I've been playing fiddle for 30+ years, but mostly traditional Irish music, New England contra, etc. Never liked the way I played old time music because it never sounded like old time music. This is a complete game-changer!! Never too old to learn new tricks :) thank you!
Hey Fiddlehed!
THANK you ever so much for all the new tips and tricks. You are an amazing, gifted, wonderful teacher of ALL teachers! You're the Best teacher, EVOH!!
We want to let you know how much we appreciate all the hard work you put into creating these incredibly unique videos for us. Your teaching style is truly exceptional, light years above and beyond other tutors,
and your genuine kindness, humility, and sincerity shine through in every video.
You teach like you WANT us to learn. You make your lessons 101. YAY!! You're always mindful that some of us are learning.
We humbly, graciously, kindly inquire if we may propose a teeny tiny request, though - do you think you could encourage us in a slightly different way?
We recently watched a video where the teacher mentioned that using phrases like "it is hard, very hard" can make students feel tense, anxious, and fearful, hindering their ability to improve. Instead, will you consider framing challenges as "advanced but achievable"? We believe this change in perspective will really help all of us trying to master these techniques. We are incredibly grateful for all you do, and we hope you know how much we admire, respect, and appreciate you. Thanks a quadrillion million! Appreciate you! Keep up the fantastic work! WE. LOVE. YOU! Be blessed. 🤗 ❤
Fiddlehed is easily the most underrated youtube channel. Keep on doing what you're doing fiddlehed
Thanks for the kind words. j.
I thought the same when I discovered this channel couple days back. There are so many people on CZcams famous for nothing
Yeah you've basically done everything and then improved on it 😊👌
You have a really captivating Rami Malek vibe and I am here for it.
I don't know who that is, but I'm taking it as a compliment! Thank you!
Hey Jason, as usual since I started my fiddle journey with you, that lesson splits complex technics in basic parts that I am able to practice efficiently. Thank you so much 💯
youre the man
and my cat announces his entrance as well
I bought a decent fiddle, learning through Fiddlehead.
You are a gifted wonderful teacher! Everyone on CZcams is so lucky to have your teachings available to us all! You clearly have an excellent education in music, but not everyone can teach as you do! Thank you. . .from the heart that lives within my violin/fiddle! P.S. The Waltz's are Great too!!
Thank you much for the feedback. I enjoy doing this and I am glad we are getting more fiddlers out there. Cheers!
Great lesson and great great shirt
Merry Christmas, I hope you know how much you help us trying to play, your are a remarkable teacher and I’m sure person! Thank You!!!
My pleasure! Thanks for the kind words. I'm working hard but having fun...
When I first started, I wish I had you for a teacher. I’ve learned so much more by watching, using your video lessons and my self teaching books. I paid way too much for lessons in the past. Thank you for ALL the help😁👍
I have never played a fiddle, but I have a decent one ordered, and I can't wait to start learning. I am a gigging lead & rhythm guitar player, and I hope some of what I know about guitar strums and playing by ear crosses over to fiddle playing. I can picture fiddle lines out in my head, but I don't know how that will work out in actual practice. I'll know soon!
some lessons just make so much sense of so much else ... this was one of them. I'll be accenting all over the damn place now :)
Frank's Fiddle Yay🙌🎻
You are a born teacher. Best fiddle lessons on CZcams. Thank you so much.
Thanks for the kind words. You are very welcome. Cheers.
Thanks for being here......I found you again.......after loosing you the other day..........this really means something..........a new endeavor for me.....ol time fiddle.........Marie Morris
Marie Morris We hope you keep finding your way back to! Thank you for fiddling with us!
I kept hearing that in every cajun folk song I listened to and I could not for the life of me figure out that sound.. well here it is!! Thanks FiddleHed :D
This is something I've been working on for a while. Getting that good old time sound.
XxSEETH3RxX It is satisfying!
Thank you to fiddlehead. I purchased the Irish Variation lessons, and enjoy playing so much more!
Need this so badly! Do more on bowing patterns! Thanks, Fiddlehed!
You are a great teacher. I have learned many things from you. Thanks for what you do.
Wow I haven't watched 5 minutes of this video and tried that trick. I didn't think I could make a simple song like "you are my Sunshine" sound better and yet I gave it a rhythm that really makes you want to tap your foot.
Austin goodwyn Keep practicing and every trick will become easier!!
Great tips, great inspiration. It was your videos that gave me the confidence that I could possibly play the fiddle. Thank you very much.
I’m so glad I found your page !!!
Thank you kindly for doing what you do, good sir!
A great and very informative video. I can't wait to try it!
Your series is so great. I've been playing for quite a few years but it's still really helpful to slow down and pick up the subtle stuff that you do.
Glad you found the videos. Thanks. :)
Fantastic...❤️❤️❤️❤️
Very impressed with this teaching.
🤙🤙these lessons are the best!! It really helps that you have some of the notes taped off, it makes it easier and it mirrors my own violin since i am a beginner.
We all were beginners. We all get better by staying with it. Cheers.
Love this lesson! I just started to become interested with Old Time music after watching dozens of Clifftop videos on CZcams. I noticed the fiddling in these videos all have a distinct sound and style...you just pointed me in the direction I need to get started in Old Time fiddling!
Thanks for the feedback. It's a lot of fun. Keep at it!
Wonderful wonderful tutorial! Gave great insight into the 1st steps of old time fiddling. Thank you!
Hey, Blaine! You know you're welcome, don't you?
Awesome tutorial. Thank you.
Really good lesson. I have such a hard time with these rhythms. You broke it down enough I could hear it for the first time. Now to learn it!
Keep at it. It will come! Cheers.

Thanks so much for all your great tips and advice.
For sure. Are you also a teacher?
FiddleHed No. I am a student of Fiddle. My email is deceiving. I meant the name for use with my fiddle lessons. Anyway, your site and lessons are wonderful. Thanks for all you do for those of aspiring to your talent.
Fantastic teacher. Its all about the groove ;-)
Gregory Edwards We quite agree🙏🏼🙌🏼👍
You have pretty much taught me how to play !
Glad to hear it! :)
hey man love you work, helping me heeps
Glad to hear it...thanks....
Found this while my fiddle was put away. Can't wait to do this when I get home.
Nice.
thankyou , greeting from bali island
thanks for this
Glad you found it useful. :)
I've been playing old time for decades, sometimes show folks the bowing. This video would have saved me at least 5 years figuring it out by myself the hard way (staying up way too late at festivals)
Thanks for the kind words. Staying up late is a fun way to learn. :)
I've got to say - your lessons are getting better and better - wish I was getting better at playing the fiddle - time restraints hamper my practicing.... Nevertheless, the videos you are producing are simply 'encouraging' - keep it up, and I hope it all pays off for you in the long term. Seasons Greetings From Ilkley Moor (West Yorkshire), without my hat on ;)
Thank you. You might be doing better than you think. Learning to play instruments is a unique journey. Keep at it. Even if you don't sense the progress. Make a tape. Make another tape in a few months. Listen to them both. You might be surprised. Have great holidays.
Great video, as always @fiddleHed! Just a question: Is it common to maintain this offbeat hoedown rhythm throughout the "part B" of many fiddle tunes (one example being Arkansas Traveler)? I was under the impression that the B portion is played a little "smoother" (without the accents), but that could be wrong. Thanks!
That was such an excellent lesson.
So good.
You are a good teacher.
What make violin are you playing please?
Thank you very much Peter. Glad your with us. 🙏🏽

Love the lessons. Trying to find a very first song to practice on. Or should I be doing some kind of drill exercises?
Fiddlehed.com is a subscription website that has a Level 1 series for beginners. The first three lessons in the sequence are open to anyone, even non subscribers. As a non-subscriber you can also access the blog and the forum. You should take a look. On CZcams, hundreds of older videos are still available for free. Search Fiddlehed Beginner in CZcams and tune lessons and technique lessons will show. Welcome to fiddling! Cheers.
thanks
You're welcome, Doug. Thanks for watching my channel!
So great that you take the time to teach fiddle ! I can only do a little in open chords , so have a problem with standard tuning !
Thanks for watching my channel. We all are challenged when we are learning something new. Just enjoy that fiddle. j.
Thanks for the great videos! I would love to learn this technique. I do have a question. In the beginning you talk about accenting the first short beat of each hoedown. But the exercises seem to be accenting the first long beat of each hoedown. So I think I am missing something. Can you help me understand this? Thanks!
You can practice accenting either the long note (beats one and three) are the first short note (beats 2 and four) which is more challenging.
In trying to add a real rhythm to my bowing, my bow is bouncing all over the place if I don't bow down toward the frog. As you ask specifically for middle bow, I am not sure why this is so huge a problem other than I'm new? Just keep trying is what I have as a plan at this point. Or perhaps it's fine to get good at it where I am and slowly move toward the middle?
What chord do you have there? I am gonna learn it on a Keyfiddler.
you should do a video on Otis's death song from cold mountain or a song that sounds similar
hey teacher I have a problem. My bridge keeps sliding forward and popping out. 6 yrs playing first time this has happened. Heeeelllllppp!!!!
Great! What song are you playing in the beginning?
"Carry Me Back" by Old Crow Medicine Show.
Thank you for these excellent suggestions. I am hitting two strings when I put the "crunch" in. Any ideas on this?
Depending on the key you are playing and the string you are hitting, it might sound ok. Practice scales "putting the crunch" on the notes and pay attention to the bow angle. Sometimes these things take a little time and suddenly you are just doing it the way you intended.
Thank you for your thoughts and encouragement
Zgreat info
and now i know why my songs don't sound quite right sometimes ^,^
Keep playing and they will sound fine. Cheers.
Can you do a lesson on reggae pattern or patterns and how to get that sound and Boeing also?
To make a request, please go to Fiddlehed.com. If you are not a subscriber, click on the button, Free Lessons. On the banner, click on the word, FORUM. There is a thread in there called Make a Request. Please enter it there so I can track it. Thanks.
FiddleHed
Will do👍
Can you create a lesson for the song Loch Lomond?
I have an extensive request list but this will go right on it. Great idea. Thanks.
Did you see the FiddleHed Facebook page? We are currently having a request event. Go there and put this request in the comment field for the post. For a week we will take requests and then everyone will vote on the top five requests. The one that wins, will be a video soon.
I'm not going to never watch u again if I master this
Screw Big. Brother ☠️
Why do you have the fingerboard marked? I just find that so lame.
A lot of violin teachers tape their fingerboards so students have an easier time seeing the fingering and or, the violin is also used by students. Same with marking the bow with tape. He may allow students to use that bow.
Thank you!
Appreciate your enjoyment 👍🏼
