Playwriting 101: Exposition

Welcome to Playwriting 101 with Julia Fisher! One of the best signs of strong playwriting is the ability to weave in exposition gracefully. Today I'll share some of my favorite tricks to show you how! (And I'll also show you what BAD exposition looks like so you can avoid it.)

I love Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, but I quibble with the use of Maggie to info dump for twenty minutes in the first act. It helps that Maggie the Cat does this monologue in a slip while Brick is drinking and scowling the whole time. Am I wrong for thinking this? At least there was dramatic tension while it happened and we get to see an unhappy marriage. But Streetcar had more subtlety.
