  • "Abide with me" is one of the world's best known hymns, featuring in many state funeral services over the years while also having a significant secular presence, being sung, for example, at every Football Association Cup Final since 1927. Francis Lyte's words are said to have been written in 1847, on the evening before he preached his farewell sermon before heading to Nice in an unsuccessful effort to regain his health.
At first the hymn was sung to a tune by Lyte himself, but in 1861 the compilers of "Hymns Ancient & Modern" asked William Henry Monk to write a new tune for the words. The resulting "Eventide" has seen the hymn become hugely popular throughout the world.
