I Made a Guitar from LEGO and Epoxy Resin..the LEGOcaster!!

- I made a guitar out of LEGOs and epoxy resin, aka - the Legocaster!! I’m so excited to share this Lego epoxy guitar build. I had no idea how the Legos would hold together with the epoxy resin, but in the end, I think the guitar came out pretty sharp looking.
The most challenging part of this guitar build was creating a solid guitar blank from the Legos and epoxy. I put the Lego pattern on a backplate, and put the Legos face down into a partially cured layer of epoxy, then poured more epoxy to halfway cover the Legos. After this epoxy cured, I could remove the backplate that was holding the Legos together, pour more epoxy resin over them to fill in the backs of the Legos. While the epoxy was still fluid, I added a second layer of Legos, and finally came back to fill in the entire form with resin. After I had the epoxy Lego guitar blank, I could just use standard woodworking processes for guitar building, to shape the guitar from the epoxy Lego blank.
I also added some custom Lego touches with a truss rod cover made from Lego base plate, and replacing the knobs on the guitar tuners with Legos.

I think the problem is the red. Maybe try using the green or purple for the tuning pegs.
Good call!

@@modustrial i hate the lego bits for the tuning pegs. if you went with the black volume knob, you should go with the black tuning pegs, for continuity, which, incidentally, looks cooler, anyway, and gives a nice contrast. cool build. impressive.

and the neck being a very wood look makes the whole thing look shit... and it sounds shit... so I guess it fits.
You should try using a Lego wheel for the volume knob

The volume knob should've been a Lego tire or some other circular Lego. They have lots of shapes now. But I think a rubber Lego tire would be especially cool. And yeah, the red tuners doesn't go with the color scheme but I like that they're Legos. Might as well keep with the theme.

You went with a analogous color theme with the guitar. The reason the volume knob and pads on the tuners didn't look good is because red is a complementary color, especially to green, causing a contrast with the other colors, giving it that "toy" look. I think if you used white for the volome knob, and purple for the tuners, it would of looked dope. Overall, cool concept.
Thanks! And yes, I agree with that analysis :)

With the green acrylic plate, this has a bit of a vaporwave vibe that I totally love! I think the reason the Lego tuners don't quite work is mainly because they're the only red part of the guitar. They so don't look super comfortable to grab and turn. I think if you switch them out for something already in your colour scheme- like maybe more green acrylic! - it would look perfect. This is a super cool idea and I absolutely love it! Looking forward to more guitar builds!
Thanks! Green acrylic tuners would be cool!
Insane. we're going to need to get our guitars together and jam out.... ha
Definitely! I would say at WBC....but the epoxy body is so freakin heavy I'm not sure about bringing it on a plane🤣
@@modustrial BRING IT!!!! please! would be cool to put in the TB booth!
I'll try to figure out a way!
@@modustrial Nobody told you that you had to fill the Lego with epoxy. It would have been much lighter with the air inside.
Also would have been extremely difficult, if not impossible, to cut to size....
The transparent neon green cover goes well with the whole LEGO thing, as that's also a LEGO color.
Yes, Transparent is the correct word here. Translucent means light can pass through, but you cannot see through it e.g. paper, or a milk jug.
Yup, you are right! Transparent green 👍👍
Two things to avoid breaking the screws. After pre-drilling, use a tap set, match the screw threads and create them. Use wax to lightly coat the screw threads so they don't bind. The wax is something I learned about from one of Dan Erlewine's videos.
A perfect guitar for lego-metal/post-lego. Now that's creativity!
The Lego propably made it more expensive than a pretty good guitar from the store
I love how he went the extra mile by making a back plate and routing out a control cavity when he could of left a hole and attached a lego sheet for the back plate...
Well that came off harsher then it should of.
Makes a whole new meaning for playing with legos.
LEGOS IS NOT A WORD! THE PLURAL TO LEGO IS LEGO!!

Finally someone properly patterning their bricks instead of making a mixed mess. Much appreciated.
thank you! After all the "you copied so-and-so" comments referring to the "abstract" Lego guitars, it's nice to have someone recognize my attempt to add some design elements and make a cool looking guitar, and not just a guitar that is cool because of the fact it is made from Lego 😁
Sweet! Glad you ditched the pink bricks - looks much better that way. The neon yellow electronics cover plate is pretty awesome as well.
Fun fact: the plural of LEGO is LEGO.
Thanks! And looks like I might have to change the title 🤣
@l o l Yes, actually LEGO customer service replied categorically to a similar question on Facebook a while ago (and I'm sure it's not the only time they have). The plural of Lego is Lego... or you can use the term Lego bricks, Lego minifigures etc. It appears it is only Americans who use the term Legos to refer to multiple pieces of Lego.
My sons love legos and I love guitars; however, the two shall never meet. Your skills are otherworldly! Great video!
Thank you!
Looks cool. The lego mechanics look perfect.
I've watched hundreds of different guitar build videos and come to the conclusion you can either build guitars well or play guitars well, never both. That being said, you sure know how to build guitars dude!
Lol, that is very tactfully put, and I agree :) at one point in my life, 20+ years ago, I could shred with the best of em, but, well, life happened, and I haven't played much in the last 20 years 😀
What a genuinely nice response. You're a good guy and honestly the guitar came out great. As others have suggested maybe tuning pegs of the same colour as the body would work better. Wild card, lego heads as tuning pegs...? Lol
Thanks! I try 😀 I'll probably be switching to the black tuners, since that's easier than creating more Lego tuners....less work = more time for the next project!
There's a lot of great pieces you could have used instead of carving everything out of 2x4 bricks.. especially for round things like volume knobs. I'm kinda at a loss for why you wouldn't just use 2x2 or 4x4 round bricks for that haha. Cool looking body though
Also I think maybe you aren't digging the tuning heads because the color really doesn't go with your color scheme, purple or blue would have looked nicer
Thinking the same thing!
drinking game: take a sip/shot every time this dude says "epoxy"
Good call on not adding the pink and red volume knob. I think blue legos for the tuning knobs should look best if you don't go with the black regular ones. It would match the main colour theme you've got going on with the cool tone colours. It helps to stick with the same colour groups and limiting yourself to 3-4 colours
I really suggest you take a color theory class. The lego knob and the tuning knobs looked especially bad/weird because the color just.. doesn't work. The white going through the guitar is even a bit offputting (but still works) compared to say.. something of a teal or something. The white might work better if it wasnt just smack dab in the middle ring of them. Looks very cool either way, but if you're looking to push your art further.. think about it
Lol you have me wanting to take a color theory class
Lol thats an opinion. How about a technical explination on what the color wheel is and how its used!?
You nob, thats an opinion, I like it, and appreciated the effort this guy gone through
it would be dope if this guitar looked like it was completely made with legos and less epoxy. 10/10 if you were able to use the guitar as a baseplate for lego building on top
I’m doing just that to my ‘03 Epi LP. Going all black thin LEGO on the body and the smooth top LEGO tiles for the side and back. Putting LEGO truck wheels for volume and tone knobs. They make so many different pieces now that you can get almost anything with any curvature for the body shape. All the pieces are about 1/8th thick, so when I put a piece on the body to see if it’ll work, they will be lower than the fingerboard and fit under my tail piece and the height of mu tune o matc. I’ll have to wing it on putting them around the strap pegs. Not sure what to bond them down with after a bit of sanding. Anyone with any ideas? I do lots of golf club custom work and might use the 3M 810 epoxy I use there. I’m not sure of spraying on a satin after or let it look natural.
Red clashes hard with all the other colors on the guitar. You SHOULD do lego knobs everywhere, but they should never be red. For the tuning knobs I would go with off set colors that match the body, but for the volume knob I would do purple surrounded by white in a similar way to the circles in the body.
That is the coolest guitar -- ever! 🎸 🎶 🎸

Thanks for the kind words Francois!
For the tuners how about putting a 1x1 brick to make them sit further out from the headstock. Great job!
Idea for the tuners...hollow out the backs of the 2x2 blocks, and shave just enough of the metal tuner knobs to fit the blocks over the tops (with epoxy). This way you still get the lego look and feel, with the security of a metal tuner. In other news, I know it's semantics, (maybe not), but why call it a 'Caster if you used a Les Paul as a guide? ;-)
Good idea for the tuners!
Re: the name, it's Lego cast in epoxy ;)
When you put the les Paul shape into the software, your final design reminded me of the Manson “t” design Andy Manson did for Matt Bellamy of muse
You're the second person who mentioned that....I checked it out and can definitely see the resemblance 👍👍
How about using small LEGO gears as tuners?
That would be next next level!
@@modustrial That's a great idea, but I'd go for the 4 stud red wheels, using your idea of epoxy filling the back and levelling up the front to make them finger friendly here's an ebay listing that shows the parts I'm thinking of: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lego-8-x-Vintage-train-wheels-4-stud-with-metal-pin-Pt-7039-RED-VGC-/202651725095

I really enjoyed watching this. In my honest opinion, there are a couple of things that I would have changed: you should have kept the Lego volume knob. That was a really nice touch, and I feel like a traditional knob makes this awesome guitar look a little cheap. The only other critique I have is not to use red Legos for the tuners. You have no other red Legos anywhere on the instrument, so they are a little out of place. Just use a different color for each tuner and it would add to the motif of the guitar.
Thanks! And I definitely appreciate the feedback 😀
@@modustrial I originally agreed with this post, but after 2nd glance, I think the original black tuners best compliment the black bridge and black pickup and black volume knob. Lego tuners, in my opinion, is slightly over the top.
Thanks! And that was the same thought process I went through :)

Love the bevels, the bubbles, and the green backplate
I love how it ecos kinda reminds me of the movie the crow kinda same sound as he plays his gutar
Amazing build! For the tuning pegs you could maybe use thin black or blue lego but use pieces that are back to back so you have lego texturing on both sides and then cut it to a somewhat round shape so they will be reminiscent of tuning pegs but also have some lego vibes. I think you could use layers of those really thin pieces that can stack together. Either way this was an awesome build! Looking forward to seeing more.
Thanks!

You could try using circular pieces, getting plate pieces in the colors you've used and make cylinders out of them. There are also smaller, 2X1 bricks that would be smaller. This would allow you to keep the rectangular heads but also be less bulky.
Play "fell in love with a girl" with it
I think this whole thing would've really benefited with a color scheme to stick with (probably why the red tuning pegs looked so out of place). Other than that, it's totally sick! Keep up the good work man!

"Caster" now has a new meaning in guitars: cast out of casting resin.
Yeah, but Cynthia Plaster Caster still comes to mind.
Great work! If you were going to make changes in the future, I would recommend swapping the guitar head altogether. The bricks look tacky, as you mentioned before. But its also the white head. Since it doesnt match the rest of the guitar that well, it makes the guitar look kind of cheap. You could go natural wood to get a new texture in there. if you were set on doing something other than natural wood, you could make an epoxy head that matches the pattern of the body.
This is really cool and fun! I agree that the tuning pegs would look a bit better if they followed the colour scheme. I also wonder what a deep blue or black finger board might do for the aesthetic. That's a lot of work, though and it's pretty sweet, already. :)
