It’s fair to criticize Shanahan for some of his decisions in these big moments, but to slander him as a choker isn’t totally fair. The guy made the Super Bowl with Jimmy Garropolo and has never had an elite QB. It’s not like he’s losing these games to scrubs either, he’s going up against all time greats. Andy Reid also didn’t win his first Super Bowl until he was in his 60s, Shanahan has plenty of time to change the narrative around him.
Coached in 3 Super Bowls and choked in all of em As a falcons fan 🖕Shanahan
I forgot that Shanahan was the Falcons defensive coordinator then.... Oh wait......@@JHub75
@JHub75 you can't talk about choking since your team laid the biggest egg against the Pats
Shanahan's biggest mistake was that in the 3rd quarter he stopped running the ball w the best RB in the game. He did not choke. Coming from this guy who roots for the Jets is a bit rich.
@@bruce5402 who was the falcons OC at that time? Shanahan
Evan is right, but the one thing he isn't factoring in is that the 49ers defense was just on the field as Mahomes drove it down to tie at the end of the 4th. I think Shanahan made his decision to give the defense rest. At the end of the day the 49ers defense HAD TO stop Mahomes. That was the only way they were going to win. They were not going to win on offense, asking Purdy to do 3 straight FG drives or scoring a TD + 2 PT is asking A LOT.
If anyone on wfan actually reads these, please tell Evan he needs to keep the beard until St Patrick’s day and wear the proper leprechaun fit
How about the fact the SF defense was just on the field and gave up a long drive to the Chiefs at the end of regulation. Maybe Shanahan wanted to give them a rest?
Going for 2 and missing it would be the all time super bowl blunder, you can't do that
Dan Campbell disagrees with you
and that's why Campbell is playing golf right now
@@jimwerther
I agree with Evan 100%. In College, all of the coaches choose to defer in overtime. You definitely do NOT want to go first. You want to possess the ball second. Why? By possessing the ball second, you know exactly what you need to either tie or win the game. If I'm the 49ers, I am not letting Patrick Mahomes go second knowing exactly what he needs to go win the game because he is probably going to do it. No, I want to go second knowing what I need to win the game. If Patrick Mahomes goes first and he scores a touchdown, my philosophy is going to be to get a touchdown and going for 2 to win the game. Now, hypothetically, the Chiefs could've scored a touchdown and made a 2-point-conversion. Then, when it's my turn, while I know my possession can't win the game, I know that I have to get a touchdown plus a 2-point conversion to match them therefore tying and extending the game. You must go second because of knowing what you need. Going first there is too much uncertainty. Kyle Shanahan, on 4th and 4, chose to kick the field goal. He thought that would be enough. With Patrick Mahomes on the other sideline, I knew it wasn't. You weren't beating the Chiefs with field goals. You have to score touchdowns. I would've definitely gone for it on 4th down. However, the 49ers should have deferred and never have given Mahomes the ball last with knowing what he needs to beat you because he was likely going to do it.
People don't like evan cuz he speaks facts
Evan doesn't understand the intent of the rule change. Both sides get the ball once. After that it is sudden death.
Someone missed the block on that last play before sf fg . . If Purdy has a second to throw he hits Aiyuk that is wide open in middle of endZone
Evan and his two point theory is like him talking out of his %#$
Look they took the ball first because their defense had just been on the field for a long drive and they were beat, how long do you think it would have taken Kansas City to drive the field again against a tired defense, not long, he took the ball first to allow the defense to catch their breath, his mistake was not scoring a touchdown on their possession, case closed.
To me this is the effect Pat Mahomes has on these Head Coaches now. They are so afraid of him that they anticipate things. Shanahan anticipated the Chiefs would score after the 49ers so he wanted the extra possession. It never occurred to him that if his defense holds the Chiefs he could score and win the game. Mahomes has these coaches thinking we can't stop this guy so we need to have the ball.
Their defense was also already gassed from the 4th street, he couldn't send them back out there
Certified boogeyman
Yeah, if Shanahan deferred, the Chiefs scored a TD and then the 9ers scored a touchdown, went for two and didn't get it he'd be getting ripped.
KC did a nice job on the runs between the taclkes, but those pitches to McCafffery were working well.
Listening to Tiki at the end, I am sooo confused about the new playoff overtime rule. Why is there a clock at all?
All that Shanahan Pride when he could’ve of just gotten Brady would have had three superbowls as a head coach already maybe four. Mike won with a hall of famers Vince young and Elway. I don’t see how he didn’t get the picture.
Tony Romo mentioned this during the broadcast - the real reason you defer is to get an extra down to convert because you know ahead of time when a field goal is meaningless. If the defense is tired, just use your timeouts.
The new overtime rule is as stupid as the new baseball rules sports are really getting ridiculous now just cuz it’s overtime should not mean u automatically get the ball no matter what that’s stupid make your defense do there job the rule was fine before
Taking first possession was the right call. 9ers should have gone on 4th down and played for a touchdown rather than settling for 3.
Nope
kc is an auto-touchdown in a game where they scored but 1 touchdown, and it was off a punt muff?
This interview confirms that we are living in the metaverse
That shot at Marv Levy was NOT fair. Marv simply lacked the talent in Buffalo that the NFC teams had then. He did a brilliant job reaching the SB 4 years in a row.
LOL One word: SCOTT NORWOOD
@@chiefjoes.wiggumindonutswe5662
47 yards from the hash was like 57 yards from the hash today. Tough spot.
@@jimwerther WTF When was the football field extended, did I miss that somewhere? Or are you saying that today's NFL rules dictate that a kicker stand further beyond the line of scrimmage than in 1991?
@@chiefjoes.wiggumindonutswe5662
The football is better, as are field conditions. 47 yarders were hit back then the way 57 yarders are hit now. Check the statistics.
Why are we talking about OT, and not his strategy in the third quarter?!?!
1:04 this right there is what’s wrong with athletes that used to play the game. They’re acting like the coach doesn’t put his players in position to either win or lose the game. And that’s why Tiki never won a Super Bowl. He obviously never listen to his coaches.
See!!!.. its all about the QB, BUT they want the RB to make it Easy for the QB.. and then they wanna put it on the QB back instead of RUNNING THE BALL!!!!!!! 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
Tiki I think know's he's wrong but you can't agree on radio - its entertainment
I wonder how Tiki would do as an NFL coach
Go Jets! 💚 Go Chiefs! ❤️
go for the 2 Pt conversion, when youre losing,, in the SB, instead of the extra point?? Thats insane!!
Insane…..pressure to match them and score a TD …then go for 2 ……no you can’t do that …Mahomes or no Mahomes..anything can happen a fumble a pick a special teams gaff a big penalty …play the game…let it all play out
That would have been what to do. Tie up the chiefs and go for 2. Because that's your chance to win. Give it back to the chiefs, and you probably don't get another chance of all they have to do is get into FG range.
You always take the ball in OT. Always. If both teams score a FG or both teams score a TD-extra-pt, would you rather be kicking or receiving once sudden death kicks in?
Anyone advocating kicking off in OT is demonstrably missing a logic circuit or two.
You better check those logic circuits. If both teams scored TDs, the Chiefs were 100% going for two. They were not going to let the Niners have the ball, only needing a field goal to win in sudden death. Obviously, you have never watched college football because the coin flip winner always kicks off.
Agree with Evan; with outliers and unconventional situations you need to think out of the box.
ref said at beginning ot..."new game"
What about a safety?
Or how about score a touchdown on the first drive so when he scores you only need a FG
There were 2 mvps of the game. Patrick mahomes cause he was spectacular in every clutch moment down the stretch. And Spags for sending the house at purdy on 3rd and 5 with under 2 minutes left so they couldn’t run down the entire clock and giving mahomes a chance.
If chiefs had ball first they would’ve punted on that 4th down. You can’t give Pat the ball knowing he has to score. Cause he will. He gets the ball first, he doesn’t have to score, wouldn’t have had to be as aggressive. His play elevates when game is on the line. Can’t let Pat get it second.
It seems like Shanghai tries to get too cute in the playoffs
On Mahomes fourth and 1 first down run, to quote Monty Python: "No one expects the Spanish Inquisition".
Lucky bounce on a punt was huge
Also, how often do extra points get blocked?
@@JohnMcGuirk-mo3id
This..... that blocked xp turned out to be the difference.
I never agree with tiki but man oh man you are wrong on this one Evan. Kyle's mistake was kicking the fg instead of going for it on 4th.
Evan is assuming KC doesn't go for 2 when they score the first td. I believe KC would have probably went for 2.
100% they were going for two.
all I know is you don’t give mahomes 4 downs to work with
Both teams had 4 downs
@@hens13 no the team who chooses to take possession first in OT would likely either punt or kick a field goal if they can’t score a TD. By kicking a field goal you allow patrick to use all 4 downs meaning kansas city wasn’t gonna punt, they were gonna drag that clock to 0 which they almost did. They could do that because your downs can transfer to the 2nd period of OT same as it would in regulation. Anyways by doing that you allowed patrick to try to make a play 4 times instead of 3.
@@victorjrortiz94 SF could use all 4 downs if they want. And if they matched scores it would go to sudden death and SF would get the ball
@@hens13 Hens your wrong. San francisco only had 3 downs. Once the they kicked the FG then it forced the Chiefs into 4 down territory (which we saw on that 4th and 1). If San Francisco had gotten the ball after the Chiefs, and the Chiefs had scored a TD then they would have 4 downs to work with. If you are suggesting the 49ers should have not kicked the FG and potentially given the ball to Mahomes only needing a FG thats just crazy.
@@SoxXxOwnsU The 49ers could have gone for it on 4th and 4. If you watched the game KC only had 1 real TD drive in regulation it wasn’t like this was a shootout. Regardless, analytics show this was the right move.
I'm going to seriously question any coach that doesn't take first possession in OT, you take the extra possession. There is no other way to play that scenario. The problem is they were facing Mahomes who needs 22 seconds to drive 80+ yards.... If they didn't take the football first, KC would guaranteed have scored and then the pressure is on a bruised and battered 49ers squad. Not sure Purdy would have scored BUT EVEN IF THEY DID, KC gets the extra possession and just goes and wins. There is no way you would ever give KC the ball first in any scenario with the new overtime rules. Sorry Ev, you'd be a terrible coach. Also if their kicker just makes that extra point.....
Even is right
You guys are supposed to be professionals . . . .get your focus on Tiki!!! Jeez.
such a good game and all they're talking about is pinning the whole game on to take the ball in OT or not to take?! ridiculous! i can't even listen to sports talk today because this dumb issue all they're talking about. fools! it's a 50/50 prop anyway, strong arguments both ways. on the very possible third possession it's SUDDEN DEATH! not worth debating this decision rather than discussing the plays that happened throughout the 4 hour game.
Stop what y’all doing this game was script and y’all know it.. it was clear as day
I thought Joe B was irritating, but Evan is almost as irritating. Shanahan is overrated and his so-called greatness is exaggerated. Luck finally ran out on San Francisco as they were lucky to get this far.
Sloppy game which we didn't see the best in either team..
I will take it, though!!
Go gets? Are you kidding? How many years since that joke of a franchise has been to a Super Bowl 😂
55 years
A sloppy Flag Football game!
Tiki’s iq is double what Evan’s is and not even talking football
Tiki should leave the fan he’s to soft for New York !
he appears disinterested many times!
Evan needs a shampoo.
yes greasy and dirty
Nerd alert!
This is why i hate sports talk... If the dummy on specials teams listened to his teammate and got away from the punt then we're most likely not even having this conversation.. Also, the D was gassed, taking the OT kickoff was 100% the right move by Shanahan.. It's frikin football, you had the lead in OT, if your D ain't good enough to make a stop then you deserve to lose.. You think the 2000 Ravens or 85 Bears are talking about this shit
