Only the size matters here. Take the penny and the dime for example… they follow the same route but as it gets closer to the end the curve of the plastic forces both coins towards the left (from the coin’s perspective). If you are small like a dime you stay in the slot but if you are larger like a penny, being forced to the left puts you on a ramp that now moves you to the penny lane.
Or think of it as a car and a semi truck in the number 1 lane on a freeway. If they were both forced to the left towards the barrier by 3 feet the car would maintain being in that lane but the semi with the larger wheels would ride up and over that barrier and wind up in a different lane. (The number one lane in the opposite direction. )

The exit vents from the main pathway have walls of different heights, and only the coins which have a particular weight will have enough momentum to jump over the walls of the exit vents and fall down into their respective lines. The engineer who built this is a genius!!

If you watch, first, the quarters separate out to the right because they are too big to go left. Then, the nickels separate out to the left because they are too large to go right. Next, the pennies, go right since they are too large to go left. Which, lastly leaves the dimes to settle in between the nickels & the pennies.
If this machine actually erred, it could be a smaller coin mistakenly falling into a larger coins slot due to the coins being poured too fast.
