in the future, but a drill and a good foam ball would work awesome
Bad ass man im in a process to paint mine with no experience,i will try, love your dedication👍🏻
That car looks like an absolute dream to mask up, the lines make is so simple to cover up properly.
Wow, now this is epic
Anyone wondering how the paint has held up over the last 10 months check out my insta @diy_civic
I posted an update so you guys can see - FYI there's no bumper because I went off the road going up a mountain, just scroll down on my insta and you'll see the accident lol. Thanks for watching!
Good work dude! Did you have any runs on the paint??
@@urdad8390 no runs

Wet sand, compound, polish, wax. Then you’ll really see it shine.
@nolan - YOU KILLED IT! Nice... sweet!
Mad respect from Los Angeles bro. Thanks for the video and the great insights from your experience
Great video! All the details I needed! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Nolan, for not having experience, you did a great job. Props bro. I just bought my first car a few days ago. It has sun damage and so I'm debating on whether I should do it myself or just shell out the cash to have it professionally done, but you make it seem very doable - thanks. Oh by the way, how long did it take this whole process?
Looks like it took him about a week. 1 day each for each sanding stage. Then a day for painting. Another day in between of all that.
@@VicSellsPeace thks bro. I'll def look into then. Bc I was quoted like 5k 2 redo my shit. And I was like FUHHC..that's a whole ass other car right there aha
@@Andrew_Kono Jesus! 5k?!?!?! Yep, let's do it ourselves. I'm doing it next month with my brother. I have an older car, 1997 Accord, like yours, it has sun damage and the clear is destroyed. It has some light cosmetic damage but I can sand it down and add some fillers.
Good luck, hope it goes well. Keep me updated!
Great video, insanely helpful, and didn’t make me use 30+ minutes of my day 🙌🏽 I do have one question though, what were the measurements you used for the paint, paint reducer and paint catalyst? And I saw you said that works for “basic colors”, what kinda colors are ‘basic’? Like would orange work with this method?
I don't remember the mix but for whatever paint you do decide to buy they will have all of that info on the can / bottle. as far as basic colours go i was told that white, black, red and yellow were pretty much the only colours you'd want to use single stage on if you wanted the best results possible. But to answer your question I definitely think you could paint with orange with good results. good luck!!
You did such a good job! This is just how I was thinking it could be.😀 I am really encouraged to do my own car! Wish me luck🤩
Great video, the end result was amazing, well done!!.
Great project!Nice for no experience!Would you do it again?
Nothing wrong with your paint choice and style of paint. Used well in the industrial and heavy equipment world. If you really wanted to you could coat the car, let it cure fully and then fine grit sand or wet sand to get that micro Scratching and then coat it in a clear coat, like a hard paint with a clear coat for that vase coat protection, may have a slight edge refraction in the light but I think that would add character and you wouldn't even really notice it.
Cross hatch is a good method for hand planing a flat surface but since your dealing with edges and contours the cross hatch really doesn't work. If you cut to far your paint will level out, be careful on the edges, looks like you burnt through or maybe not, hard to tell. Primer the bare paint. Other then that man...this looks mint
great results for first time. awesome job.
idk if this is a flex of how good the Civic came out first or a tutorial first but idgaf. the car came out amazing and this is a great video. good shit bro
Looks good man, I am sure you are still learning like I am. F the haters, bunch of keyboard warriors. But people who have years of knowledge, take it and keep learning buddy.
Good video very informative. About how many hours total did it take you?
took around 60 hours all in - sanding definitely took the longest amount of time but you could cut the time in half with an orbital sander... definitely take your time on the sanding portion of things, make sure to address rust thoroughly because once the paint is down you won't be able to fix it without re spraying again
Nice tutorial will reference this again on my project. Also thanks for introducing me to the Feint track. Really good.
Good job man. Thanks for the video 🙏
Respect from Morocco 🤝
Good job👍
thanks man!
Definitely needs clear coated to make it pop!
Yeah it looks like dogshit
no clear on single stage paint - although it does need to be sanded & polished. looking into making another video addressing that.

I watched too many videos. Yours was honest and simple no B.S straight forward.
I will paint my car
Every one said black color is worst but you did it so i will . Thanks
couple tips you shouldnt get bodyfiller wet, it can absorb water also should use a primer ontop of all metal and filler before painting.
also did you put filler over rust???
No primer nor sealer?? U cant tell me u didnt have sand scratches? For a quickie paint job thats clear was only delamming I would've ditched 80 grit, too harsh. 400 or even 600 would be sufficient. Use at least a sealer for uniformity or maybe a Bulldog type adhesion promoter. Tip.. 85% overlap tighter passes less material needed. Did it dull back yet?
U r absolutely correct!
Genuinely impressive and making me want to do it
This is awesome brother and thank you for teaching me how to paint
For the body filling why didnt you remove the rust before applying? It will still spread and eventually ruin your paint I thought? Also since the rust would have been bare metal, shouldn't primer have been applied first? I've only done very few amateur bodywork and not good at painting knowledge really so I'm curious.
ill be honest, I should have addressed the rust more before I applied body filler. although with the paint its a single stage polyurethane paint that's mixed with a paint catalyst and reducer, there's no primer or clear, everything is mixed in and put down in one step. but the paint has held up really nicely over the 9 months since ive uploaded. Theres still no rust and the paint is still shiny so I think if you were to paint your car the single stage is a great option especially for the price
@@NolanConley Min 3:38 - 3:48 isn't great, putting filler over obvious red rust, this isn't ideal. Do something, like a 'kurust', or rub down, or epoxy, or weld. Not filler ontop of rust....that's lazy, which is at odds considering the effort you put into the rest of the car.
@@joehart3826 Super rude. lol
Thanks. I got a small dent in my car that chipped off some paint and I was quoted $3500 to repair it. I pulled most of the dent out and watching this, I'm confident that I can repaint that small area myself. I'll just add a primer like they said in the comments.
im researching to paint an old crusty 91 Toyoda truck - not planning to go so pro as you did but still it’s good inspiration for how much you can do (and save ) if your willing to learn and put in the time
Great job! That Honda looks so much better 🤩
Bro I’m at the same point with my car. It’s 2300 like what am I gonna do get it painted for 3000? It’s so bad to look at though I’m gonna try this
if you buy some baller wheels then you can joke about the wheels being worth more than your car haha
Just a couple of tips:
To prevent scratching trim when sanding; mask everything up before you start
Use a space heater to get the room nice and warm.
Lay on some primer/sealer first to ensure your base coat stays on.
Spray a single very light layer of base coat on, let it flash off and lightly sand. This will help you see any low or high spots that need correcting before you lay a proper base coat.
When spraying, don't release the trigger, instead flick your wrist left or right at the end of your pass to help with blending and prevent the gun from spitting.
Give it a few good layers of clear then sand and buff to make it look showroom quality!
Love this video for so many reasons
Dude. Great job looks amazing.
Fucking awesome diy, helped me a lot!
happy to help!
You should have epoxy primed the bare metall before painting so it doesent rust
Does that rly mattertho?
@@user-mt5zl4rp5h yeah it does if it starts to rust underneath it’ll start to bubble
My man, amazing work, wow. Keep it up.
Wow that was awesome. I need to try this on my car
You should have removed the front and rear light fixtures to avoid potentially scratching them as you sand.
The process is good. but I think you missed two things: I think that's the reasons why your car (sorry) not look so shiny after painting. After painting you need to apply furnishing (varnish compund a.k.a clear coat) on the body surface to 'unveil' the genuine paint color. Then you also need to polish those surface wish polishing brush+ polishing compound to make glossy effect.
Lastly (not mandatory) you need to apply ceramic coat (fluid compound) to guard the painting against all weather damage (sun overheating), acid rain, accidentally scratch, chemical fluid disturbance etc..
Yes, clear coat as final really brings forth color and more shine. In some cases clear coat alone can bring out colors without painting which speaks to why is so crucial for this kind of work.
If he was using a base/clear method and products, yes. But he was using a single-stage paint, which requires no clear. He did have quite a bit of orange peel surface effect though.
Very nice video! Love the drum and bass as well!!
Oh I’m about to put my dad’s shop to good use! I have an 07 Tacoma that needs a complete makeover. This will be my spring project!
You forgot to factor in the cost of an air compressor that can handle the job of painting ;)
Fr
You only need a compressor that puts out 30psi and they come as cheap as 60 bucks
Get it from Costco, then return it.

did you just put body filler over RUST? That's not gonna work
its held up for the last 10 months with no issues. I probably should have addressed it better but it was my first time and more of a learning experience rather than a professional paint job
Literally
Its a civic who cares
yeah, rust is like mold. if you don't get rid of it, it'll continue to grow. you took the time to learn what chemicals to use and the ratio but you didn't take the time to learn the very basic of cleaning the rust. eventually there's going to be bubbles unfortunately
im gonna go for it. You earned my subscription!
