  • As of tonight I am fully off the grid again, in my camper in the forest. You can read a bit more here: www.thedoityour...
    I have been staying in a cottage on the property while moving into the off grid camper, which took me 5 months on grueling work. I had to hand carry boxes through the forest to the camper one at a time. Now I am finished and staying in the camper from now on.

    I completely know what you are going through. Although I have not completely lost everything yet, I can see it becoming more of a reality as the economy gets worse. I have been living in a 1948 Mid States Star for the past 3 years. It had not been used for 35 years & was a complete mess. With a lot of hard work & trial & error, I turned it into a pretty nice home. Jobs are scarce up here in Northeast Pa. I cannot seem to hold on to one for more than 3 months. Most are through those temp services. There are no benefits & I am still without healthcare. It really sucks to have to struggle in what is supposedly the greatest country. May the Lord bless you & all who are struggling to survive in these hard times.

    i just started watching your vids in the last couple days, knocked out most of them in a couple evenings. reading the majority of the comments you get disguest's me. Don t listen to these people. In my opinion ... You have allot left to learn and improve on. but your doing well for what you have. Me my wife and our 3 year old daughter live off grid in a custom 5th wheel that i built us years ago and on a small piece of property. its not as hard as people think and the quality of life isnt any less if you do it right, Starting out is always rough if you dont have a couple grand to sink into things. but the idiots miss the important points. 1 your alive, 2 your healthy, and well fed. 3 , reguardless of there attempts at BS your still doing well. even with all the people saying "oh your not safe, oh your shits gonna burn down, OH! your an idiot...." Yet your still there and doing just fine. . Keep up the good work, dont get discouraged, and enjoy your life as its no ones but your own choice on how you want to live it. :D

      Well hey, I have happened upon your videos not too long ago, and I am pretty sure you have far more fans than the Trolls would have you believe. Honestly, the best way to learn, is to make mistakes, and figure out how to improve our efforts.
      Looking through your videos, with my own experience with house construction and carpentry, I noticed little mistakes here and there what you have made in the past. however, what I like more, is having seen you learn from those very mistakes and improve upon your ideas and projects. =]
      We all don't have the world's collective knowledge stored in our heads 24/7, we all make mistakes. But keep at these videos mate, because no doubt you have inspired many like minded peoples to start their own DIW worlds too. =]

    Like so many people, you're going about sleeping-in-winter in a more complex way. Save the fuel; save the worry over burning up while sleeping....just get a 'professional' sleeping bag- one that goes to -20 or more.
    Use any kind of heat you like to get the thing to room temperature, then take off the clothes, get in the bag. Turn off all heat sources and let it go.
    In the morning, reach out and turn on a heater, when it's room-temperature, climb out and start the day.
    You never have to worry that you might start a fire at night...and if you're already wrapped up like a burrito, the heat isn't so much for you, as it is the bedding you're using.
    Keep in mind: people LIVE in these sleeping bags, at night, in ice and snow...windchill is no problem. And it'll save SO much fuel. I did this myself for most of 11 years...in Chicago.

    The wood stove has a water jacket full of water. The pipes go to a car heater core. Computer fans blow the heat off the heater core into the camper.
    A water pump keeps it circulating around. Simple.
    The expansion tank is there to take the pressure as the water heats up and expands.

    I lived in a 21 ft coachman catalina lite for almost 2 years. Although I was not directly in the elements. First I put the trailer inside a non-heated garage bay and lived in it for a year. then the second year I moved it on my buddy's father's property. I bought one of those shelter logic portable garages and put the trailer inside that, and I also skirted around the bottom with 2" foam insulation board. Not being in the direct elements and skirting the bottom would help a lot.

    Hi Troy I have a suggestion here leave the stove as is but install your car heater core heater way up as high as possible and maybe even put several in parallel what might happen then is the hot water from the stove will rise by itself in the piping system and return when a bit cooler this requires 2 lines one up one down this system is called a thermosiphon and will not require any pump at all I myself have used this for a solar water heater system keeping the collector lower than the storage tank with this system you must make sure there are no air pockets in the system or it will not work properly or not at all suggestion install bleedoff valves at the highest point of the system to catch any air and let it out

    • @TheDoItYourselfWorld

      bernard240vdc Thanks for the ideas. I happened to see this by chance. I may not use this stove in the coming winter. Lets see. I found an air tight modern stove I may use. Only things I can see that might become an issue.
    #1 The flooring in the camper is usually crafted from 2nd rate OSB board and isnt meant for full time living, I know from experiance when the camper I was living in had this problem and I found myself knee deep when I found a rotten section, which leads me to #2. Skirting around the exterior, even if its just some shabby decking boards or even just chicken wire to keep the critters from takin a liking to your comfy love shack though from your climate I would probably want something with insulating properties, in other words decking or insulated panals. The last thing that popped a bulb in my minds eye was your solar energy problem with the snow and overcast weather, a friend showed me how to make a wind generator out of a rebuilt car alternator and a fan, post that baby on a pole and secure it to the tip top of a tall tree or somewhere open that gets a good breeze and you should be able to help aliviate some of your energy shortages. Now let me say that I love the video's you put out and think you're doing a fantastic job, keep up the great work! :)

    You could capture more BTU's by wrapping copper pipe around your B-vent and/or the tank itself and including it in your liquid system.

    Thanks for this nice video. Its great to see off the grid experiences from people. A friend has his trailer and has been very fascinated with ideas from people who lives off the grid. We want to try it on a summer weekend.

    If your warried about the water tank blowing drill a hole into it and add a tap valve so when you don't run any pumps you can release any excess pressure from it

    You need a TEC system as an auxiliary to keep your heat going. With the thermal difference between inside and out you should be able to generate pretty reliably.

    Yes, I want to get a lot more batteries. I have another pair of batteries, but they are a different capacity so I cannot mix them. I plan to use an automatic switch to go between the two battery banks for now.

    Nice setup I know first hand you are grateful to have. the only practical fridge is propane powered I just use the outside its winter now. Best investment I have made is a 1000 watt yamaha inverter generator burns over 12 hours on half a gallon and I have 8 T-105 batts and 250 watts of panels but doesn't cut it. I have the gen hooked to a 10a charger that brings the batts back up in about an hour while charging my laptop made it through a dark winter month on 5 gallons of gas

    why not add a check valve to that hot water line so as it boils it pumps itself like a old style coffee pot? Then use a radiator with a thermal powered fan to circulate the heat. No battery power would be required but you could also make a basic steam powered generator indoors for recharging your batteries.

    • @alfr1
      @alfr1 Před 8 lety

      +Tropicalwebsurfer might watch for a small pressure relief valve (Automatic like a hot water tank has on it) for that steam powered generator; would not be good to leave it running unsupervised. LUCK!!

  • @gabtar54
    @gabtar54 Před 11 lety

    For long term liveability you need to get your water working without needing the pump. Install a small header tank outside, higher than the stove, and run your water through that, both outlet and inlet. It will thermosyphon naturally without needing pumps. You could also run copper tubing from that tank to your greenhouse or anywhere you want to keep warm, and then back to the stove to reheat, all for free.

  • @TheDoItYourselfWorld
    @TheDoItYourselfWorld  Před 11 lety

    Yes, that is my plan. Did not think about a pipe. Might work. Thanks.
