- The MuscleCar studio needs a new shop truck. And what better vehicle for the job than a '78 El Camino? To get things started they throw a GM Ram Jet 350 under the hood.
Gotta love the Flashback Episodes, they remind you how old you were when they were first aired.
Back when 350hp actually meant something.

I like this ram jet 350 small block it reminds me of the Fuelie from the 50s and 60s you guys did great on this new shop truck

One of my coworkers (I was 17 at burger kin) got in an argument with the mgr. Dude ripped off the mgrs toup in front of everyone in line and threw it in the fry bin and deep fried it. Couldnt stop laughing neither could everyone in the restaurant. Ah the good old days

I recall when I watched "Shadetree Mechanic" back in the day, they called each other "buddy" and "Pal" so much, I really thought they were being saccastic AH, and one time, we would come back from commercial, and find one of them dead on the floor.......

Used my 67 El to tote around my dirt bikes back in the day. Tailgate was lower than my 80s toyotas.
@@gordocarboyep. A modern pickup bed is at least three if not four feet in the air. An El Camino is about the only option.

Last work truck was an 02 SIlverado last of the non supersized trucks lol

Its funny the folks freaking out about the guests...this is how things were back in the day. OK, not on rural farms, but in the cities, everything was louder and bigger and flashier. it was called "attitude". and yes, it was a cultural shock for farmboys--I was one back then :)
The Ram Jet was for the older cruisin' dude who wanted EFI and not so much power he scared himself. His alternative was to search for TPI 305's in the junkyard, maybe a Corvette 350 pushing 245 hp. But old TPIs had wiring issues, and this was new and like they said, affordable to a rebuild after doing all the rust in your 57 Chevy.
You may think 350 bhp is low, but if you want to tow a new project vehicle...you don't want a racing cam under the hood.
I sure hope they beefed up that shitty transmission, lol
350hp horsepower is just fine for the 4L60E. They handle up to 400hp completely stock. The 4L60E is just an electronically controlled 700R4. The 700R4 is a slightly beefed up TH350 with overdrive. They changed the name of the 700R4 to 4L60 in 93 and did some slight upgrades.
@@CamaroAmx ask any S-series truck owner what we think of that POS and you may think again lol. They routinely go bad around 135K in those trucks and the 1500s as well.
@@billymasoner3735 my 93 z28 has 177000 hard miles on it with its 4l60 and the only thing it’s ever needed was a pump seal and trans line.
I work on those trucks all day long. The only s-series that had tranny problems I’ve ever dealt with was a 5-speed truck. I’ve been working on cars professionally for over 10 years in dealers, tire shops and independent shops and have been working on cars in general since I could hold a wrench. Fixing my own vehicles for 21 years, many my early ones came out of junkyards.
You take care of it and know the limit and you’ll be fine.
I personally can show you several Silverados with 250,000+ with their original 4L60Es in them some of them haven’t even had a fluid change in forever.

350 HP IS A DOG FOR AN OLDER HEAVY VEHICLE LIKE THE EL CAMINO . YOU WILL BE LUCKY IF YOU SEE 300 HP AT THE WHEELS .
Which is plenty for a Daily. Especially since the V6 they were available with barely crack 100 & the 305 was 190.

Whats the difference? 350 are cheap and can make tons of power easy.
Unless you grab an LS3 or better, or stroke one its not worth the converison
