If that were true, it would have made more sense for him to sign for eight years so he could coast and keep the money. As it stands, he needs to continue to produce at an elite level if he wants to capitalize. He'll be in his 30s at his next contract singing. If he's coming off a sting of weak seasons, he'll make a lot less on that contract than he would have if he'd signed for 8 years. Even worse if the he hasn't had post season success. @@mv3380

That's right. People who think this contract should have been longer don't focus on that part. I'm just glad he signed. Now, all this team has to do is play in annihilation mode. @@bucketophil A lot of players who won cups actually did. And yes, I would accept 10-15% less money for other intangibles. Most people actually would after a certain threshold. For me, if my stress is much lower at 135k compared to 160k, that would actually be worth it for example. Or if I could work from home. A lot of people would actually think like this, so your point is honestly pretty bad. Stop apologizing for the highest paid player in the league who is currently not the best player. I can think of several players I would rather have on my team for cheaper.

We have watched him grow up from an 18 yr old into the mature young man he has become on and off the ice a future captain of this team after JT 5 more years it will help the other guys sign mid term deals since he is staying.
I'm glad he's here, but everyone needs to cut the BS and come out and say the main reason. He's positioning himself to always be the top paid guy in the league. It's smart, I would do the same thing, and so would anyone reading this. More power to him.

But let's be honest on the reasons.
He’s positioning himself to capitalize and make the most money at each stage in his career with Toronto, yes, but this contract will quickly be dwarfed by multiple players after next season. I think 13.25 is too much, but it’s a business. he really could’ve gotten a lot more if he went elsewhere too
It shows that he believes in himself which is a positive. A lot of players would want the security on the possibility that they might hit a decline. I'd rather have Auston bargain up, or ditch Toronto altogether after winning a cup or two, than play his heart out over eight, fruitless, declining years.
And at the end of the day, he’s dedicating the first 12 years of his career to be a maple leaf. He could have left for more easily. Despite the hate, every team and every fan base in the league wants him on their team and he chose us. The playoff record sucks, but there’s been stretches where he’s won us playoff games, against washington, columbus, and tampa, he showed up more than people admit. it’s not his fault dubas created such a top heavy team that was never set up to win when it matters. Idk how you can remotely be upset with this as a leaf fan

I can’t lie I happily surprised he re signed. I thought for sure he’d wait it out and walk to UFA. He may still leave at 30 but you know what we got his best years, now it will just be a shame if we can’t put a good enough team around him
Top 3 NHL centre. Only 3 guys in the NHL last year had net positive penalties, over 50% on faceoffs, 70+ hits, 50+ takeaways, 40 blocks & over 80 pts. They were McDavid, Crosby & Matthews. Despite some alleged Leaf 'fans' claiming he's 'soft' because he doesn't chuck 'em, they are full of crap. In the 2 series against Tampa, over 13 games he has 9 goals, 18 pts, 51 hits, 17 blocks, 52 SOG & is a +4. Against Florida & the red hot 'Bob' he had just 2 pts, with 26 SOG, 3 posts, 2 crossbars, 19 hits, 11 blocks. NOT soft. Nylander had 1 hit, 0 blocks, 24 SOG. He was -4 for the playoffs. Soft. This contract is completely fair. No issues. He left $ on the table as opposed to what he would've got as a UFA (likely 15M aav) next year, so move on.

In early July I posted the following on my facebook page concerning Mathews.
Auston Mathews average points per year over the past 4 years as a percent of total team points was 12.3% and his best season was 12.7%. But his salary as a percent of total team was 14.2%, so he underperformed his contract and we over paid him by $1.4 million a year roughly if he had earned 12.7% of team salary as per his production. If Mathews continues his 12.3% point production, his salary should be $11 million. If he improves his point production by 20% to say 14.7%, his salary should be $13.2 million. Any consideration of a salary more then this is suicide for the team because Mathews just hasn't shown that type of production to warrant $14 or $15 million a year. And paying him this amount will only magnify itself when Marner comes due the following year.
So I think Treliving did a respectable job with this contract, unlike Dubas

We are allowed to cheer for different teams but why not atleast respect one another in the process? There's very few players I've disliked over the years but it has nothing to do with the team they play for. My buddy played on the Canadiens, so should I now hate him? Well he is definitely a man of his word. Even tho everyone els said he was going to pull a Tavares or Johnny hockey like scenario. By I never had my doubts! I knew he would resign. Toronto has the luxury to give the players what they need in regards of recovery, nutrition and being treated like first class 24/7

After the 8 year commitment of Nylander, this deal looks better already. Long contracts rarely works out for the team and the player ends up creating regret and animosity towards the player when their performance inevitably declines. I hope he gets better and better with age so more earning power to him if that’s the case.

He didn’t give up anything regarding AAV, he got a full NMC all 4 years and we are paying him 95% of his pay as signing bonus which will be taxed more favourably. What exactly did Brad negotiate? I could do a better job as GM.
Matthews was 22nd in scoring last year, and has broken 100 points just once in his 7 year career and somehow deserves to be paid as the highest paid player in the NHL…..has he ever taken this team and put it on his back in the playoffs? Has he ever gotten us past round two? At a time when players like Thachuk, McKinnon, Aho, Meier are all committing to teams for 8 years and taking a little less to build a winner AM is only about getting paid and playing on his terms and essentially putting this team in the same terrible position Dubas put us in in the first place. Shame on the Toronto media and fans for not calling this out and lambasting it for the terrible deal it is.

Unlike Gudas and O'Reilly (who have both recently publicly spoken to not wanting to play in Toronto due to the limelight), Matthews definitely revels in it. Here is a guy who knows that by signing this contract he's going to be a Legend in Leafs Nations for the rest of his life. He doesn't want obscurity, he wants glory. Matthews is already creeping up on the All-Time Leafs Scorers and will easily be at the top of the list by the time the four years is up. All the power to him for it.
O'Reilly didn't like the pressure so he took the retirement contract with Nashville.
O'Reilly (the only reason the Leafs beat Tampa Bay) left to join a real organization.

Austin Mathews not demanding top dollar at least demonstrates commitment to the team and his teammates. It also allows the organisation some wiggle room to get some depth. Other top players on the Leaf's bench, take note. The Avalanche used this as a strategy two seasons ago. Not demanding top dollar, gives salary cap room to acquire and develop talent, so when you get closer to the Cup, you have some depth that can be called up .

If dubas didn’t cap strap this team with the tavares signing, and built a more balanced and deep lineup around matthews, marner, nylander and Reilly, all of their legacy’s would be different by now. People still say he’s only doing it for the money, yet he could’ve gotten way more elsewhere. He will have dedicated 12 years to this team and potentially more when all is said and done. I love sundin, always will, but he is slowly becoming my favourite leaf of all time and wish he got more respect
