    The best use of filler episodes ever. It's so cool that the theme of this is that Steven is meant to save everyone, and then realizes that the happily ever after never really came. He repressed all of this build up of trauma and saving he alone had to do for everyone around him just because he was unlucky enough to have his mothers gem. She wasn't bad either, it's just frustrating that he has to deal with what she started, and had to be there in it's core from start to finish instead of being a human kid who enjoyed life..hence why he goes to college at the end.

    I related a lot to Steven this season. I helped raise my siblings, went to war, and was lost when all was said and done. I felt if I wasn't useful to anyone, I was a waste of life. From the beginning of the season, I recognized what he was going through. The desire for a semblance of normality with others you love, without endless shame. The sadness circlejerk at the end was peak awful, though. I didn't enjoy the message left for anyone like him.

      So you’re saying you related to the series, the way Steven felt from the beginning till the end, but you’re saying you didn’t like the ending right? I think the show did an amazing job at closing Steven Universe’s universe. Steven Universe Future was my favorite season, more than the first five Steven Universe, even though the beginning felt like filler I’m pretty sure that for someone who has gone through a similar experience would understand the need for those moments in the beginning. I honestly liked the ending, don’t get me wrong, saying a hug fixes everything is wrong, but they didn’t try to say that, the hug was just a representation of their love for him, he felt like they didn’t need him anymore, and he felt that if he was useless then he had no purpose, and he thought of himself as a monster for not being able to cope with his trauma, but when they hugged, it screamed at him saying, “we love you unconditionally” that didn’t fix anything though, afterwards he started going to therapy, and went to go find himself. Even though I liked the ending, I still believe though that we have our own right to like or dislike the series, but we gotta remember that it’s not about us, this is what Rebecca Sugar wanted, and it’s her show, so we should be thankful and not criticize her.

    I don't know man, alot of the problems you see in this aren't really problems, they're really just irks I guess. For example, steven growing a beard is kind of directly tied to his he feels mentally. In one episode back, his body changed because of how he felt how old he was. He felt he was growing during his training with jasper, that's most likely why he started to look older. And him "shaving" is due to him reverting back to his younger self because he's shouldering yet again, alot of guilt. I just rewatched the entire show, it's pretty easy to catch on to alot of things when you remember it like the back of your hand.

      Yeah! And the “he randomly projected his dream on the TV!? Random new power bad” like its the combination of 2 different concepts! 1) gems can alter TV signals, we see that with lapis in S1 and peridot in S2. We even see a similarity in the diamond fight/garnets wedding where steven like projected into the gem state or wtvr and said “we’re family” 2)Stevens mental state affects his powers. From when he felt old and he became old, when greg lied about his leg healing and steven was no longer confident and then couldn’t heal for a time. So when you combine those, it means bad feelings get projected onto the tv! Hell even in the og show pearl projected her dreams into a hologram! It takes remembering the bare minimum of the show to understand that lmao

      and that's why i love the hug thing because the whole corrupted steven thing is just a massive mental breakdown from all the built up stress from his life and the hug doesn't cure him 100% it just helps him calm down and realize that he ISNT okay. he even mentions how he goes to therapy in the final episode

  • @xantheburns-price1929
    @xantheburns-price1929 Před rokem +107

    He says there isn't an overarching plot but there actually is in most episodes:
    In the second one he tries to help everyone but fails, which causes him to think he is losing his ability to resolve everything and makes him rethink his purpose
    The roller rink portrays his inability to make real human friends and makes him realise that he isn't like a normal human at all and can't relate to them, cutting off a part of himself
    Cactus Steven shows him losing his friends and having a fear of losing new ones, so he starts planting but makes a living plant which he confines that he is losing faith in the people but it says it to those people and forces him to face his trauma
    Overall there is an actual overarching plot but instead of making it blatantly obvious there is one, it makes it way more subtle, each episode sneakily slipping in signs of different trauma and PTSD, and it also uses things that he learnt in his childhood to emphasize this. He rarely ever used to help himself and only helped others, that being his goal throughout all his time, but when there is no one to help he has no goal, and starts to feel empty, and the show shows that in different ways as he realizes he can't help people and starts to have his childhood trauma start making this sense of despair much worse, and this starts slowly effecting his mental and ( I think that the body swelling and stuff is actually representing when you are having a negative impact on your body) physical health, and no one around him helps, and some make it worse, which leads to him feeling alone and like he can't confinde in anyone which makes him feel even more depressed. And this is really shown as he begins to lose faith in the people around him and he begins to isolate himself, Cactus Steven emphasizes his fear of confindeing which is honestly just sad as he keeps all this stress and loneliness bottled up.
    Gosh, sorry I made this into an essay without even going into the ending episodes and saying about them, it was supposed to be short but I got carried away :-)

    @RefluxCitadelRevelations Před 2 měsíci +22

    The plot of the show is to clearly be a more adult and serious look on the effects of trauma and the ways that it hides in your mind and body. Steven's growths are a subconscious aspect of his trauma showing through his body. The show is attempting to use character, and character design in order to show the dangers of trauma and what it can do to a person if left unchecked. Steven shattering Jasper is something that is fixable because it demonstrates the idea that people with trauma will mask their negative behavior, whether that's self-destructive or harmful to others, with righting their wrongs as they make them before anyone can see the true damage they're doing to themselves or others. If there is an aspect of this series you don't understand as to why the creators did what they did, the most likely reason is to show character. Why does Steven think that proposing to Connie? Because he's insecure about who he is, so he relies on someone else to do the heavy lifting. This is a pretty common tactic among people in general, not just those with ptsd or mental illnesses. The way Connie's mother talks about trauma is one of the most accurate and realistic portraits I have seen. And there is probably better, but when she talks about how Steven's body is reacting to minor circumstances as if it's the end of thr world - I personally really connected with that. I saw myself in that phrasing. It's brilliant they were able to take such an extreme topic and display it in a way that makes it for anyone of any age an easy time to understand.

      +Tiktoktree-It's pretty clear the writers don't like Jasper very much and probably only brought her back because the fans were begging for it. And honestly, I didn't want Jasper to get the FRIENDSHIP treatment but how she was handled wasn't that stellar either. She's still angry all the time, and they don't really do anything with that. You get the implication that she's lost, confused, doesn't know what to do anymore now that she knows that Pink Diamond is Rose. Her creator, her "mother" is her greatest enemy and caused her greatest suffering. All the pain she ever suffered through. And with The Diamonds dismantling the Empire, Jasper is no longer required to be the "perfect Quartz" solider either. So what can she do? Who can she be now?
      And the show doesn't really do anything with that. At all. Steven's way of approaching her and trying to help her is to. .. feed into her nasty temper. . .Okay. . .Why? Steven taking lessons from Jasper has potential but they never do anything with it. And she makes him so mad that he straight up kills her. . .And when he magically revives her back to life, she develops Stockholms and swears absolute loyalty to "her Diamond."
      And that's the last you see of her until the last episode. It's IMPLIED she got better, off screen, because she's at Little Homeworld now. When at the beginning of the season, she refused to live among the other Gems and wanted to be by herself. And when Steven tells her he's leaving, she gets so upset that she knocks a hole in the wall. So she will miss him. But given that the last time Steven saw her, he straight up killed her, you can't see anything but a disturbing Stockholms where she wants to please Steven and do whatever he wants.
      Steven was the one who asked her to come join Little Homeworld. And there's no indication she came there for any reason other than because it's what Steven wanted. She swears undying fealty to him and telling her that he's leaving is only going to upend and traumatize her even more. And she's proven to be so violent, unstable, and unable to live with others that there's no indication she's not a constant danger to all the Gems around her. He just leaves and expects the Crystal Gems to pick up the mess.

      OK I agree with you mostly. But Greg is far from a deadbeat. Why do you think he lives in a van most of the series? quite literally most of the money he makes from his car washing job pays for Steven's house and bills. And courts aren't forcing him to do that he does so because he wants to. The reason why he does not live with Steven is because he's partially afraid of him and partially afraid of the crystal gems. Plus he had lived by a parenting philosophy of not wanting To be in your kids face all the time. That being said he lives just down the street from Steven and they hang out all the time. In fact Greg is probably Stevens closest human friend. Sorry to go off on a tangent but after all the Peter Griffin's and Homer Simpson's Stan Smiths and Hank Hills, Greg is so refreshing as one of the only cartoon dads I've ever seen that is actually a good father even if he doesn't have his life together.

      @PlanetZoidstar Před rokem +38

      @@dreamt0wn739 Thing is, Steven did mistreat Connie in Future. He tried to pressure her into marrying him out of the blue, and when he didn't get the answer he felt entitled to he threw a pity party and Garnet had to comfort him. That's toxic entitled behaviour to expect the person you care about will just say "yes" and then having a hissy fit when they say "no". Then when she shows up and is clearly worried that he's having a meltdown, he screams in her face for her to leave. I've had emotional breakdowns before but I never let that make me scream in the faces of the people I care about and care about me. The fact Steven never apologises for that is especially toxic and it's never brought up again.
      It's okay to be angry, but it's not okay to take that anger out on other people. You are allowed to have moments of weakness, vulnerability and stress, but the moment you start taking it out on the people around you, you're the problem. It doesn't help that this all started when Steven tried to pressure Connie into marrying him and her turning him down is part of why he breaks down later at the hospital.
      I am sorry that you've had to deal with similarly stressful and anxious times before, but it seems you're just trying to justify that it's okay to use that as an excuse to hurt people. That you are not ultimately responsible for how you process your problems or who you lash out at because of them. You take issue with Connie feeling betrayed and leaving, but when it's Steven who is feeling hurt, suddenly he's innocent in all of this.
      Connie never meant to hurt Steven by rejecting his proposal, she was 14 and clearly far too young for such a commitment. Depending on where Beach City is, Steven was likely too young, and you need parental consent regardless. It was a dumb idea born from his selfish entitlement and fear of her going away, he wanted to shackle himself to Connie at all times and take away her right to privacy. That is what makes his meltdown later toxic.

    It would have been better if the season would be mainly about Spinel. Like after she was taken by the diamonds, they should have shown how Spinel was trying to adjust right after what she did to Steven and his friends and his planet. For example at episode one, Spinel
    struggles on having a short temper and gets mad at the diamonds for not having time to play with her or reminding her about pink, much like that. Then on episode two, she calls Steven for help so that he could help her to control her emotions and apologize to the diamonds, and the end of the first plot. Then on episode three, there would be an antagonist whether it would be
    Black diamond or Red diamond or Emerald etc, who was just selfish and greedy for power like most villains does and so on.
    Hope you like my idea after I recently rewatched the movie and repeat to the point when Spinel showed up then skip the
    Cringy parts and only watched the scene of her and her song especially the drift away that I listened overnight.
    And Spinel should always appear in all episodes without absences like in season 6 or Future. Where there's only two episodes that Spinel appeared.

So I found it hauntingly perfect the way it played out because Steven already started to blame Greg, but this just adds fuel to the already burning fire.

If you take it as a human level of growth then it might be possible with the powers (for example: blue diamonds clouds) to account. I liked Steven Universe Future . I think there was a lot of meaningful plot. Yes, there was no outright globe-threatening danger Steven and the Crystal Gems have band together against, instead, I think the show was a lot more psychological as Steven deals with the trauma of his childhood. You can see this in the opening sequence - white diamond is shown as more open and happy, yet her specter still haunts the intro. Each of the episodes address trauma in some way, sometimes taking multiple episodes to express the ramifications of the arc. For example, episode 4 deals with "Volleyball's" literal trauma due to the violence she experienced with Pink Diamond manifested in a wound on her face. As Steven and Pearl help "Volleyball," not only does Pearl and Volleyball reconcile some of their hardships with Pink, but Steven heals some of the complex relationship he has with his mother, Rose. With Greg, we see his own trauma considering the way his parents raised him and his subsequent inability to discipline Steven in episode 15--- his eyes strained in his optimistic, carefree parenting as the sound of the episode drowns out with Steven feeling stuck with the knowledge that his father is unable to help him.
    I think they even addressed this in the show. At one point, somebody (i forget who) gives the advice that you need conflict in order to keep a story going. The show obviously doesn't do this, and instead turns to a new mode of storytelling, something which might bore viewers.
    I didn't really like Steven Universe Future's depiction of Homeworld, yet I think this was purposeful. There's a flattening of all the characters in Homeworld, including Spinel, because they're not really his family, but instead are Pink's. Additionally, White's confession is laughably bad, because Rebecca wants us to know White is not redeemed. The diamonds' existence in Steven's life, while technically his family, are like the distant inlaws trying to make a change but not really well liked still due to the aura of bs they've spouted, and are really more abstractly tied to his mom than Steven.
    And the show has a great solution to the intense episodes long buildup of Steven's inner monster. Instead of a 10 second hug solving all of his problems, Steven has to get away from beach city and start his new (young adult) life. He turns away from the epicenter of his past, and his mom's past, and all the Crystal Gems' past, and looks toward the future.
    Thankyou for the video. It's really well made got me thinking about the show, so thankyou.

He was barely around and didn't even know the danger that steven was getting into until like the end of season 2 or season 3. As someone who seriously relates to Spinel’s struggles and views and such, the ending of the movie was so wonderful. It made me feel like it’s ok that I’m not always stable, and that even if I’m not perfect I’m deserving of love. Spinel’s appearance in Steven Universe Future was like a slap to the face. It was so invalidating because all her development at the end of the movie was just *thrown away.*

    • @ryancarson6962
      @ryancarson6962 Před 3 lety +8

      Eris Cook How was her development “thrown away”? She was only acting the way she did in the movie because she was basically lashing out at whatever she could, and by the end of the movie she basically gotten what she actually wanted, which was affection and loyal companionship, since the Diamonds basically adopt her. So why *WOULDN’T* she act the way she does in Future? She never actually hated being the friendly goofball she was before, in fact she has hinted numerous times throughout the movie that she hated the way she was acting, so it was clear that what she wanted in the end was to have fun with others again instead of being a broken lunatic that wants to destroy everything. Which is a desire that’s *fulfilled now.* Unlike Pink, the Diamonds show no signs of wanting to discard her so she has what she wants. And while she triggered Steven that’s not because she’s “stupid” or out of character. He asked her how she stopped being vengeful and she responds by singing back his advice about making a change, basically communicating that his advice helped her, which annoyed him but she didn’t realize that because she lacks social skills and grace in that area, something the movie had shown repeatedly to have issues with, I mean she literally invaded Steven’s personal space and was shown to be rather clingy. And what happened wasn’t even her fault, he’s not in a good place right now and by this point all of the Diamonds have unintentionally triggered him in some way, but Steven isn’t really communicating what he is going through so obviously they aren’t going to magically understand what he needs right now. They don’t know how to handle this situation. And it’s likely that she did learn from what happened with Pink and isn’t as gullible as she was before, but there’s obviously not much ways to show that since, again, she has companions who enjoy her company now and won’t discard her on a whim. Her development wasn’t thrown away, you just didn’t understand her character.

    • @pipperminty
      @pipperminty Před 3 lety +18

      Ryan Carson Spinel is heavily BPD coded, and clearly severely traumatized. I know from experience those things aren’t something you can just get over in a couple months or even a couple of years. No matter what desire has been fulfilled, the trauma and disorder are still there. It’s honestly kind of insulting that it’s played off as Spinel just being a clingy and toxic person who magically gets better the moment she get love. The abandonment issues never leave. The anger never leaves. The constant need to push others away before they hurt you never leaves. People with *severe* mental illnesses like BPD, or even trauma can’t always control the way they act, and they certainly can’t control the way they feel. Serious therapy is needed. The reason a lot of people relate to her is because of that. She didn’t instantly get better at the end of the movie just like I will never fully recover. It hurt to have that stripped away.

    Seriously, I know this is stupid, but part of me had a theory that when Steven left at the end of home world bound, he wanted to go somewhere to just be alone. And he would need to pick a place that no one really knew about. A far away place that no one would think to look for him at. And once he left his sandal at home world, I took this as hope that my theory would come true. I felt like the diamonds would go to Earth sooner and ask the gems where Steven was. Together, they would brainstorm something like
    “He’d want to go someplace where he can be alone. A place where no one would think to come to.”
    And then Spinel would realize where he was and say to everyone that she thinks she knows where he is. Then the diamonds would offer to go with her and she would quietly say that she has to do this alone. And then, she would take the warp to the garden. Once she got there, she would experience a mixture of emotions, almost wanting to turn back as the trauma returns to her. But then, (and this would be a great moment to show her character development of not only moving on but also letting things go which is completely unlike how she started ((being the clingiest gem I can think of)), she would remember that she was free from all of that trauma thanks to Steven. And she would inhale and then walk around until she found steven crying. Spinel would say his name out loud. Steven would look up at her, mostly sad but also surprised that she came for him, even tho this was the last place that she wanted to be. And together, they would talk and figure the rest out together. This would be a much better storyline because not only does it give Spinel massive character development, but it also would be a great follow up to the movie so at least 1 episode of the series would be worth the wait to watch.
    Thank you if you’ve read all this :)

    For me, Steven Universe Future was a perfect way to end the whole series. In the 5 sezons and in the movie, Steven only helped others. No one ever cared about him, and it was burning inside of him, until it bursted out. You'r main problem is that there is no plot in the last sezon. But there is. In every episode, we see that Steven is breaking more and more, and that no one sees it, because he never even showed that he needs some help with his trauma. And when it comes to the finale, I personaly felt so satisfied with an ending like this for the first time. I know it might sound stupid, but I know that when you never felt that anyone can help you and care about your problems even a stupid hug can make you feel better. When it comes to the fact that his dad told him that he is proud of him, I can see why he did it. He said something he would wish to hear in a moment like this. I agree that Spinel was badly shown in there, like there would be no trauma left in her, but I suppouse that to achieve an ending like they wanted, there had to be a plot hole like this.
