    Reading the rules in preparation to upgrade from public skate to freestyle sessions, I kept getting stuck on (all caps) “NO STANDING IN THE LUTZ CORNER!” Now I understand thanks to you.

    This is great. I and no idea about most of these etiquette rules, although most of my skating is done at public skates with a lot of older people who just skate around in circles. It has taught me to keep my head up and my eyes open, because I know the other skaters may not be aware of what's going on around them. And may I take this moment to wish you a very happy wedding. I'm sure it will be a wonderful day that will bring you a lifetime of memories. I'm so happy for you❤

    Extra rule: have discernment for others on the ice. We are all here to practice so learn how to SHARE!!!! If you are not a coach, have class, or not preparing for a show, do not purposely get in people's way and move them out of their little practice spots. If you are there to teach your best friend something you learned in class, do not expect people to move out of YOUR way CONSTANTLY. Look where you're going and don't expect people to look out for you instead. Ahgh!

    During public skates at my rink, no ones allowed to practice their program because it takes up the whole damn ice. Also I'd say thats its really rude for coaches to bully solitary skaters out of their practice area during public skates, we paid the same price to get in as you, and I don't care if you're practicing something specific, so am I and I deserve my ice time and space just as much as you do.

  • @maureenrowbotham1324

    Thank you!! I've been a skater for decades and have seen so many kids just not know or care about etiquette. They'll do jumps right thru the center, yell at you in a spin and say excuse me, do the jump a foot away. Heard many coaches and some parents yell at the student full blast. Kids will play their music 5x in a row. I know coaches (I'm just going to say it, Russian) who could care less about anyone else on the ice. And their students do the same thing. A kid will be on the harness and the Russian kid will jump a 2x axel right next to them. I've seen it all and been run into also. Adults also don't know the rules but are generally courteous. So these rules need to be posted, not on a board outside the ice area but right next to the ice. Thank you

    Great video! I think one of the biggest infractions at our area rinks are coaches who coach in each of the Lutz corners at the same time for much of a lesson. I will run through my program just to gain access of a lutz corner so I can get my Lutz jumps in.

    • @CoachJulia

    Like you stated, make sure to read each rink’s rules. One rink my daughter skates at allows personal listening devices like from a watch or an AirPod. Another rink we frequent explicitly state we are not allowed any devices on the ice and must play music on the rink speakers.

    You just gave me piece of mind. Yesterday, we have fobs, and when I scanned mine and it jumped me in front. My coach said that was because I haven't done on that day yet. Then Later, she pushed my music in front. I felt really bad to go in front. But so I told her we could do later because I felt really bad. We ened up not practicing my program again. I am so glad that you clarified that it is okay, that we have 3 cuts in a lesson. Thank you ❤️

  • @PecanSandees23
    @PecanSandees23 Před rokem +4

    Great video. May I add a few things?
    1) There are clockwise or lefty skaters out there. The Lutz corners are ALL corners because lefties jump in the edge jump corners.
    2) Do not spend an entire freestyle session practicing your crossovers in the clockwise/lefty lutz corners. People are trying to jump around you.
    3) Limit the number of figure 8s you do in the lefty lutz corners for the same reason as #2.
    4) Keep an eye out for backward spirals. They’re in the Intermediate Moves, I think.
    My rink doesn’t use a belt, sash or vest when your program is playing. It’s a mess sometimes, but the skaters refuse to wear them. I’m a lefty and I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve circled the rink to do a jump only to have someone laying out a figure 8 for the twentieth time in the lefty lutz corner. We’re all there to practice and have a good time. People just need to be considerate. ❤

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  Před rokem

      I think that last sentence is really important. People need to be considerate.

    • @TheRindy84
      @TheRindy84 Před rokem +1

      I think a lot of that can be boiled down to a be considerate be kind mentality. When I was first getting on freestyles I knew I was in serious learning mode and would break the ice with a "hi, hello I'm so and so I'm kind of a baby at this so if I am seriously in your way or you need me to move etc. please feel free to let me know" and I meant it. as a new skater it's easier to be so focused on your element that you loose sight of where you are. To a certain degree I do think it more incumbent of more advanced skaters to be aware of those less than (not to be disparaging). I practice on publics as well, so, as annoying as that can be, I know I have more tools in my bag to avoid collisions and injuries. Actually leapt over this kid on a little seal who basically came right at me (I think I was either starting a pretty basic spin or coming out I forget) Thankfully nobody was injured but sure scared the crap out of me.

  • @yjchoi17
    @yjchoi17 Před rokem +9

    Really love this video. I was having issues with a fellow adult (but decades younger than myself) skater who I took small group lessons with. Lessons weren’t an issue, but during public practice sessions, she would always “invade my territory” by skating past really fast, doing spins in front of my turns, etc. Worst part is that when I say screw this and move over to another section of the rink, she would follow and repeat. Oh yeah, she even does the “stand still in the middle.” Even my 10 year old kid says she needs to learn some etiquette. Now we don’t see eye to eye (not that we ever did) and pretend that the other person doesn’t exist. I want to keep it civil and don’t want to start yelling and pointing fingers…
    In a different context, our rink also has speed skaters. In fact, they are the majority while figure skaters are the minority. (That’s the norm here in Korea) There is some sort of territorial battle between the two disciplines, even during lessons. You can imagine what it’s like in public sessions then. Sad part is that the speed skaters always win since they act as a team while we are lonely individuals.
    As for my past week of skating, I got started with counter turns. Again, like rocker turns a few weeks ago, they didn’t go very well, so another thing to work hard on. Forward scratch spins…I think I found my optimal positions (arm angle, leg angle, back arch etc). I managed to get a few rotations on a spinner with those positions. Hope that translates to some meaningful progress on the ice. I really want to get over this spin…😢

    Thank you Julia, this was so interesting! Where I live (in Germany), we don't have freestyle sessions, just public skating and then lessons where it is only my group and one coach - we are a very small club though. So I haven't even heard of the different corners. Baby skater me would be so intimidated by skating in a freestyle session with all these rules and how not to annoy anyone 🙈

    Thank you so much for mentioning moves in the field. I was working on adult pre bronze moves and felt pretty uncomfortable at one rink I went to. Not the whole time thankfully but I was specifically trying to practice the waltz 8 pattern (bane of the test at that point) and this guy kept cutting right through my circle. I couldn't help but think "look dude show me where you want me to be that won't be in someone's way and I will gladly go there" Heck I wouldn't care if the whole rink banished me to a section of the ice and said you stay here. LoL I would have been like "you got it! I can work with this!" LoL Got my butt up at like 4:45am to make it to a 5:30am freestyle no way was I leaving. LoL

    This is really fantastic; as a relative beginner who picked up skating during the pandemic, all of my skating has been at public leisure skates--and not knowing the etiquette is definitely something I'm nervous about as I think about trying to go to figure skating freestyle sessions to get more space to work on things like footwork, patterns, and jumps. Having some sense of what to expect and how not to immediately out myself as an uncouth neanderthal is a *huge* help!

    • @jrg305
      @jrg305 Před rokem +3

      People who mess up are not uncouth Neanderthals. I just picked up the sport recently, this is my 8th sport, and this also is the sport with the most primaDonnas compared to any sport I have ever done. I did not want a private coach for the first few years because I was getting enough from the group classes and people were friendly. Then you go on the freestyle sessions because there is limited ice time, in general, and as an adult don't have time to go with work in the middle of the day. Being given dirty or passive aggressive demeanor by children who are homeschooled or overly choreographed dancing instructors is cringe for them. Learn to communicate your feelings without being passive aggressive. Some of us got here via different paths and apparently didn't know there are unsaid rules no one wrote anywhere. Being passive aggressive doesn't make people like you. From someone new to the sport, I paid my money for the rink too out of my own money I make with my own two hands. My parents don't pay for it. If coaches want to run their patrol belt programs on a 6:30p Wednesday evening session instead of a 5-9a freestyle sessions that are available for hardcore uppity people, don't complain when there are decent yet new adults at hours after work.
      The culture in this sport is 🤢. Most of yall aren't going to make it to the Olympics and take yourself too seriously.

    So if I am taking private lessons and learn to skate lessons and I want to go to Freestyle skate to practice forward crossovers and other basic movements I am learning, where am I supposed to go on the ice? Public skate sessions are a nightmare when trying to learn as people are clueless and all over the place. Also, when I have been in a private lesson in public skate, I feel like my coach and I are always getting pushed out of the way by other coaches and their skaters, and are constantly having to move and start over on whatever we were working on. Do new skaters just not get the opportunities to skate freely during their lesson? I feel like sometimes I have to fight for ice space and it is going to take me forever to learn skills. Please advise...

    I always wondered about this. I usually practice on public ice, but sometimes we get „group lesson space“ next to the pros, and there are so many and they are so fast so I‘m really scared to mingle. They seem to know what they are doing, and where everybody else is going. It is kinda impressive.

    For the topic of where to do what: do you have any recommendations where to teach beginners, so for example crossovers? I find it very difficult on a freestyle session when doing things like steps that don't go all the way around on the perimeter to find an adequate spot where my group isn't in the way of the older/faster skaters, since these inexperienced skaters still have a hard time noticing when they're in someones way.

When you're good, get used to Bullys. It's up to the rink management and guards, Otherwise, here in Massachusetts, we have over a dozen State Rinks, $250/hr, a wink and a nod all the time you want. Plus no Bully's in the Bay State, check out our State Rinks, plenty of ice time for cheap, $6/dollar for 2 hours, Thanks Coach

    As a reverse skater I don't like how all the edge jumps good in my lutz corner because when I'm doing a lutz everyone is in my way and sense where I should do the edge jumps is in the lutz corner I really have no where to jump. And it would be fine and all if once and a while people actually moved and let me do a jump no one has Ettiquite. No one ever moves. To any normal direction skaters, or anyone really, take turns if you and someone else is trying to jump in the same spot, maybe good once and then let them go once and repeat but of the don't budge and don't try to share the space with you move somewhere else.
