- Construction of the M32/Parkway motorway filmed in colour between 1968-1971 by the Stoke Park Institute. Footage includes The Dower House set in it`s grounds before the motorway was built, the emptying of the original Duchess`s lake, the demolition of the thirteen arches in Eastville and the opening of this stretch of the motorway in 1971. Plus incredible footage of this whole stretch of motorway from Dower House to Junction 2 in Eastville before construction started. Watch and weep....
Very interesting film to show how lovely the area was before the M32 was built. What would help would be a re.Edit with a few on screen messages telling us exactly where & what we are looking at. Thanks for letting us see this film.
As a child I used to walk to Snuff Mills from Filton and tromped across the duchess fields.
While they were building the main roadway we were interested in the badger tunnel they put in but the people eg us, would never be able to walk across again. I remember going home and telling my mum ‘cus it really didn’t seem fair! There was a stone memorial to a woman within site of the mental hospital, she reportedly died from a horsey accident. Thanks for the memories.
Yes. I believe it was 18 year old Lady Elizabeth Somerset who died after her horse bolted in 1760. She was the daughter of Charles Duke of Beaufort and Duchess of Beaufort Elizabeth (nee Berkeley).
Nice film. My grandparents used to frequent Duchess Lake, seen here, in their courting days. My nan passed away this year but my grandad is still in good health and I'm sure he'd love to see this.
Fantastic footage! Moved to Whitehall in 2008 from Reading, but now starting to learn about the history of where we live. My nan grew up in Marmaduke street, Totterdown, the irony. I've joined that group 'Bristol then and now' brilliant!
I went to a rave there in the early noughties.
Thanks so much for posting this....
Read about the viaduct but first time seeing it taken down. Thanks.
Awesome!
Moved to Lockleaze in 1968 (Morris Road) aged 9, but never saw this area until I was older and the M32 had been built. Although I remember seeing the 13 arches in Eastville before they were demolished. Thanks for posting this film, it's an excellent record, I assume it is Standard or Super 8mm film?
Hey Tom !

Nice job
No problem, Steve. Thought you would love to see this. If you wish, I`ll post you a DVD as I know your Dad is a resident of Eastville and I guess he would love to see it too. Not sure if you do facebook, but this is good, too. facebook.com/groups/bristolthenandnow/?fref=ts
