ik this playlist includes a mix of music styles that could also be classified into genres such as "city pop (-esque J-pop)," shibuya-kei (mostly this), fusion/jazz-funk, sophisti-pop, and R&B. However I decided to have some fun with the shibuya-kei term by connecting it to "acid jazz" in the Western music scene, hence the shibuya-kei tag you see here.

I've noticed that many people have commented on the use of the term "acid jazz" here. As I mentioned in the initial edit, it was meant as an inside joke. I do plan to create another non-Japanese playlist that will fully "reflect the essence" of acid jazz.

Don't get me wrong, I like this playlist. But in the world of ever morphing music "genres", this sounds like smooth jazz. Bands that grew from the Grateful Dead's intense improvisation are where I first heard the category acid jazz. Add some brass to a Dead band and go wild.
In the end, music comes in a million flavors. Enjoy it everyone.

@@gristen that's just not true. japanese pop records have been described and marketed as "city pops" since the late 70s. ironically "j-pop" is the western term, it's just called "pop" in japan, and before that it was kayoukyoku
@@dirtfriend ive watched videos of modern japanese people reacting to city pop and none of them have ever heard of the genre, even older people that would've remembered the 70's hadn't heard of that name. if it was actually called that it must've been a super obscure name or just got forgotten with time.
the younger people hadnt even heard the songs before because i dont think listening to older music is as popular for younger generations there as it is over here. the genre probably has got a lot more current fans in the west than in japan.
also of course its just called pop there, that just makes sense lol
@@dirtfriend yea i just checked the japanese wikipedia for city pop and you were right that the name was actually invented there, but it goes on to say that the term city pop fell entirely out of use somewhere in the 90's and the genre itself simply merged with pop. that is until western vaporwave artists started to sample city pop songs and sort of brought the genre back. so i guess we're both right here lol, thanks for helping me learn something new
btw there was apparently a japanese book published in 2022 titled "what is city pop?" so i guess the term is still relatively unknown there.

I'm still at the beginning, but this definitely was somewhat of an acid jazz experience. If you've never listened to Jamiroquai, I'd recommend "Stillness in time" and some other songs from their earlier albums, as it basically formed the identity of acid jazz for alot of artists.
you might say what you want about Japan, you might love it, you might hate it or something in between, but there's no denying that when it comes to music, they always find some way to make straight fire
