How (and Why) to Use a Rangefinder When Hunting with Your Crossbow!

  • A range finder is a necessary piece of equipment when archery hunting. Here are some tips about how to use one, and an example of a hunt where I didn't use one and what happens when you don't use a rangefinder while whitetail deer hunting!
    This is not a channel about shooting big bucks. I don't discriminate--I'll shoot any legal deer. ;)
    I want to help make CZcams the #1 place for quality hunting entertainment. I want to help spread the hunting lifestyle. To do that, I set up this channel to showcase the crossbow and help others film their hunts and get those videos online. So, subscribe to this channel to be entertained and learn more about crossbows and filming in the outdoors.
    This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt almost exclusively with the crossbow. I love it. Sure, like a lot of kids, I started hunting with a good ol' Model '94 Winchester 30-30 back in the 80's, but drifted away from hunting when I went off to college, law school, and started a family. As my daughter got older, I regained my interest in the outdoors, and I consider myself lucky to hunt on the same property today that I hunted on as a kid. I got the Excalibur Axiom crossbow in 2010 and I haven't looked back. This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...
    ...and music, too! My related channel, Yankee Militia, showcases my music. Some of the music is hunting-related, so check that out, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, so the two are intertwined. The album for the current season is available wherever you download music online, and the Special Edition CD is available on Amazon.com.

    I've been hunting for over 40 years but I'm just getting started in crossbow (all I ever hunted with was guns till now). Thanks for making all of these videos- they are a wealth of knowledge and I'm sure they will help me be successful when I get to the point that I'm actually hunting with my crossbow!

    Something I do when using a range finder is I make a range card which is a simple sketch of the area with the ranges to the objects I can see with the range wrote down next to the object so I don't need to remember. The card is laminated and I write it in alcohol marker so it is weather protected and I can erase it after the hunt with alcohol pads, or you can use a grease pencil. I just use a plastic binder clip to attach the card to the tree stand. Range cards are used in the military by snipers and machine gunners in static positions.

      Or in his case he could have range markers scattered in a circle fashion ---color coded in a perimeter around the blind. Would not help in a hunt out in public land but on his own it would! :)

    I have often dreamed about going out deer hunting a week before season with a paintball gun. Later in the season when my brother shoots a little 4-point I would just point at the kill zone and say "See that pink paint? I already took this buck!"

    Rich what I do especially when hunting on my own property . I go out before the season opens & put out 3 color coded yardage flags around all of my tree stands. Blue, Orange,&Yellow. 1 color for 20 yards, another color at 30, & the last color at 40. I still take the rangefinder out with me & check the yardages so I don’t happen to forget what each color represents for yardage . The flags can be bought at Tractor Supply or any farm store. They come in a bundle of 50 . They are a wire with a flag on to he top. Works great for a season. Could spray some scent on the flags to stop the deer.

    This was a great video. I think you are on point about the rang finders, but that got me thinking how you refer this item being important, it would be great if you did one on scopes as well. When I first started I didn't have a clue of what I was looking for or why I was looking for a different scope than the one that it came with. Over time I learned why I thought I needed a different one and the different types of radicals and there purpose if that makes any sense. Or a video explaining why you change your scope if you did.

    • @Deathbybunjie
      @Deathbybunjie  Před 7 lety

      +josh fishon that is a good idea for a video. What were the differences that you saw with a new scope or why did you change personally? I get this question a lot.

    • @Deathbybunjie
      @Deathbybunjie  Před 7 lety

      +josh fishon also I did do a video on changing the scope and I think I address some of that there but a new video wouldn't be a bad idea.

    • @joshkraai7657
      @joshkraai7657 Před 7 lety

      So went back a few different videos while getting distracted with some of your others ones that are well done as well. As for me, why I thought I need a new scope. Well, the 4 lines that went across my scope was kinda of a distraction for me and in low light conditions I would loss confidence not able to see the thin lines very well. So I switched to a bdc radical just because it was an update and kinda like the same settings as my muzzleloader scope. I'm also more confident that it holds it zero. Before I decided that I was going to upgrade I had to ask myself other important factors. What type of hunting I was going to do more often. Like was I going to take long shots in the field or short ones in the woods(lightning had a big play when hunting in the woods) what kind of optical power did I feel comfortable with. Did I need Illuminated or red dot. How important is multiple coated glass. What about my warranties. That's some of the things that help me make a decision. I'm sure you covered some of these as well, but heck I watched so many of your videos I can't remember. Think I need to make another investment called a note book and take some notes. You do awesome job and I very much appreciate your work.

    Get a rangefinder that has a backlight and also one that calculates the angle upon which you are firing if hunting from a tree stand.

    • @Deathbybunjie
      @Deathbybunjie  Před 7 lety

      +Broxty yep you pretty much have to have one that calculates the angle. I mentioned that in a couple of videos. But you are right about the backlight too. That is really valuable in low light conditions when you need it most! Very good points!

    the sound of the bow got to the doe before the arrow did......when they flinch , they crunch down getting ready to bolt.....always aim low with a noisy bow?

    • @Deathbybunjie
      @Deathbybunjie  Před 6 lety

      +commonconservative I don't know about always, but on alert deer and distant deer yes for sure. Most of mine have not ducked, and usually on 20 yard shots on non -alert deer, no reason to aim low for me. But I am playing around with a few things that will come out in future videos. Thanks and thanks for watching!

  • @ethan.guidry5676
    @ethan.guidry5676 Před 5 lety +1

    Aren’t you supposed to use the normal distance no matter what
    I bought a halo 450 and all it tells me is the angle and normal distance. It doesn’t calculate the other distance. But that shouldn’t matter because you don’t need to use that distance unless you are trying to figure out how far it is from the ground to your deer right?

    • @Deathbybunjie
      @Deathbybunjie  Před 5 lety +1

      Gravity only affects arrow flight horizontally. It doesn't really matter how far you are sitting from the deer, only how far away it is horizontally, because that will give you the most accurate aiming and the most like your target practicing. I've done some videos on this, and I am doing more to help explain that.

      I don't have any experience with it but I wouldn't be surprised if it's still a good buy, most of the Kinks seem to have been worked out in that type of equipment these days. Assuming it compensates for elevation, like most of them do these days, it's probably a pretty good tool. Good luck!
