Only the size matters here. Take the penny and the dime for example… they follow the same route but as it gets closer to the end the curve of the plastic forces both coins towards the left (from the coin’s perspective). If you are small like a dime you stay in the slot but if you are larger like a penny, being forced to the left puts you on a ramp that now moves you to the penny lane. Or think of it as a car and a semi truck in the number 1 lane on a freeway. If they were both forced to the left towards the barrier by 3 feet the car would maintain being in that lane but the semi with the larger wheels would ride up and over that barrier and wind up in a different lane. (The number one lane in the opposite direction. )

My grandpa used to have something like this. He would pay us in coins for chores, then we'd get to use his sorting machine to count them up. 10/10 fun time.
It's because gravity is pulling it down the holes are big enought for each coin and first will be small to big so small go in first big go in last to sort it
The quarter has a lip at the top by the first curve. so the small coins won't hit that lip since it curves to the left. Those smaller coins stick to the right of the wall. But the q will hit the lip since it's as wide as a quarter, bouncing in into the quarter section. Then so forth

Understood how it works. It relies on the weight of the coins. The exit vents from the main pathway have walls of different heights, and only the coins which have a particular weight will have enough momentum to jump over the walls of the exit vents and fall down into their respective lines. The engineer who built this is a genius!!

I finally decided to move on, but It deserves a like/comment for making me sit here for over 5 minutes on loop. It triggered my mind to wander down a random path like magic.
If you watch, first, the quarters separate out to the right because they are too big to go left. Then, the nickels separate out to the left because they are too large to go right. Next, the pennies, go right since they are too large to go left. Which, lastly leaves the dimes to settle in between the nickels & the pennies. If this machine actually erred, it could be a smaller coin mistakenly falling into a larger coins slot due to the coins being poured too fast. Have a great day.
