    I've been playing the pipe organ for about six months after 16 years of piano, and it is just the world's most incredible instrument. You and your brother have been inspirational! I have actually been hired as the pipe organist for a local Catholic church despite my lack of experience as there are so few organists in my area. This video was invaluable; thank you so much for all the information!

      @@Offshoreorganbuilder That was why I started learning piano as a child - I heard a pipe organ and insisted on learning it; my parents finally started me off on piano the next year when I was seven. For me the purpose of the piano was to be a stepping stone to the organ, and I am so grateful that my family were willing for me to start studying music. I forgot the organ mostly for many years, but I eventually got to the organ and it was all worth it. My only _possible_ regret is not having started on the organ a number of years.

I know that startup costs are crazy expensive and signing in or up with a parish might be difficult. But as long as I've played. The AGO is wiling to help out any way they can, so you can take the bench. Sometimes a keyboard repair tech has an old stack of manuals they are pulling out of an old Rodgers or Allen instrument, hook it up to Hauptwerk and just take time EXPLORING the instrument. It never ceases to amaze me on how much brain power and mechanical dexterity is needed to play the King of Instruments! How a relatively simple musical piece played with just one stop pulled sounds kind of vanilla and lifeless, then the same piece played with many stops and couplers pulled totally transforms the piece to nothing short of amazing! Another thing I find interesting is how a piece is transformed from what would be a tune written for piano to transcribe for organ. I will never learn to play a piano or organ..but still found this "instruction" nothing short of awesome!

      I am 18 and three weeks ago I started to play at Friday evening masses :) After maybe 3 years of practicing at home, playing just for fun using Hauptwerk... Trust me, there is nothing better than singing choir that you´re accompanying by playing this beautiful instrument... Classical pieces are not my cup of tea, I need more practice to play them... I just learnt Sarabande by G. F. Händel (from HWV 432) and I think that it is a good starting piece into the world of romantic composers... but I just like baroque more, started to learn Bachs BWV 578, but after first page of three I´ve got tired of learning it... Also Jean-Paul Verpeauxes "My Little Organ Book" IV - Passacaglia in D minor is a beautiful piece to learn as it is god with or withou the pedal line.. Jut keep on Kevin and legoguy110, you will get to playing these beautiful pieces as well as others did if you will train :)

      Of you are an accomplished pianist you know it's not easier to play. Playing chopin scherzos or Ballads or Beethoven sonata s or rachmaninoff concerto #3 takes years of practice. Part of art of playing piano is how much that's applied to the keys. It makes no difference how much pressure is applied to keys on a pipe organ. Pedal work on pipe organ is difficult and not done on acoustic piano. They are two different instruments and not to be compared ..Both take much dedication and practice to become accomplished. Many people piddle around on a piano not knowing how to read notes or have developed proper technique ..they really don't know THE ART of Playing piano.nor the pipe organ.

Finger substitution is something I hadn't heard of before, I don't suppose you ever use this on a piano, or at least rarely, but the ability of the organ to sustain a note makes this so obvious, now. Yet another thing for the organist to get a hold of. You really are a breed apart.

    And I have fond memories of listening to dad practicing this piece for hours, before advancing to Bach's Toccata and Fugue. Regarding technique: always play fully into the keys. If you have an organ without a mechanical action to the keys, you may find that notes play without the keys being fully depressed and this can potentially lead to poor technique if you don't stay in the habit of fully depressing the keys. I have had firsthand experience with this.

  • @bobh5087
    @bobh5087 Před 4 lety +2

    You're a good teacher, Jonathan (probably because you had good teachers).
    And I'm delighted that you mentioned that organists should play the Pedals with the INSIDE EDGE of their shoes! I see so many ("famous") organists using the most inelegant and clumsy pedal technique - and playing, precariously, on the outside of their shoes. This is not only lazy playing, but is a great hindrance, resulting in an awkward lack of control and accuracy. And knees should always be positioned right over the feet, as you demonstrated in the pivoting excercises - with heels together, unless notes require a larger spread between feet.
    One thing organists should always remember, especially beginners, is NEVER HAVE SILENT MANUALS when playing the organ. All manuals that are not planned for use during a particular piece should have at least Flutes 8' & 4' drawn. This can prevent a very embarrassing situation when you accidentally start playing on a "wrong" manual - and there's NO SOUND!
    For those just starting out, buy a pair of *tap shoes* from a dance supply company, minus the taps. These make the very best "organ shoes"!
    Thanks for the interesting demonstration, Jonathan. And good luck with your new book. I hope you and your brother Tom are staying well.

    • @Sathrandur
      @Sathrandur Před 4 lety

      I would agree that it is a useful idea having at least something drawn on all manuals when improvising as one never knows when it would come in handy to have something (contrasting or not) ready on another manual. But with written repertoire I tend to think silent manuals are safer if they are not being used as it's possible to accidentally clip keys on other manuals which is much more likely than going to a completely wrong manual for a piece that has been practised, especially for advanced repertoire.

    I for one, sincerely appreciate these videos you've shared - both 1 & 2 and are a valuable resource for me. I DO know a little bit about such things, far from a qualified, skilled or accomplished keyboardist at all. BUT the desire is there, the software instruments (VSTs) are among some of the tools I have. I WISH I had two keyboards and and pedal board. Sadly that's not in place.....just yet. But these are very interesting, informative, and instructional videos and I appreciate learning about these instruments greatly. You're explanations and demonstrations are superb and I may have to invest in the books even though it's not immediately likely I'll ever get opportunity to play in a "real life" situation or on a quality instrument. But for now, a simple single keyboard or two, hooked up to the computer with great software VI organ libraries, and perhaps I'll get all the enjoyment I can stand playing and/or producing some music of my own. But for now, these videos are superb. THANK YOU AGAIN!! Brilliant sir.

    I would like to know who the d-bags are that give your videos thumb downs and why. You and your brother are extremely affable and enormously talented. Thank you for your contributions to the music world. I’m always impressed and entertained. Bravo! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

    An Inspiring tutorial, the practice of last bar, then next and on etc now makes sense. Question: do you have multiple pairs of organ shoes ?
    and how long does it take you to make them comfortable to play in that you dont notice them ?

    Why start the RH fingering 123 for the first phrase, then play the same phrase again using 234? Why not just start on 2 the first time?
    Amazingly clear video btw, loving it!

      I agree with you on this point. I am a piano teacher and always have a student begin each piece with both hands together; later, if necessary, hands can be practiced alone for particularly difficult passages to work these out.
      Yes, this video is amazingly clear and gave me the knowledge I was seeking to understand how to play a pipe organ! Magnificent instrument; I wish to learn this keyboard instrument and give a few recitals in the near future.

    I'm an organist and I like playing J.S.Bach the most. I always looked forward to playing the Sunday morning hymns while the congregation sang the hymns. The organ was a 13 rank pipe organ that was well cared for always being in tune. When the new pastor came, the organ was torn out and thrown into the dumpster like common garbage. Totally destroyed. The new pastor needed the space for the guitars, drums, strobe lights, oversized speakers, dancers etc🥺

    I think we are missing a very advanced level book, something to compliment Dupré and Falcinelli!
    How advanced are the most advanced exercises in this book?

    • @epincion
      @epincion Před 4 lety

      He does say in his intro that this is book 1. I imagine if he gets to books 2 and 3 then he will cover advanced levels. Not that you need such instruction:)
