Awsome catch Tyson👍👌
Thanks my friend
My first memory of Banff National Park 28 years ago, was of parking right by (what I later found out was) Morant’s Curve to photograph the mountains only to be assailed by (again, what I now know to be) 3 SD 40-2s at the head of 80 tank cars with 2 more SDs half way through. So the impression it left was indelible, bright headlights, those thunderous 16-645 engines, and that ghostly hooter, but above all, that hooter, with that eerie tailing off sound that echoed around. I’d listen out for it wherever I was between Banff and Revelstoke. Such a distinctive accent to these locomotives. It made me come back to Canada again and again to see them. They are/were incomparable in my book, especially when they’d idle out of Field towards the big hill, with that totally understated ‘Ying ying ying’ sound and brake valves popping and hissing and then the engineer would open them up for that climb. Mightily impressive especially when you’re not expecting the wall of sound that thuds through the air towards you. Back then I just wanted to grunt like Tim the tool man Taylor, if anyone remembers that. Just thought I’d share. Amazing engines, and I miss them. I understand now why my father missed the steam engines of his youth.
That's an incredible experience you have, I absolutely love these engines and their eerie horns and sounds in the mountains, thanks for the great comment I appreciate it.
