The more I watch these videos the more I realize how much I need a milling machine. With a lathe and milling machine there's really not much more to be had. I have a nice metal bandsaw and drill press but so much more can be done with a milling machine. Great video btw. Appreciate anyone that takes time out of their day to show their process and give us new ideas.

looking real good Stan. I can't think of running a lathe without a digital now.

Stan - When you started to lay out the parts for the cross-slide (~ 8:00), you started to point out the fit issues which have kept me from installing a DRO on my 12x36 Logan.
I'm frequently up as tight as I can go against the chuck as well as the issues with the short tailstock quill which you've pointed out. The scale and read-head simply require that the cross-slide be too far back from the chuck for many of the operations which I perform.
For now, I set up a dial indicator as best I can, and work from that.
    Cheers,
    Eric

Thanks Stan, I have had good luck with Dro-Pros units I have 4 of them in my shop and have never had any problems that wasn't self induced!!!!! and nothing that wasn't easily fixed. I did not go three axis on the lathes, but sometimes which I had. I did the same as you even after checking myself a couple of times, birthdays are hell on eyes, ears, and keeping things straight. Aloha

Keith Fenner did a similar install on his Rutland, using 3 axis scales and running auto oiling at the same time.

Hahaha... Stan.. You described so well to keep the Head and the Scale aligned with the marks.. and ... Oooops... Now the Crap screws has to come out that you can swap it around.. Maybe opportune time to replace with stainless cap head screws...

Great work. Enjoyed the series. Took some of the mystique out of the installation.

Are you going to have enough clearance for your compound to swing over the cheese head screws?Good video Stan. Need to do that to my Clausing-Colchester lathe.

They are already switched out to button head :)

Troll master indeed! Apart from the upside down scale that front wiper looks like it’s not much of good use showing that big gap😉

Whenever I finally get to build my shop, I will be putting these (DRO pros) on the mill and lathe. Would getting a 3 axis for the lathe and using the third on the tailstock quill be more useful than the compound? Is a third axis even worth bothering with versus just a 2 axis?

Did you see the x-axis I did on my atlas? Was that not a possibility? I know it's not on many lathes.

    • @ShadonHKW

I went and had a peek, pretty clever, but that would interfere with my taper attachment.

  • @OGZeroLyfe

Yeah, spotted it before the text came up. My anal retentive self would have pulled the carriage off and milled a flat on the front of it for that mount though.
