Synopsis:
Amit (Amitabh Bachchan) a poet decides to bury his past life along with his love for Chandni (Rekha) when he meets Shobha (Jaya Bachchan). Shobha's life has come to a standstill after her fiancé Amit's brother Shekhar (Shashi Kapoor) dies in a plane crash.
Amit had only come to mourn the death of his brother with Shobha but ends up sacrificing his own love and life in an attempt to give shobha a new lease of life. When fate brings Amit and Chandni face to face again, both are married to different people but neither can ignore their feelings for each other.
Silsila is a story, thwarted by society's demands, which reappear as adultery but can it survive in the face of society?

Its interesting to note the structure of lyrics here. So basically you pick up a key word/ hook word from the verse and then use it back in your reply to counter what other person has said. This banter of words keeps on going till one of the singer/participant comes with the ultimate punch line. Similar structure was used in "Vaak yudh" during Mushaira and kawwali in mughal courts to amuse the audience. However, considering the complexity involved this word play is not very frequently used in Bollywood song. Requires very high level of wit and command on language to achieve it. Noted lyricist like rajendra krishan has done a great job. But imagine two different person playing this game of word, without knowing what is going to be thrown at them..

I can imagine that they performed just as well throughout the film, which makes me want to watch it even more. I think about watching it quite often but don't really get the chance. I was ten years old at that time. I was mesmerised by the songs and asked my parents to let me go to watch this movie. And.... I was scolded, permission denied. I was told that this is not a good movie for children.. I wondered what was there in this movie that I was not allowed to watch it. This was the culture of that generation. Now's generation knows each and everything at this tender age. This is the difference in now and then generation.
Saw this song 4 times just to digest Rekha Jis expressions completely. She is totally involved in the song, especially from 2:35 to 2:50 when AmitJi keeps his hand on her shoulders and she tries to take it off. The catch and release sequence in the last stanza of the song is soo cute. Amazing piece of involvement and of course her blush on the last line of song says everything also remember to see Rekha Jis hair around AmitJi neck (the last 15 seconds of the song) , this song is simply wow
