My grandfather used to be in the band with Lester Flatts and Earl Scruggs, before they became Flatt and Scruggs. He played with them twice at the Grand Ole Opry. Grandpa played the fiddle and upright base. He also played with Chet Atkins and Lefty Frizzell, but only in back porch settings, and all before they got famous. Great reaction.

@@BourbonCountryReacts James, my Grandfather, passed in the late 80's. The family preacher told this story at his funeral. "One day, Lester, Earl, Lefty and Chet sat in James' living room and said, James, we want you to come to Nashville with us for a year. If we can't make it by then, we can come back home". Grandpa said, ""The Chattahoochee river (Our local river in Alabama) don't run through Nashville, and I ain't getting that far a way from the river". Not his best of decisions. Him and Earl corresponded by letter for the rest of his life.
I know this all sounds improbable and fantastic, but these are the stories of my childhood.

@@janesharp4341He was. He could play almost every stringed instrument and a harmonica. But the two he excelled at was the Fiddle and Base (guitar and upright). He did play once on the Grand Ole Opry with Lester and Earl when their base player was sick for about two months and they asked Grandad to fill in while he recovered. As a result, the Opry offered him a job with the house band playing base, which he declined. He played once more on the Opry with them years later, but I don't know the circumstances that led to that one.

Earl is more than a legend. He revolutionized the way the instrument is played. You may want to look at him with Bill Monroe, who was essentially the inventor of bluegrass, and his band. For the record, I agree about the Vince Gill recommendation as well.

I have been with bluegrass players jamming and there was always that "leader" who would ramp this tune up the last time around to see who could keep up. After they finished the tune, they would look around and start laughing. The guy(s) that had to drop out because they couldn't keep up would eventually start laughing as well.

My son does not care for alcohol, but there's something about NC moonshine that makes it easy to drink on a river bank, by a fire while night fishing, like you said, it's dangerous, you don't taste the alcohol, he and his buddies tend to wake up sometime the next morning...not quite clear on why they're sleeping on the river bank, or where the fishing poles are... Please don't get yourselves dead, or puke purple in the front yard, I enjoy watching you guys far too much and would really miss the joy you afford me!
