  • Another British made gem from the fantastic Rob Hughes vintage dirt bike collection. This featured bike is a 1980 500 CCM that has been fully restored by Rob's mechanic Alec Middleton.

    I managed to break one of the foot pegs off a CCM 500. the casing had to be replaced as the casting that the foot peg is bolted to with the foot peg still attached broke off after it hit the tarmac of the Birmingham NEC 1980 Bike show. I was a member of the White helmets motorcycle display team and we was doing daliy shows at the bike show. I was the car jumper on a 1978 CCM 500 and I was running out of arena after successfully jumping the car and had to lock the back wheel and lay the bike down as I was quickly running out of space to stop before hitting the barriers surronding the arena.

    I remember going to races with my pal on his YZ250K, there was always a couple of the Silver Ally tank CCM 500s, man, you could hear them coming half a lap away. I know this is probably sacrilegious, but I would love one of these as a 'retro' scrambler for the road, similar to the Modern 'CCM' versions. It's so steeped in classic British Motorcycle manufacture and racing lore.
    It's so quintessentially British.
    Got that R. J. Mitchell, (Spitfire), and Barnes Wallis vibe. 💚.

      Thanks again Twisted Trigger Enduro It certainly is a bit of work to put these together between the distance to drive to actually film the bikes initially , editing, and then script writing and in fact it was an almost 900 mile round trip for me to film Rob’s collection but it was well worth it in the end. But thanks again for your support.

    This is my favorite vintage motocross Channel,your into is correct . That CCM is gorgeous. Wish we had them here in the states . Cool to see the pegs mounted on the cases. Never seen that before ,never had disk brakes on my dirt bikes . Oil in the frame a first again. I loved the small of castrol R . One quart of oil in a 5 gallon can of high test. Thanks for the upload Chris. I enjoyed it a lot .Snows a coming time to put my plow on my Grizzly.

      Hi Joe thanks again for your comments nice to hear from you again and your correct this is a very nice looking bike as of course are many of the Clews CCM’s. Watch what your doing in that snow were just getting started to winter here in Scotland but no snow just our usual wet, windy and cold. Thanks again for your comments.

    Stunning bike, I had a 79 gold tank model that would have been near identical to this bike, unfortunately the previous owner kept the 4 valve 3 speed engine and fitted it with a 2 valve earlier engine. The 79 models although looking very similar with the same front end had remote reservoir ohlins rear shocks and still used the B50 crankcase mountings. The crankcases on this later bike are quite a bit different and mount differently as a result.
    Many thanks for such a high quality and accurate video.

      Thanks for your feedback “Brit-Toolmaker” and glad you enjoyed my content, yes Allan Clews did make some fantastic looking bikes back in the day and these 1980 bikes were among some of the best that’s for sure.

    It's been along time but I had a brand new 608cc CCM when I was 15 back in the 70s. I earned the money for it it was beautiful. If you even mentioned brakes you were a fairy.

      Bought one in 72 a 608. Then a 500 in 74. Several other friends had them as we were all racing in Germany while working for the military. Quality was a issue and we all switched to Cheney TT500 Yamahas.

      @@noelthornburg2708 I still have a '76 TT500 that was modified and raced into second place by Andy Baines at the '80 Fourstroke Nationals at Carlsbad. He epoxied the head on to keep the ridiculous compression inside the 540cc chamber. I didn't fully follow through once while starting, and the kickback ripped my chicken leathers all the way up the inseam. If I can figure out how to get the head off, I'd love to restore it after being frozen for 25 years.

      @monticlassictv  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Rico 500 Thanks for your comments . . that bike you raced back in the 1980’s would probably have been one of the very rare CCM’s that had the Italian Hiro two Stroke motor in the frame. The also made a 250 in 1980 with a bigger 250 Hiro engine but again thanks for taking the time to view my content.

    Hi,Chris. Really enjoyed this video. It takes me back many years to when I saw a brand new CCM being uncrated and made ready for the customer at Douglas Motorcycle Centre on the Isle of Man. I also remember fondly watching Bob Weight,Vic Allen and other top names on CCMs competing at the Douglas Head Grand National events here on the Isle of Man. That would be early to mid 1970s
