Paris Olympic Build: Sound Mind (Episode 3)

- This is week 3 of my 16-week build to the 2024 Paris Olympic marathon. At the beginning of the week I had to make the tough decision of whether or not to race the U.S. 25k Championships in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
I ultimately decided to forgo the race and focus on my training due to fitness and my Achilles. It was a tough call-I want it all! I want to train and I want to be fast already and I want to race as much as possible. But I know that the racing days will come all too soon, and I need to lay the foundation so that I’m ready. I'm grateful for my coach, Ed Eyestone, for his wisdom and his support.
We put in some solid work this week. Mileage and mindset.
In October 2023, I ran 2:08:00 at the Chicago marathon. Then, at the US Olympic Trials marathon in February 2024, I placed second and qualified for Team USA.
I will be racing the Olympic marathon at the Olympic games this summer in Paris. Join me during this training block as I prepare mentally and physically to compete on the biggest stage.

Whoever is producing this is doing a fantastic job. Quality is great, it feels like a true docu-series.
🤘🏼 thank you ! It’s fascinating to shoot.
@@AndrewStorerDP I agree with others' praise. This is the best running series I've seen.
@@AndrewStorerDPkeep up the good work man i look forward to watching these every time. first on my recommended.
I was thinking the same thing.
@@AndrewStorerDPyou’re doing a standup job bro keep it up! 👍
It’s such a privilege to see this in-depth into a professional runner’s routine, showing that even the greatest struggle from day to day.
Yo Johann I love your music classical is the best bro glad to see you still kickin'
This might be the best docu series following a runner iver seen. Sick production. Keep up the work dawg
This series is 🔥
Ward making a bold move in the white half tights! 😃
You keep up this quality and consistency up through the Olympics and I honestly feel like you and your production team could be in line for some CZcams awards at the end of the year.
Absolutely phenomenal production.
Thank you. Andrew is crushing it!
THIS SERIES MAKES ME WANT TO RUN THROUGH A WALL, LETS GO BOYS!!!!
Literally the best thing running on youtube right now. Keep the faith, Clayton, trust that process, the speed will come!
Absolutely love these videos. You guys are an inspiration. Thank you for sharing your process with us. Go Team USA! 🔥
Clayton, I love these videos. You are a class act and I truly admire you. Hope you come back to Cow Harbor!
Thanks! Cow Harbor 10k might be a tough turn around from the Olympics, but I'd love to make it out there to race again.
Clayton, great to see this series. Beautifully produced, and a real treat to see the prep that goes into a world class runner training for the Olympics. Us long-time competitive runners (D2!) get to see that it is, in some ways, high school or college writ large. The workouts are there, the endless miles and repeats on yet another bike path. And, also interesting for us long-timers: seeing Ed in these videos. Followed his career back in the day, and I still see him racing in that Reebok kit in the '88 trials. Really can't wait to see what you can do in Paris healthy. Keep it up! And the side-eye your youngest daughter gives the camera is classic.
hearing your mindset throughout this whole process is so inspiring
Sound Mind -> Sound Body
@@_Clayton_Young_ well played. 👏🏼 ASICS slogan AND a great mantra
Day by day my guy. Stay blessed, stay hungry, stay focused! The USA is right by your side. Every step of the way. ❤️😎
Thanks for the hype!
These are so, so cool. Thanks for taking us behind the scenes in such an intimate way.
Glad you like them!
@@_Clayton_Young_ Hey Clayton, I know it's an insanely busy time in your life, but I host a running podcast called Chasing Three Hours and would love to have you on to tell your story and discuss why you decided to bring this behind the scenes look at your process. Thank you so much.
You know it's a good day when you get home from work and you have a new video from Clayton!
thanks for taking us on the ride. the videos are beautifully done & love you sharing this insight into your training!
Thanks for your kind words!
Clayton - it’s amazing to me how much I have in common with you even thought we are running extremely different times at the marathon 😆. I’m a 2:48 PR and your talk on giving grace in the first few weeks of workouts + focusing on staying healthy is great. You’re getting me excited for my next build - appreciate you making this amazing content! Stay healthy and run hard!!!
Thanks for sharing. Good luck with your next build! You got this!
Sooo bloody fast… sooo bloody amazing 👊🏼
The pro athlete and videographer's work in this episode is absolutely fascinating, continue with the training and more episodes please!
Amazing what can happen when to pros from different fields come together!
This video is amazing!! Out of curiosity, do the people who live and drive around on the streets where you both train on ‘know’ who you both are? I mean, you both are not just Olympians but, even for an untrained eye, seeing you both run is literally poetry in motion. Silky smooth and run like wind. I am sure it’s beyond extremely difficult but, you both make it look easy. Good luck and best wishes!!!!!
Sometimes I get called Conner Mantz... and that's ok! 😂
The quality in this series has been incredible! Lets go!
Thank you !
It may not have been your intention but these videos are so inspiring, and seeing the dedication from you to your craft helps me in ensuring my own training stays consistent working towards my first marathon in September. Absolutely loving the series and can't wait for more!
Wow. Thanks for watching. My intentions are to keep it 100% real. Glad you enjoy!
What a great crew!!!
started watching these in support of the olympians... now i just watch to see those beautiful mountains in the background lol USA! USA!
This is awesome. I appreciate the honesty and seeing the details. I loved hearing your mindset around training with someone like Conner. Great stuff!
Love it love it love it
Grateful for you sharing your journey. These are so motivating to watch every week!
Amazing video, I’m excited to see the progress and you guys kill it in Paris!
These videos are fantastic, thanks for sharing them. I'm rooting for you!
Let's go! This is so inspiring, I'm always looking forward to the next video!
More to come!
Watched this right before running my 1K repeats and I heard you in my head..."we're gonna send it", "take care of one at a time", "flow like water"...not that my 1Ks were at 3 min, that is unreasonable at this big age.
Another great one. Doing this training while being a dad to young kids is amazing. Great work.
These videos have been my weekly source of inspiration! Thanks Clayton!
Glad to hear it!
This is some fantastic work and production. Go team USA !
Clayton, you're training may have not gotten off to the start you might have dreamed of, but these videos have set the bar extremely high for your channel. Great work from you and everyone involved!
Thank you. It has been a lot of work, but we are getting in a groove! More to come.
Just added a Clayton quote to my Strava profile. So inspiring as always. I literally can't wait for a new video each week! You're crushing it, Clayton! I admire how insightful and eloquent you always are.
Love it. You rock!
This is going to be such an awesome series
Track Tuesday and just the video I needed to get the day started ! Let’s go Clayton & Conner 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I love each and every one of these videos more and more. The glimpse into family life at the end gave me the chills. Rooting for you and the whole squad, Clayton!
Thank you! Ashley and the girls don't get enough credit. Hopefully we can show more of a sneak peak into all that Ashley does behind the scenes.
Amazing and quality content. Please dont stop doing this!

These videos are awesome. I greatly appreciate seeing the process and journey on your way to the Paris Olympics! Good luck and stay healthy training. 😄
Thanks for being here!
Rad runner dad❤
Love these videos , hope that Achilles stays calm , can’t stand it when I’m hurt
Agreed!!! It only takes one day of x-training to motivate me to do everything I can to get healthy just so I can run again.
so humbling to stay in tune w/ athletes who are running long runs at a pace that i did a mile rep at today during a cut down workout. stoked to be training for JFK50 in an olympic year w/ these videos complimenting the motivation ThankYou!
Love to hear it. Keep at it!
I'm too excited about these episodes. They're amazing
This series is phenomenal. Thanks!
Another excellent episode
So thankful you are sharing this journey!
another banger
So awesome! Conners running efficiency is just dead on.
Have to love hearing some Timo phrases come out
Good to know I’m not the only one who has good days and bad days.
would LOVE a live mph/kmph graphic when they're flying through these workouts! Would be so cool!
that 6:53 mark scenery is beautiful AF
Loving this series man! Y’all should make a full length documentary about it.
thank you asics and thank you clayton 🫡
And thanks to Andrew Storer for making the magic happen behind the camera!
Utah is beautiful
Awesome video; I loved your point about comparisons to one of your training partners. I think that that view is one that it is important for all athletes to understand.
Thank you! Comparison is a tough balance and something I have struggled with. My favorite advice on the subject comes from a talk by J.B. Haws called Wrestling with Comparison.
@@_Clayton_Young_ I have struggled with comparison as well. Thank you for the resource; I’ll give that talk a read or listen.
These guys are awesome!! USA USA USA!!!
I actually love these productions! They’re so well put together explaining the struggles and achievements!
Great production! Will watch out for you during the Paris Olympics
Thanks for cheering me on!
Thank you for sharing this
Clayton just remember anything can happen in Paris. You’ve already shown you can beat Connor.
Don’t need to win anything in these workouts. Paris are the roads that count. They will be yours for the taking.
Amen. Had to keep that mentality in the moment sometimes. But you're spot on. Thanks for watching!
What an incredible video
These are so fire, keep it up
These videos are awesome! Keep them up!
You discuss your mentality a lot during this episode, and speaking on being hyper focused on the goal. You’re an amazing runner and wonderful representative for our country. Win the minute, win the hour, win the day. Day by day you will get there and all those small wins throughout the day will power you to accomplish your task.
Good thoughts to ground me. Thank you!
Absolute hero status
Incredible content
Seriously Andrew doesn’t miss🔥 Super cool to see Clayton’s insights would also be pretty cool to see more of other athletes/coaches insights
More from other athletes on Episode 4!
It’s a crime to be this early 🤌🏽
straight to jail
Man the sound of ground gave me eargasm lol
Really enjoying these videos Clayton 🙂👍🏃♂️. Thanks again 👍
Thank you! 👍
wow an Olympian AND he can count to 100 😯
Great series. I’m running the marathon pour tour (marathon for all) in the Paris Olympics the evening after you guys run! Nice to see how you’re preparing for this monster course haha
So cool! The up hills are going to be tough, but I think the real challenge will be the down hills. Best of luck with training!
@@_Clayton_Young_ 100%. I’ll say a prayer for both of us 😂. 80 days!!!!!
Praying these calculated risks pay off and the Achilles gets better!
W channel
Do you have a particular time goal in mind during this training? How are you preparing for the specifics of the Olympic course?
A++ goal: medal, A goal: top 10, B goal: top 20. Paris is going to be really hot, humid, and hilly. Post run sauna sessions and hill work will be a big focus as we hit the final 8-10 weeks of training.
Very useful series!
Edge or Sky 👟?
I have used both over the years, but currently I'm in the Metaspeed Sky!
is there any way you can hook me up with some BYU split shorts I need them! thanks for the great docu series
Seems like trying out chunking has some influence from somewhere?
Id love to see what you eat!
Thanks for the feedback. I agree! Hopefully soon.
What are your guye Haircut, You ClaytonbYoung and Conner Mantz? XD
