The BEST Barter? a skillset that people will need badly.
That’s why I learned how to make moonshine.
@@Syko_Gaming5150 hahahaha That's not exactly what I had in mind but it is certainly a valuable skillset in WROL.
If they need your skill they can’t kill you and take it.
Not Only a "skill set" but the Ability and Tools to preform said "skill set".
I'm a mechanical draftsman. Manual, not CAD. So is my roommate, professionally. We have a lot of books and plans on 19th century and earlier mechanical systems, plus books on chemistry from that era and earlier. We have a few cases of paper, our drawing boards, and a stock of pencils. I have an old manual typewriter and ribbons and carbons. I'm not a printing press, but I can reproduce small scale. That becomes useful.
Let me see here. No ammo, no guns, no TP, no reloading supplies, but the liquor stores never ran dry even though sales went up 300%....... Food for thought....
A lot of bullet shortages are because there are 9 million new gun owners that need to stock up. That and the fact that shortages are causing people to panuc buy, like with toilet paper.
Colion Noir just made a video where he asked an ammo manufacturer about it.
@DonaldJ So, buy rat traps?
I just thought of this - Fishing Hooks and some Fishing Line - portioned out for trade would make a good barter item in a survival situation.
And mini sewing/mending kits and services.
If you have any old prescription bottles especially the bigger ones, you can make mini fishing kits with them, just peel off the label. Put some hooks, a small sinker or float, some line around some something, maybe a small piece of cardboard, and maybe a fly or worm in with it if you want. All they need is a pole of some kind and they can fish.
Here is it easy tip learn how to make trade items knives clothing soap because if we go back to the dark ages these things will be the only thing that will be worth jack s*** and learn how to build primitive shelters and to live as a community and to continue to move on and forward because you will not be in one spot too long be nomadic
Keep small tins from like altoid mints and you can make mini fishing kits, mini first aid kits, etc.with just a few other items .
You can also get single serving instant coffee for bartering too and that's something that you can get at dollar tree. You can also get sewing kits, eye glass repair kits, hygiene products at dollar tree too.
Yes. Instant stores a lot longer too.
I bought those coffee sachets for barter.
Nicotine, Alcohol, Drugs, & Ammo probably be the best currency in a SHTF situation
oh yea, just what the police love.
Coffee and doughnuts also
The cops will get em. Yes they will. Rape, and pillage
No ammo,
I don't think so. They people that want those items won't have anything you want in exchange. Trading Ammo or firearms is risky since they can easily be used against you.
Even when the Bic lighter fuel runs out a fire can be started with the spark from the empty cartridge.
The term "shot glass" was from trading a bullet for a "shot" of whiskey. Yep.
Thank you for the information.
At current markets that's not far off in the near future.
I've seen people who are willing willing to barter or buy a mag worth of ammo for almost around $30 bucks for 9mm, about the same for 5.56. 9mm JHP is probably a shot.
@DonaldJ Of course life is more than violence and guns. However that still is a reality of the world we live in. I believe we should have a very positive mindset and motivation for our community and our families. Survival/preparedness is not only way of thinking, it is a want to protect, provide and support your family and community. I don't know where you got the kill or be killed attitude about a shot glass and current ammo prices, to make that jump is a pretty big stretch. I pray I never have to use violence to protect the people I love, my self or anyone else. I'm very surprised that you take from my comment or the preparedness community as a whole that "kill or be killed" is even close to the frame of mind most people are in. I'm with you on respecting nature, its resources, and it's power. I've spend many days in very austere conditions in all 4 seasons in the woods. I know you cannot fight mother nature, you must respect it and understand it or you will not make it out alive. Every year many people don't.
I'm still trying to see where you got violence and kill or be killed" from ammo prices.
I do believe that if you outsource your protection that puts you at a risk, just because you don't have mean harm to anyone else doesn't mean that they will not harm you or someone you love. This is become increasingly more true in major cities across the US, and that's not law abiding gun owners. I can tell you I personally know a lot of people who are firearms owners and they NEVER want to use force against another person. You keep a fire extinguisher in your house, and buckle your seatbelt when you drive. Surely not because you want a fire or plan to crash but because you would rather have it and never need it and need it and not have it. For me and most other firearms owners (Men and Women) we enjoy target shooting, it's a fun hobby that takes skill, awareness, motivation, and respect for the tool you're handling. This is as true with a knife as it is with a gun, car, or camp fire. Don't respect it's power and you will get yourself hurt. This goes for power tools to hand tools, along with the countless other things.
@DonaldJHow did you get to people "fearing life" from a shot glass comment? Or ammo prices?
You're saying absolutely nothing related to what I said. Do I wish there wasn't violent people in this world? Absolutely 100%, but it's not reality. I've seen and know of heinous crimes committed against people who did nothing but try to live their lives in peace. In their communities they had something riped away from them, safety and security. Which can make people hate the world but they don't. These are people who still manage to find fulfillment in life and move past the senseless attacks against them. While others have not and struggle daily or even lost their struggle. Someone else did that to them and they had no say in the matter.
You have a great day. I wish you all the best in your journey in life.

Okay, don’t laugh but my barter item is yarn. I’ve got lots of yarn. You can weave, knit, crochet and even embroider with it. You can make clothing, blankets, and stuffed toys. Very versatile.
That's actually pretty smart. Reminds me of one of the smarter people on the show Doomsday Preppers, who had big spools of yarn that she had for trading purposes.
Agree, Esp in the very long term ...... and well made items can be repurposed esp as children grow. Sock yarn is also in my haul, as well as the needles and hooks. I am a bit saddened that many of the young women who have recently had or are pregnant that I know, are not interested or do not see the sense in learning the skill of knitting and crochet. They don't seem to figure we are heading into the deepest recession ever and these two skills and sewing, will save then an absolute fortune and could even earn them dough / be a skill to barter with, esp if they can do repairs ...... I'm also learning to spin, as most of the yarn that comes into UK comes from either Turkey or China, but here in the UK, we do have plenty of good grazing for sheep, and plenty of sheep. Sheep, = yarn, milk, cheese, meat, lard & tallow, tallow for candle making, very versatile sheep. Zips are another item to stash, not many items of clothing don't have a zip somewhere ...... so are buttons, however buttons are easier to make than zips.
Years ago when I was in the Army, I remember driving through war torn Bosnia, and seeing an older lady sat in the sun on top of a bombed out building, with no roof, with a toddler watching her, she was sat with a couple of sacks of fleece and a spinning wheel, spinning. It gets pretty cold in Bosnia like -36deg C, diesel freezes. So warmth is pretty important.
Some sheep or goats would be a good thing. Wool, meat, and milk.
Better to have rolls of cloth and some good sewing supplies. This way you can repair clothes with holes in them. Issue if there is a crisis when bartering becomes the only option, I don't think anyone will have time to knit. Most of the awaken hours will be needed for food production, harvesting wood for heat\cooking, cleaning, repair, etc. You can patch a pair of jeans. jackets, gloves with cotton cloth in a fraction of the time it takes to knit something new. You can also make new items faster with cloth than yarn.
Not good in the first weeks .. but after few months or year or so.. Yea good item.. thing is some barter items will be good immediately some may be better down the line..But still a good item. 👍
Individual bartering could make you a target. You would have a hard time sleeping with one eye open after a while. Being known as 'prepped up' could be a self imposed death sentence.
My intention is to only barter as part of a tight, well armed group of men.
Wise indeed!
Trust no one.
I agree. Bartering I think could be very dangerous. Once they know you have extra. Bartering is over, they just come and get it probably with a group of friends.
Generally bartering will take two forms - trading directly with your neighbors because you or your neighbor has a need. Bartering out of need puts you in a disadvantaged position, and thus you only want to do that with people you trust. The fact that they are a neighbor you live near keeps you from ripping them off (and vice versa). The "trust" is a key part of the trade itself, and thus you have far less to worry about when it comes to safety. If they are, say, trading you ammo for food (because your position is strong and while you don't need ammo, it is a good storage of value), and because you know they are hungry you give them more than agreed to in the trade as a neighbor, they are going to be HIGHLY unlikely to target you. They would be far more likely to target outsiders to get things to trade you for more food.
The second form will be general barter - as market places will spring up (often around schools, churches, and other places that will accumulate people). This will include those with real needs who are desperate to trade with strangers (and get ripped off) from necessity (and they can be dangerous), criminals (because there is a concentration of value to bring them in), and people trading out of their excess (merchants, of a sort). If you are well prepared, then you would be in that third camp. You have a good hunt and kill 6 deer at once, you have a good crop and have tons of produce to trade, etc - so, you are looking to trade out what you have for durable value, or you have a particular need that you are looking for.
In a general barter place, you are at the most risk in the coming and going, so show up very early in the morning. That also lets you take the first look at permanent "stalls" as well as be there for those also looking to be the first at "fresh" goods. Make honest deals quickly, leave by a different route and circle round (to avoid any who might follow you), and avoid the main roads in or out within a close distance of the market (the most likely "ambush points"). This would also be the time to be fully armed and not alone.
Likewise, don't carry more than you think you can trade in short order. Know your place in the world. You have a truck load of pumpkins you are driving in? You could spend DAYS trading those off, especially since everyone else has pumpkins coming in at the same time of year (and no one really likes eating pumpkin, which is why we make them into pies). You would be better off trading that load off quickly to an established trader for less and let that person reap the greater profits over time so that you can get in and out and back to your home and farm.
Careful who you barter with. You might pick the wrong person
Learn to grow your own food. Learn to save the seeds from your vegetables to be self sufficient.
Make sure that they are heirloom or open pollinated, then they will re grow true to the original plant.
Learn wich plants you can eat and are medicinal, way better then grow food in a monoculture (only one of the same species in a small space) so a food forest would be better. But there are a lot of weeds you could eat and are medicinal, so on the side road you could eat and heal!!

I’ve done it all my life there are still villages in Peru that only use the barter system and the way that we are going with a cashless society it might be a make a comeback. 🙏🏼
I’d love a video on how to make bartering really work. For instance, clearly it’s fundamental to know the worth of what you are offering and what you are trading for.
Payment in salt is also where the term SALARY comes from.
Because salary is good with salt on it.
looks like he hasn't been saving that Southern Comfort for "bartering"
I've been using this prepping system for years and it has served me well.
Every week of every Month spending $20 on prepping is easy.
Week #1 Buy shelf stable foods or long term dry goods like rice, beans etc. Canned, dried or freeze dried meats and fruits. Bottled water, electrolyte mix and a means to filter water.
Week #2 Buy medical supplies like over the counter medicines, antibiotics, wound care items, rubbing alcohol, other alcohols like whiskey, high proof vodka, bourbon, dried natural herbs, essential oils, hygiene and comfort items to stay healthy.
Week #3 Ammo, Firearm accessories like magazines, gun oil, gun solvents for cleaning, sights/scopes, holsters/slings, cutting tools and other weapons. (If you are needing a firearm or two I would save up the money for every third week along with any other available funds until you have enough money to buy what you want.)
Week #4 This is the miscellaneous week to buy other items like flashlights, fuel cans, batteries, solar panels, reading materials for various types of skillsets, handheld radios, etc.
Women's personal hygiene items too.
Bea Happy ? learn how to make your own like your great gradma did, maybe? after shft, it will be a route of NO return to the normal we once knew imo.

Something to add. Safety razors. Shaving kits. Hair cut alternatives. Combs. Hair ties.

Gold and silver is so high right now it’s unbelievable! I would say skill sets that you can provide would be good amongst other items.
Don't forget your sewing kits they will come in very handy during a SHTF scenerio

Goya good
My barter list so far
1. 50ml liquor (little bottles)
2. Baby wipes
3. Female pads
4. Heirloom seeds
5. Coffee
6. Water
7. Ammo (would only trade if really needed for something hard to get like medication for family)
8. Soap
baby wipes expire... so do seeds....
SP, your videos, like this one, are informative and fantastic. Tons of value. I can't understand why ANYONE would give you a dislike. You really know your stuff and I am going through my go bag as I am watching several of your videos. You are an inspiration to the rest of us.
BIC lighters you can buy a bulk 50 of them for a little less than a dollar a piece. Also Liquid soap, save the little liquid hand rubbing alcohol containers and reuse them for liquid soap bottles.
I have to say, you have a great channel. Thank you for all the great information.
Eye glass repair kits and reading glasses would be very good barter items. They don't take up a lot of room and many people need them, including me.

Alcohol, is antiseptic, great for trading and of course… 🥃

I like the way you think. I keep a pint of whiskey in my bug-out for just these reasons.
100 proof vodka. I dont use isopropol anymore...just 100 proof. It even works better for me
Yes I've been getting both alcohol and wine. I make sure it's in glass bottles. I'm not sure how much leaching will occur with plastic.
I've started making multiple types of extracts with alcohol. Good for barter and for food fatigue. Vanilla in spiced rum is amazing
@DonaldJ yeah but they dry up over time LOL !
I've been pushing friends to get some silver. This spending is putting the final blow in the the dollar.
Soon it’s gonna be worth less than the paper it’s printed on!
The issue I have with gold and silver in shtf not many people will want to barter for it yes we've bartered and used it a currency for hundreds of years but this age is different maybe once an economy is re-established

I'm thinking about a little silver. Everything may crash but you know know the government will still want taxes
Also,women's feminine pads forany bleeding situations,gauze, bandages,3A ung,diarrhea meds.
10 or 12 years ago I bought 4 cases of empty half pint bottles and filled half with cheap vodka and half with cheap whiskey. Now I have 96 bottles of each for trading. This reminds me; I'd better check and see if there has been any evaporation. It's been several years since I last looked.
Don't check every bottle 😁
Please update. Alcohol is my plan too.
great idea!!! buy large bottles of cheap stuff and have smaller bottles to fill up and barter with.... that will keep the alcohol fresh until you need to start bartering. I am going to do this.

Another good vídeo, thanks for the ideas, it is true, anything from a good pair of socks to the skill to sharpen blades and knives are precious tools at our favor
Instant coffee, small bottles of alcohol and tobacco. I think trading will be a big thing when crap hits the fan. My mother just got lucky if silver is going to be a hot idem. She just inherited 20lbs. Of silver coins. Real silver old coins. Great ideas!
Lantern Mantles,Perimeter Alarms,Machetes,Axes,Decks of cards,Two cycle oil,USB lights cheap on eBay,Zip ties,Hose Clamps,Zippo flints wicks, buy a roll of oil lamp wick,Propane to butane adapters so you can refill any 1lb or butane can from bulk 20 lb tank...Mosqito nets for face and bed all somewhat easy to backpack around✌️
Solid list I would only add a few things.
I would add things to sharpen a knife, axe, etc. This allows you to barter an edge you have but for people who want to touch up an edge.
As for fire/lighters stocking spare flints (lighter that run out of gas) Zippo fluid, spare wicks and even cheap Zippos will have a long term barter value. Grabbing a few would be good for you and you can always trade them.
As for ammo, I would only ever trade to someone I personally know who is prepared and does not possibly present a danger of now having ammo for their firearms. Someone could go from having a firearm, but not ammo so not much of a threat. Now if you barter ammo you may have just armed someone who is now better equip to attack you or those you love. Just my personal opinion on ammo barter.
I would add sewing supplies, lots of thread in different weights, needles, patches, velcro, buttons and anything else. Make small kits to barter. Being able to repair clothes is extremely important.
Same with eye glass repair kits, waterproofing sprays, mink oil.
Last thing I would add for barter for be skills. Knowing basic repairs, and skills not known to many people. Be it fixing a motor, a radio, heater, and countless other skills like medicine, herbalist, and in a worst case scenario a mental health professional. Someone who can help spot the signs of dangerous depression, or even worsening symptoms. Dentist or veterinarian are people with a skill set that would be unbelievably helpful if you cracked a tooth, lost a filling, or had a fractured bone, needed stitches or other more skilled hands. Ideally a surgeon. But supplies and skills are very limited there
Love the video, informative and simple.

I would never trade guns and ammo, but only to family and good friend's.
They guy to trade ammo to is the guy trading meat.
The person who has some meat at the barter place is using that ammo on something other than robbing people and will be happy to make trades of meat for the means to acquire more meat.
we will need those items to fight off the roving clans of cannibal scavengers when the food shortage begins
Love your hat behind you
Awesome information thanks
Hey there,
great one as all the other ones ... but I'd like some additions if I may and only one thing I really disagree:
NEVER EVER TRADE AMMO OR GUNS if you don't know the other ones ...you don't want to have your stuff used against you.
if you are able to make dry fruits, vegetables and other things buy a dryer (if you can make power)
everybody wants some kind of alcohol ... I learned to make mead and cider ... much easier than high alc liquor (store yeast and other stuff you need)
learn how to hunt and how to prepare the meat ... even with a crossbow or bow if there is nothing else left.
just the knowledge how to do things is so much helpful if you have nothing left to trade with
STOCK UP ... but learn skills
I'm skeptical about bartering ammo and/or guns.
those are for fighting off the roving clans of cannibal scavengers, looters, and nosey democrats
@@commiesnzombies yep it's gonna be crazy
Long term, mad max level preps, my faves are cordage and wire goods like nails. Fishhooks. Sewing needles and pins. And of course, spooled wire (insulated and not) and things like rat traps.

Good advice here. Another thing you could possible barter would be fuel. If you have a way to store gasoline or diesel. Even firewood could be bartered.
Awesome content!
I actually did this during the pandemic. I got into a bad accident that I’m lucky to have walked away and stop the perp that caused it from evading the scene.
Flash forward a few months, I used some expended brass for 300BLK to get a contractor and his buddy to lug a very heavy safe upstairs and bolted into place. I purposely kept the expended brass for that specific purpose when I knew I wouldn’t have the time to get into reloading.
Bartering is an essential key to survival, no matter what the the scenario is.

You may already have a video that would work but I live in a college dorm and want to be prepared here. Last semester we lost power in a severe ice storm for around a week and my dorm is pretty old and got cold quick and was just stranded here. There are many other scenarios that I should be prepared for here also and thought it would be good to see your idea for a kit for this type situation.

Skill sets that have simple equipment and are often over looked. Like old fashioned manual laundry, and how to make soap for it. Im sure there's a lot of people willing to pay or barter to get laundry done, and clothing repaired. Like in the old west. Theyre busy with their own stuff, so a modest fee for someone to do that chore is preferable to having to do it yourself.
I remember when silver was currency that you could buy a gallon of gas or a loaf of bread for a silver quarter. It's about the same now for a silver quarter.

box of ammo 60.00 to 100.00

The problem with precious metals,or gems, to use as your barter is a hungry man cannot eat them or make them into a usable tool. Their only value is that it is a short term situation and what is without real value today will someday be worth something. In SHTF precious metals an gems are of the same value of Hummel figurines.
Consider traps for catching game, If things got really bad anything from rats to deer would be taken for food. So a spring rat trap can take rates, squirrels and perhaps even a rabbit. Just put a hole in the base so they can be anchored down and not dragged away by a trapped but not yet dead animal,
Flour yes and also baking soda, baking powder and yeast. Have some three by five cards with recipes for simple breads, biscuits and pancakes. Most people today do not know how to make them from scratch.
Real maple syrup, not the maple flavored syrup, and honey. Honey keeps forever and real maple syrup has a very long shelf life. Added to bread dough provides food for yeast to make bread. You can also bake bread and barter that.
Simple cold weather gear like long thermal underwear. Stocking caps. Gloves.
Shoes and boots seem like a large investment. Buy them at the Goodwill store to stock your goods. Same place for winter coats.
Yup, but my guess is that you never trade any of that stuff you are stocking up on. This is why barter is pointless.

If you have prepped right, you should be able to ride out a shtf scenario for a few years. The survivors will, at some point, revert to a monetary system the basis of which is precious metals. This is based upon centuries of history. Those with stacks will be in the best position coming out of shtf.

I found this item quite by accident: reading glasses. I have been wearing them for 30 years and have accumulated dozens of pairs. They don't go bad, won't take up much space, and will be hard to find if things really go south.
Having your own compost works well too as barter in rural communities. It’s good for being a good neighbor / contributor to your community. This builds the currency of social equity.
I’ll be buying liquor in small bottles. I think that may be easier to barter.
I do the same thing
I think 200ml size is best. Smaller is fine but cost to volume is a shocker
Cheaper to buy big bottles. Small ones are more expensive just put alcohol in a jar or start drinking mini bottles and save
Nice collection of boom sticks 💪🏼🇺🇸
That is just a poster actually.... 😳
Green screen.
Haven't heard of the Frontier water filter, SP, in what way is it better than the Life
Straw? Great list of items to use as barter for a SHTF situation. Thanks. :-D
I scored Campbell's chunky soups, today. $2.79 and not the nearly $8 from the last time I saw them. I'm not stateside, so they are thin on the ground here. I found life straws at kamapart, they were tossed down with the sale items. $3 each, I think.
I keep 40 bottles of wine on hand just for trade.
I keep beer on hand. I get the good German beer. Rotate the stock on a regular basis.
I always thought wine would keep for a hundred years but then read that wine usually doesn't keep that well. Do you just keep 40 bottles in a cool, dark corner or drink it and thus rotate the stock?
@@marcushoward6560 It gets rotated. It will keep for a few years. I don't drink personally, but I give it away threw out the year.
I got 26er’s of various whiskies and a few bottles of tequila. I also have marijuana that i rotate lol
Wine isn't as Hardy or versatile as spirits.
I gave a like as soon as you mentioned silver.
If there was some kind of market place where people brought their good to trade with other people , wouldn't there be lot of bandit gangs waiting on the roads to and from there to ambush anybody they thought was easy pickings ?
For long term I have green coffee beans that I can roast as needed stored in a mylar bag. I will not trade the beans but instead I would sell cups of coffee. I also have a box of instant stashed in a closet. I do not drink coffee after 5 that way my body will crash naturally around 11.
Love your gun rack, would love to have that here in Australia
You can. Take your country back! Reclaim your freedoms.
@@curt2742 I wish
Can't beat a good levergun or pump shotgun. Or even a single, like the Ruger model 1. Takes more skill.
@@jamiehess4211 maybe , but I would love a mini 14 or ak platform rifle
@@brendendyson8470 I hear you. Always thought FAL's were cool. Stout and sleek semis.
I keep axe heads around an old axe head at a yard sale super cheap it's not hard to make an axe handle in my wood shop they don't take up mutch space and it's something people will need.
My barter is my skillset and stockpile of weed, tobacco and whisky
