Nomad Roof Skins Aren't Reproduced, So We Fix The One We Got! - 1955 Chevy Nomad

- One of the big selling features on my 1955 Nomad was having a fairly straight and rust free roof skin. The only Nomad panel that isn't re produced is the roof section. They are unique to the Nomad and Safari, very different from a standard tri 5 wagon. So a good roof skin is worth it's weight in gold!
My 55 Nomad had 2 sections that were bent out of shape pretty bad. I assume at some point the car was strapped down and folded in the roof at the drip rails. To fix the mangled up roof I used a variety of metal working tools. Stud puller, hammer and dolly, pry bar, basically any tool I could use to straighten out the beat up roof.
Lots of pulling, welding hammering, but in the end I was pretty darn happy with the repair.
Also buy a shirt so I can buy more hood scoops:

I am 75 years old. This young man’s energy, enthusiasm and motivation is amazing and wonderful.
Heater noise should be excused, especially when it's this cold out. It's not fun when you're fighting these temps. Nomadness continues 👍
Anyone whining because he has heater noise obviously doesn’t wrench on their own stuff.
Much easier to work in a warm environment than struggling in sub zero temps
I used to hang around with a guy who rebuilt the front end sheet metal on his 55 Chevy OUTSIDE in the parking lot of Brandon University in Brandon, Manitoba, in JANUARY.
He got so that he could work for up to 1/2 an hour outside without gloves!
For those of you living in North Carolina, that's -30C with a wind that has been blowing for hundreds of miles with nothing to get in the way.
I can't even imagine.
Dan, I really appreciate that you show us how to, right wrong and then correct. We learn better that way. Thanks.
I'm learning along the way haha
I don't mind the heater noise what do they not know your a human? You gotta have heat. Anyway the only thing annoying is grinders and you do a good job w/time lapse on that so thank you for all the great content I enjoy your channel 😎👍
It shows unbelievable “sticktoitiveness” to stay with a project like that. I’m impressed
Thanks for all your efforts and funny comments, you are giving this old guy Motivation to get back to my 75 Trans Am project! Keep up the great work Danny
Excellent choice of music on this one. Nice progress.
Love the Keystone... classic!
I've been watching awhile and how I know your getting better is because the metal work is getting more and more refined
The roof rail area came out good. You spent time getting gaps looking decent, that means you CARE! 😆. Nice job Dan ✌
Oh I care haha
Pro tip, if you grab the very base of the stud with a side cutter and give it a twist it will break off cleaner and leave less to grind, great work man!
Congratulations on taking on such a major project. That is one lucky Nomad!
Yep...awesome..keep having fun..closer n closer..thanks
Great job, Dan. There's no doubt in my mind that you could build a car from the ground up.
Looks awesome Dan! All the little details that take 90% of the time! She is really coming together! I appreciate how much tedious work went into this video!
You have brought this car so far it has made for good viewing
Great to see your progress. Looking forward to seeing you tackle the tailgate!
Loved it Buddy . I Waite daily for yer video’s. Can’t Waite till ya get new project in the shop ! And I’m not even close to being sick of you workin on the nomad
Thanks for taking us along Dan really enjoyed the show today
Wow Dan! It's really coming along nicely! Looking good.
Completley amazing, this car is really taking shape. Can't believe it is the same car you brought home .
Dan, roof turned out well. A little filler and paint and it’ll be good as new. You’re a natural at body work. Thanks for sharing this fun with us. 👍
Filler fixes all haha
You got this Dan!
This is how it really is when it comes to building nice cars.
Outstanding I get my every other day FIX!!! Thank You Sir!!!
It is those little things that eat a bunch of time, but they sure make the difference once the car is finished.
Dan you are a master that nomads starting to look sharp, thanks for your time and videos
Slow and steady wins the race sometimes 🤙
Dan i watched some clips from Two Lane Blacktop yesterday and its been years since i had seen the show , but i had forgotten the driver of the 55 was the singer James Taylor back when he still had hair . I love his music as well as Carol King . i was taken aback a little .
Great video for a lazy, rainy Sunday!! The drip rails came out awesome!! So did the door jambs!! Looking good, Dan. Cheers!!
It's amazing what you get done.....I'm impressed...wish I had you working on my 56...two shops in Vegas didn't know what they were doing and sent my 56 home a total mess...luckily I found someone who actually had a brain and worked out all the problems.
I used to have a shop like yours for many years and did everything except machine work myself....that 55 is going to be awesome 👌
Oh man that's a bummer
Looking great Dan. Body work is coming around. Nice car
Hardest working real hot rodder on the tube. Nice job👍
Nice job there, the thing I like about this channel is that you guys show everything done, good and bad. Keep it up
Gilding a lily is a new one I had not heard. My grandfather always said we are not building a church. If someone was to fussy about out come of project
Love the one car garage and simple tools that's what being a car guy is all about.
Dan the body man. Only type of tradesman crazy enough to take on the kind of projects you do
three ways to get it done. right way, wrong way and my way only the last one ever seems to get the work finished though and is somewhere between the first two
I make jigs and dollies for that kinda work. A metal trough that fits in the grove, then tap it sideways to lift the outside channel away from the body.
In all my life, I've never seen anyone work 🙃 so fast! Just kidding. Love year show. I've learned a lot.
Nomad is really getting close, Dan your metalwork is amazing, great video man and I'll be looking for the next one 👍👍
You might be getting tired of working on the Nomad but I can assure you that most of us aren't tired of it. We want to see it to completion before you start another car. I understand though. You're the one who's been working non stop on the car for a long time. We'll watch whatever project you're working on. Keep up the good work.
Thabks man! It's getting done that for sure.
Just a little tip Danny. When pulling dent alway go with thought first in last out
The Nomad is already looking so much better. Once you finish the body work and get it in one color .
I'm sure you thought of this but door rubber will change the door gaps. I spent weeks getting my door gaps perfect on my 57 then put the rubber in... It changed everything and had to start over. Your doing good work !!
Hours of work now but miles of driving later!!! Well done Dan.......
Good job I’m in southern Ontario and it is plus 4 today and I still have two heaters going I can’t imagine your temps here
+4° C is about 39° F for those not privy to conversion. Lol
Plus 4 is spring weather...put on the shorts and open the shop door !!
I'm in sw Ontario, the tropics of Ontario. It's so warm that even the snow decided to change its ways and copy it's cousin water and turn into its relative humidity.
It's amazing to see you using a grinder for a change 🤣🤣🤣🤣
doing a great job ,dont know if you follow him but fitzees fabrication has good body tips and body welding videos ,i have worked in body shops since i was 16 years old and i am 55 , mostly hotrod shops, i think your doing great, i am currently restoring A 1978 BRONCO......
nice work Dan. Thanks for sharing.
From Junker to Gem... You are Really Cruising Along. Thanks for Sharing... Brother. Happy New Year's
As always the nomad is looking good! You are really bringing hear back from the dead. Looks like when that car got lifted up by Crane that it buckled the window frame at the top just a little? Might need to get a heavy hook inside and hammer the frame down?
Getting the details always takes longer. You want it to look right as possible. Good work! Thank you for sharing!
Dan. That's looking great. Doors are fitting gaps are closing roof lines are so much straighter 👍🏻its all those points of fabrication that will make a difference great video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😎
Passenger side looks great, nice tricks with the wire ,Good Job n Vid 👍👍
Doing great! Not worried about the heater noise more concerned about the entire bucket of the colonel.. 😂
Haha way she goes sometimes
@@DDSpeedShop I didn't say there was..... Been there done that.... Feel your pain
That dent-pulling-stud-welder gun is traditionally called a Spitznagel gun - an excellent tool for when a toilet plunger won’t work!
Toilet...stud welder..Right..??
So, exactly how does it unclog a toilet?
@@frankschwartz7405 …plungers have been used to pull dents, like this tool.
Hahaha
DANG..RUSSKIE...STUD welder
Great work!!! It’ll pay off at the end!👍🏻
Excellent job Dan, stay warm my friend. Not easy too, I know.
Good on. Not ready for the paint booth yet.
She's coming along nicely 👍👍🇨🇱
Yep bud that's going to be one solid car , great work man.
Welding blanket over your new carpet...maybe good idea.....
Great work Dan! You're the real deal!
Don't sweat the heaters... you gotta do what you gotta do! Its freakin cold out! Even here! The small stuff takes time, but it sure adds to the quality of the work. Nice job on the roof. That's a fairly difficult repair, lots of layers at the drip rail to deal with. I have a feeling someone strapped it through the roof and picked the whole car up too, like you were saying. Door jamb came out pretty nice too! Tedious, but it pays off in the end. I wonder what surprises lay under that lace paint on the door?? LOL
I always enjoy your videos, thanks for your effort to make them happen.
Nomad looking good Dan,,,, exellent work like always. Keep up the great videos shout out to you from Mexico buddy
I'd have thought you would have welded the door to match the panel , but aye . Most people can't remember from 1 side to the other anyway . 6 0f 1 , half dozen of the other . The roof repair went fabulous ! May want a new piece of trim on the top driver's side of rear window , unless you can fix that piece as is . They are not cheap as you've shown us . Coming along nicely ! No doubt it's cold as hell up there in Canada ! It's been 9 - 18 deg. F in NY for days now . 32 deg. F is 0 deg. C , so it's below 0 . Take care up there Dan & Danielle !
Another great video thanks for the entertainment you provided.
I gotta say that when you picked up the nomad I thought yous was crazy ,you are not ,you have way more patience than I ,I commend you ,keep up the awesomeness, thank you for sharing,I'm watching all of the vids, good job
Dan, Looks like someone used to move the Nomad using a forklift though the windows.
This is Canada in the winter….friggn cold so the heater noise is absolutely fine with me….my heater has been running for the last 3 weeks….
Crazy cold weather, should be nice again by Tuesday. Burning gas like crazy is this cold weather.
When you have a problem with like you do with your roof and with your roof it may be better to work from the inside out usually a large rubber hammer or something using does the Is Is trick
It's the little stuff that will make it awesome.
Need a T Shirt with special " Danno " Words...❤❤
Dan, I've busted through the parent metal twisting on the weld studs off. From that point on I've nipped and carefully ground the stubs off -- mo' bedda
The work today came out well Dan.
Great job on the drip rails and the passenger door. It looked like a P.I.T.A. to do all those small repairs but the end result really shows what can be done. The cold weather must make it much tougher to get things finished, great job Dan.
Yeah the cold does kill motivation.
Dan how do people expect you to stay warm if you have to turn your heater off because they are complaining about the fan noise ? To me that is just ignorant and you shouldn't listen to them people. I think the audio is just fine with the fan on to your heater while you're talking to us. People these days complain about everything just to see if someone will cater to their needs & it probably doesn't even bother them in the first place. Lmao, I LOVE HOW THE NOMAD IS TURNING OUT. Keep up the great work and God Bless you and your family. 💯💪🏼🙏🙏👍👍✌😊✌
We need an interview with the equally hard working heaters!
Hahaha
The car is looking really good especially with the keystone classics in the back
I think a Port a Power would have worked on the drip rail. Don't worry about the heater noise. Better to be comfortable.
It seems like Future Dan needs to have a talk with past Dan! LOL 😆 ✌🏻🇺🇸🇨🇦
I like all the work you do man
Genius work!!🤟
go inside, cut a small access hole, pound out the roof then weld access panel back in and cover with headliner
I think it actually has a good headliner in it and he doesn’t want to disturb it.
Coming out nicely. Little body work will make it look new. Keep on getting. ✌️😎👍
GREAT Job Dan !!!👍
Love watching you do metal work, it helps me with my project car
Danielle's Stud is playing with studs.😂😂
All pretty cars have filler. Keep going. It's really coming along. This could be the flagship. I can already see it.
Gotta Love it when a Dan Plan comes together! Great work Dan as usual 🙂
Is that 3 heater night similar to a 3 dog nite . Stay warm. Here sitting by the wood stove, cold brew in hand watching you and Pittsburgh Steelers some call it multi tasking I call it chilling. Be right back need more beer. Lol lol
Yes lots of ways to do things, clamp or modified vice grip attached to slide hammer works well on drip rails. Personally I would prefer you run the heaters and stay warm.
Awesome work, Thanks for sharing! Merry Christmas to You and Dani! 🎄⛄
Dan the heater wasn't that bad. Looking great on the body work. Looking forward to the next video. Have a great weekend 👍🖐
The germans took credit for making it first an it was a while before we made out own nail gun so they were called Spitznagel guns and used only in body shops.... if you had to ask for the cost of, you couldn't afford it for sure. I do agree Dan as when burn out happens quality takes the dive. It will for sure tho be nice to see how the other garage works out for you. Won't be the same without the stuff hanging off of the walls and the bottoms of the walls taking up walking room. Nice job saving those rails, I hadn't noticed before how caved in it really was. It might a made a man hold his breath considering the headliner seems nice enough
Dan, you have more patience than I do!! Lol. Vice grips and some bonds would have been my fix! I don't have all the body tools that you do, like the stud gun and slide hammer.
Fantastic job Dan
I really liked the part where you were cutting a small piece of 18ga, when a pair of needle nosed pliers *POOF* instantly appeared in you hand. (more TV magic)
