Permutations and Combinations Tutorial

  • This video tutorial focuses on permutations and combinations. It contains a few word problems including one associated with the fundamental counting principle. Permutations are useful to determine the different number of ways to arrange something where as combinations is useful for determining how many ways to combine something when the order does not matter such as selecting members to form a committee. In a permutation, the order matters. Examples include repeated symbols or arranging letters in a word such as alabama or mississippi. This video also discusses the basics of permutations and combinations using letters such as ABCD.

The reason why 0! Equals 1 is because when you do 0!= 1!/1! (One factorial over one factorial) it just cancels out to 1. It’s the same if you were to do 2!=3!/3!. When you expand the equation, You would cancel out the 3 on the bottom with the three on the top and be left with 2 times 1 which, of course, is 2!

For anyone looking for an (in my opinion) an easier way to calculate the r-Permutations:
    P(n,r)
    For example:
    P(4,3)= 4x3x2
    p(8,5)= 8x7x6x5x4
So the r is actually just the number of times you need to multiply down. So in the first example, we multiply down 3 times, where as in the second one we multiply 5 times.
An easier way (in my opinion) to do the equation for r-Combination is:
    C(n,r) = P(n,r)/r!
    For Example:
    C(6,3) = P(6,3)/3!
    P(6,3) = 120 (6x5x4)
    120 / 6 (3! = 3x2x1)
    C(6,3) = 120/6 = 20
    A second example:
    C(7,2) = P(7,2)/2!
    P(7,2) = 42 (7x6)
    42 / 2 (2! = 2x1)
    C(7,2) = 21
    A third example:
    C(8,3) = P(8,3)/3!
    P(8,3) = 336 (8*7*6)
    336/6 (3! = 3x2x1)
    C(8,3) = 56
    Hope this helps.

I may be late to the party here but i seriously want to express my appreciation. It is insane to me how the exact same topic can seem either incredibly intimidating and hard or fairly simple depending on the explanation/person who explains. This is by far the best video on this topic. You sir saved my day.

Thank you so much for taking your time teaching us stuff all for free. Whenever I look at my batchmates taking help from some CZcams channels like Physics Wallah, I tell them about you. You teach literally every topic to us in a quick and easy way. And you don't even teach things in a nutshell, once you take up a topic, you take it upon yourself to explain the topic writing the depths of our it. Thank you so much.

  • @leahsoriano4152
    @leahsoriano4152 Před 11 měsíci +12

10:51 If there's anyone wondering, I think I figured out why 0! is equal to 1 while watching the video. Basically, if n is like the menu of things you're choosing, and r is the amount of things you can choose from that menu. We can see in the question that n is 5, r is also 5, meaning you have to pick everything out of the menu and not leave anything out. Therefore, there's nothing to cancel out at the bottom to account for anything you can't pick. And having a look at the numbers that fill the spaces at the top left of the screen, I can understand it's the same as just dividing the full factorial by 1. (Please feel free to ask me about any part of my explanation if it was still confusing for you.)
