You have no idea how big the smile is on my face when I saw that you guys were reacting to Tales of Xillia 2, the first Tales of Xillia as well as this one holds a special place in my heart since it was my introduction to the Tales of series and I've been a fan ever since,
while I haven't played all of them except for Berseria and Arise I have watch playthroughs of all of them from the first one Tales of Phantasia all the way too Zestiria before playing the last two I just mentioned, and I have also watched the anime Tales of Zestiria X and absolutely enjoyed myself,
I hope that you guys watch all the openings for all of the Tales of games as well as the anime trust me you guys will love some of the story and Characters, I even cried at the ending of Tales of Xillia 2 and I'm pretty sure you will too if you watch it, so please if there's any new game series you two want to react too I defiantly recommend this as well as the Anime you will make a lot of fans of the series including myself very happy if you did anyway I hope you guys take my suggestion into consideration take care you two and have a lovely day.

The Tales games hold a special place in my heart.
Xillia and Xillia 2 are very good.
My very first JRPG was Tales of Symphonia.
If you want more Tales stuff to react to though, they have OVAs/movies that can be watched.

The Tales series are some of the most adult-themed-but-kid-like stories that you will see.
Each story ends in heartwarming tragedy. You’re heartbroken and encouraged. It’s an amazing mix and I would encourage you to play them or watch a walkthrough.

  • @SepticTank53

Great to see you two reacting to a tales of game. Wanted to explain some things:
The tales series are jrpg games, not fighting games. Like many other jrpgs, you go into battle with a party of members (Xillia 2 here and most if not all other tales games, party of 4). As you proceed through the game more characters get added to the party, beyond 4, and you mix and match however you like. With all that said, the combat can feel very fighting game-like. Depending the game, you'll have two attack buttons, one that can be a type of "arte" that doesn't consume tp (technical points) or does basic attacks, then the other that does a different type of "arte" that does consume tp. This system varies further then i explain it based on the game, but in general their is a combo system utilizing directional attacks and special moves. Then, some games have higher tiered artes that don't get assigned by a button, but have conditions and a way of activation.. and the highest form of these special artes is Mystic Artes, as you seen in this video, and they have a whole cutscene and such. I can't really remember when they started the name mystic artes, might've been symphonia, but for the most part ever game since has had mystic artes.
It would be especially interesting if ya'll decided to play through one of these games (i'd recommend Vesperia, personally). Aside from the combat system, every game except Arise differs from other jrpgs in that these are local multiplayer games. One of you would control everything outside of combat, but both of you could participate within combat. I recommend Vesperia for many reasons.. the story is extremely engaging, the combat is very fleshed out, and some games have some hurdles that can give the series a bad rep (couple examples, symphonia 1 doesn't have free run so the "3D" of battle is quite unforgiving and to a degree annoying, while Zestiria has some camera issues in battle due to them trying an in-place battle system that doesn't work too well in the game). The definitive edition of Vesperia has some VA issues (most newcomers don't seem to notice the changed VA for the new scenes added) but also some audio quality in the new skits is messy to say the least, but these are very momentary inconveniences that don't hinder gameplay or take away from the overall experience.
To briefly describe skits.. they are essentially optional dialogue that flesh out the characters and give some fun (and often comedic) interactions between the characters.. which brings me to a point. Opinion, maybe, but what has me as a longtime fan of the tales series is the combination of the combat system and how well-developed the characters are. I truly hope the two of you will take the chance to dive into Vesperia and experience the game, and maybe from their branch into the other tales games.

Oh this takes me back. Tales of Xillia 1 and 2 are one of the best Tales series games handsdown. It is also the last Tales game I played. The rest of the Tales series games are good too, don't get me wrong, but Xillia's battle system and how stylish it is, along with its awesome story makes them easily the best in my opinion. I still remember playing the old Tales game on PS1 back when they were having 2D linear battles, with all those cool Mystic Artes. Tales of Legendia is a disappointment due to lack of Mystic Artes in this game. Then it became 3D with Tales of the Abyss in PS2 and we finally got to run around the battlefield to avoid attacks that were usually unavoidable back in 2D like Meteor Storm. The thing about the Tales series games is that the final antagonists are usually not exactly villains, but rather people with different ideology from you and from their perspective they are doing good in their own way. The usually evil and ambitious villains are taken out early or mid game. Like in Abyss for example, the final villain sees himself as freeing the world from the confines of Fate or the Score. In the story, everything in the world is happening in a per-ordained and prophecised way, and there was no way for humans to fight it. However, he still decided to fight this fate, even if it meant erasing the old world and making a new one free of the confines of fate. There were like-minded people drawn to him and agreed with his plan of course, even if it meant their own demise in the new world.
Then there were a series of cool Tales games, and then finally we reach Xillia and Xillia 2 in this video. Xillia has better story in my opinion, but Xillia 2 built upon whatever was great in Xillia and made them better, by introducing a new protagonist that was briefly mentioned in Xillia, and also allowing you to use the previous series final antagonists. Not only did they keep the unique gimmicks and skills of the old crew in Xillia, the unique gimmick of the new protagonist is that he can switch weapons mid battle depending on the enemy he is facing. The sledgehammer for the heavily armoured enemies, twin pistols for the flying enemies and twin swords for the rest. Not only that but the new protagonist can even transform into a new form with limited time and with new moveset.
Tales series games are all classics. Truly up there for JRPGs in terms of story and gameplay like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.

The 'Merlin' guy is Lord Maxwell King of Spirits. He commands all other spirits, and rules over them. In the Tales series he is typically the most powerful out of all spirits, his signature attack is Meteor Storm. His story is hard to explain as it's heavily tied to the plot and would require you to play the game fully to understand.
The dapper old man is Rowen J. Ilbert, a powerful magic user called the conductor. He is extremely intelligent well versed in battle, and strategy. All characters in Xilia have a unique trait to that. Rowen's trait is that he can alter the functions of a spell in various ways. Rowen is indeed a gentlemen he works tirelessly to secure peace for all.

There's familiar faces on it, like Kratos, Nathan Drake, and Raiden (Metal Gear), and some characters you may not be as familiar with, like Sir Daniel Fortesque from Medievil, or Parappa the Rapper from... Parappa the Rapper.

I was about to request seeing if you would do a reaction on the tales series openings, particularly from the mothership titles, and seeing you do a reaction here, i 'd like to suggest it.
On a side note, the "merlin" character is named Maxwell, which like Cid from final fantasy, is a name given to various characters in the Tales series, commonly to a character who is known as the Lord of the Elemental spirits that can be summoned by the players in some titles. The "dapper" man is exclusive to Xillia and is named Rowen. In the first Xillia game, he was a butler whereas in Xillia 2, due to plot in the previous game, became a minister to a king.

also, for some lore without majorly spoiling stuff (you may decide to try and play these two games, who knows!) but yeah, you have spirit characters, human characters, characters from different dimensions, this game bounces all over. I will say that the "Merlin" guy you brought up is named Maxwell and is very powerful, also several of these mystic artes are from having the main character build up a relationship with the other characters allowing them to do a joint ultimate attack, and the reason why they sometimes repeated is either you're fighting them, a alternate timeline version of them, or in the case of the team ups you talk with your companions and discuss changing up the ultimate, either slightly changing the name or one of the ones I enjoyed thoroughly "Blessed arte the pink!" where it goes from purple to pink in a reference to the first game.
also, it's not like legend of Zelda. the naming conventions for the "tales of" games are... a little weird. but the character you're following in one is either a boy named Jude Mathis or a lady named Milla Maxwell. and the second game is following Ludger Kresnik.
last note these games are... all kinda very loosely connected to each other? not like "oh you need to play tales of Xillia to play tales of berseria!" buuut playing the other games will help you notice little Easter eggs.

  • @dagonofthedepths

I think Tales of Xillia 2 s actually the 15th game in the series. The series is really Tales of (insert name here). They tend to all deal with the problems with coexistence between different races but they are JRPGs which tends to be a 20 hour story about a plucky band of adventures saving the world. And the writers do craft worlds, so you run into the problem of having to explain all the places and mcguffins that make up that world. In Tales of Xillia 2 you got alternate dimensions, a dying world, evil corporations, and a super spirit that is holding everything together. I don't have the worlds to explain what's happening without writing a book or sounding like I'm having a stroke. 🤮
But all that info is introduced over 2 long games so it's not bad if your going through it.

The “Tales of” series is one of the longest running JRPG (Japanese Role-Playing Game) franchise you could ever find.
I think the most common ones I’ve seen are this, Symphonia, Vesperia, and Arise (mostly due to recency).
Haven’t gotten to play one, (just watching playthroughs), but the characters and the worlds look fun to dive into. And the gameplays I’ve seen are definitely fun to tinker around with.
