Media 'refuse' to cover Alice Springs crime because of the 'original sources'

- Sky News host Paul Murray says the media are refusing to cover the issue of crime in Alice Springs “because of the sources that are telling the original story”.
“They’re dismissing it because it’s The Australian; they’re ignoring it because it’s Sky News; they’re pretending it’s not real because it’s 2GB,” he said.
“This will lead to half of the country not trusting the news.”
Mr Murray said the Northern Territory has seen “an explosion in crime” after alcohol restrictions were eased in the state, yet the media refuse to cover it “at a time when the conversation is about Indigenous Australia”.
“What does it say about the collective brain of the Australian news media, that supposedly they care about Indigenous people, but they won’t cover a story of a government decision in Darwin that has let the grog flow that now means crime is affecting everyone in the heart of Australia?”
I am indigenous man and like many other indigenous people who were born here, we want our town back, not in hands of other indigenous individuals who don't live here, who act like thugs. Right now the laws favour the criminal elements and don't do justice for hard working taxpayers - Norman

I lived in Alice for 10 years I worked in corrections youth lock up! It was bad then its worse now! And the silence is deafening.

For me, I lost faith in the media when they would not report on the 1000+ sexual assaults in Germany on New Year’s Day 2016/17. I kept trying to get the news and the CBC and others would not cover it. It made no sense as sexual assaults and rape culture are huge news for them. I later discovered that it was because the perpetrators were mostly migrants. I was completely utterly disgusted.

There was an aboriginal family a couple of blocks away from where i lived. We went to the same schools, had the same teachers, and had the same opportunities. Actually with all the indigenous programs they probably had mire opportunities than me.
For the first two or three years at school we were friends then they changed. They became the school bullies, hung around with the ‘tough’ kids, and started stealing. They stole my bike out of my yard.
The last time i saw them which was several years after school, they were hanging around the train station threatening to beat people up if they didn’t hand over cash or smokes.
I don’t understand why this happened or how you could blame society. I’m not a highly paid and respected member of society but I’m not a criminal either.

We never saw anyone leaving at regular times like they were going to a job yet they lived in the biggest house on the street and were constantly renovating. Their behaviour was atrocious they’d get pissed and sleep in the park, their kids would demand free smokes from the corner shop. One day a kid tried to buy a $2 chocky with 20c when the shop keeper told him to go and get more money his dad(?) punched her in the face! This was a 6’ ish muscly bloke hitting a 60 year old woman less than half his size. I dropped in on my way home from work to see her crying with two black eyes an possibly a broken nose. About once a month a fight would break out and there’d be around twenty of them beating the shit out each other in the street. They’d smash the windows and kick the doors in on any cars parked in the street, a brick was thrown through my window one night and when i called the police to report it i was basically told to pull my head in.

how were you raised by your parents? i can tell you right now those boys were raised in a slightly different way. (Not to excuse their bad/criminal behaviour at all) just pointing out a cultural lapse and fold that the aboriginal community never quite got in tune with. I lived in Alice 20 years ago and loved it. I went back last year and couldn't wait to leave. I spoke with shop owners who were pulling the pin as they could no longer afford to replace the shop front glass that would get smashed regularly, I saw full on brawls in the streets at all hours of the day. The place is a mess, it looks terrible and I would hate to live there now. Apart from hearing about it on 4BC you would not know its going on. Alice Springs will be a ghost town soon.

Have seen only one mention of the fact that under age kids can get away with crime due to their age. They laugh at police and law courts. The crime cannot be reduced till this has been changed. Kids need to face consequences. Dogooders need to stop saying it is the fault of everyone else and realise the kids actions are by choice.

Leave your leafy suburb and come and spend a week in any regional center with a significant Aboriginal population, then speak. I live in a town awash with crime and domestic violence perpetrated by a culture that wants to be given more power that will ultimately affect my life and my hard earned taxes. Based on population percentage, Aboriginals already have a louder voice in Parliament than any other culture in Australia. Giving a voice to someone based on skin colour or culture does not judge a human by his character but is blatantly is racist.

The Voice is not going to help anyone, especially the people it is 'meant' to. It is going to create further division in our society. By treating one group differently than everyone else tends to create resentment on one side and the other side just expects to be given everything. A uniform solution needs to be enacted. Thanks sky news. As a person who has worked and travelled to many indigenous communities. I have seen first hand how quickly violence escalates into a war zone type Canario.
