Repetition of Time is a level set for the original Prince of Persia that cleverly re-uses a lot of the game's quirks and events. I played through it by request at • Repetition of Time (Pr... , and then went back to discover the tricks behind the levels. - Hry
27:06 "The player then has a route to the exit, as well as a headache"
I cant stop laughing
acmwl / can you explain the joke, i didnt watch the whole thing so i didnt get it :(
@@sinansipo You should definately watch the whole video, its really good, im not gonna ruin it
"Finally! I got out! But ow, I got headache during that." 😔
"If you'd like to play it yourself", ha, no, I saw the stream videos. I am NOWHERE near good enough at Prince of Persia for this.
That fake wall illusion reminds me how the SNES Prince of Persia used to hide life extending potions. From memory I think it was in level 6, 8, and 14
Thank you very much for this excellent and very in-depth analysis of Prince of Persia and Repetition of Time!
It's really mind-boggling how many tricks KingOfPersia pulled off with this mod. :-o
Thomas Müller You’re welcome! It really is amazing how creative he was, using the fixed events in such original and unexpected ways.
I tried playing this recently and I noticed something about Level 12 that I wanted to comment on: it's the player that knocks over the potion. The two falling tiles are directly above the potion, and when you run over them you knock them down onto the potion, spilling it.
Slightly more difficult level 13 my ass, took me like 15 tries to get through that one...
I'm really glad you decided to do this, this was very insightful even for me. You did all the research and put it all into a well-edited video for us to enjoy. I'd also be absolutely delighted to play (and finish!) any and all mods you might decide to make in the future, so I'll be looking out for that.
Šavle CZ Hah - I know, I didn’t have trouble with it on the stream when I first played it but when I went back to record footage for this video it took me ages! A lot of quick saving was involved in the end...
Thanks again for the great comment - really glad people enjoy these :)
This mod is genius. Seeing all its quirks dissected like this is also quite fun, like taking apart a rubix cube and reassembling it.
Man, this mod is so creative in its use of game's hidden quirks. I wish there was more of this kind of stuff.
I would definitely play a Prince mod by David X. Newton.
ramp 2024 is a prince of persia level hub lol
i remember playing pop when i was about 5 and have very fond memorys of it.
i never knew anybody had made custom content for this but its fantastic.
i cant help but think that introducing 5 year old me to these amazing mods (and myhouse) would have just broken me as a kid, but would have been the coolest thing ever.
I have seen your walk through of the Repetition of Time mod years ago but this is the first time I have stumbled on this video. As someone who was always curious about the PoP1, as it was one of the first games I have ever played (in 1990) I have disassembled the PoP1 code as well as analyzed and contributed to SDLPoP. I have created super high jump (jumping up 2 floors in feather mode .. a feature that exists in the sequence table but was never implemented), jump and grab, saving in feather mode and a few bug fixes.
The video is spot on with a single comment. Backtable, wipe table, midtable (+ object table) and foretable refer to the way the graphics is rendered based on how far from the viewer the graphics "layer" is. Each title has 2 bytes (represented as 2 arrays per room) - a tile byte and a modifier byte. The tile type is represented by the lower 5 bits of the tile byte. The 6th lower bit of a loose tile has a special meaning as explained in the video. Jordan Mechner also used the same bit in his editor when creating a game. It was set to one if a tile can have a floor above it. Modern editors such as Apoplexy set all 3 upper bits of the non-loose tiles to 0 because the game uses bit masking to only look at the lower bytes to determine a tile type.
If you are ever interested in doing more Prince of Persia videos, I have created a mod which can be found at www.popot.org/custom_levels.php?mod=0000232 . It is a heavily modified version of PoP1 with elements from PoP2, Repetition of Time and a lot more done on the executable level. The idea was to improve the mechanics of the game while keeping the levels somewhat close to the original with a few exceptions as well as add many surprises.
Thanks for such detailed feedback - I’ll definitely take a look at your mod :)
16:55 Three years later I FINALLY UNDERSTAND this parallel universes bit. Good gravy I love this mod and your explanation of its tricks.
And I think the biggest accomplishment of this video is thar because it also acts as an explanation for vanilla PoP's code event and room structure gives me MAD respect for how much the iconic cinematic platformer works (even if I still struggle to see it through to the end in the game's default time limit)
Amazing video! The mod itself reminds me somehow of Temporary Insanity for Wolfenstein 3D - a mod that only works under DOS (or DOSBox) and basically shatters the original game's mechanics into obscure puzzles.
deserves way more views and recognition
This was great, especially after having watched your playthrough. Thank you!
Great effort and excellent explanation, keep it up mate! Can't wait to play
Your work is riveting and interesting I hope you will continue stumbling through various other companies, Monolith may be an interesting company to look into its history.
I remember downloading PoP: Total Pack 2.06 around 2011, and this was the first mod I tried.
Nothing quite blew my mind like Repetition of Time, I'll tell you that.
Probably my favourite game of all time for so may reasons, first game I ever played on the Amiga and was blown away. 30 years later and I could still watch videos like this all day. Great video thanks for sharing x
Great video, David; entertaining, funny and informative as usual. Hopefully we'll indeed see a PoP mod of your own at some point.
I had never heard of this mod until today. It’s weird to think that this mod is half the age of the actual game itself.
Amazing... I got stuck at the level where the guard was dancing on the tile closing the gate and thought I had to glitch my way out. Never thought to drink that potion. The author of the mod was very clever. Thank you for the explanations! And I hope you do give modding for PoP a try.
Still one of my favourite videos on this site. I wish you could do something like this in the future once again.
Thanks :) I’m really enjoying doing the code explanations of Transport Tycoon just now and I’ll look out for other games that take my interest!
This video is amazing! What an amazing mod. I miss this game
Awesome video, going to try this mod now!
Man the commentary is awesome. I am laughing so much.
That was a great analysis! I've never thought that prince of persia mechanics could be so interesting!
Thanks :) I was amazed as well as I started digging into it - the way he repurposed the rigid hard-coded parts of the game was just incredible!
This is some peak Newton content. More stuff like this!
very cool video, i'd love to see something similar for the prince of persia 4d mod, it was one i played back in the days and still struggle to understand the things going on in some of those levels
good show mate, good show!
This is awesome!
Great explanation :)
Thanks for the walk through the inner workings of both the original PoP and the mod itself. As a fellow programmer by trade, it always makes me happy to see how a cleverly programmed code can be bent to serve other purposes. In my opinion, it's a form of art that almost has no equivalent in other field of human ingenuity.
Didn't know there was an engine port, much less a modding community. Thanks!
Gabriel Goldsztajn It’s small but still very enthusiastic after all these years :)
Wow, I didn't even know that PoP modding is a thing. Awesome!
andersdenkend There’s one famous one, 4D Prince, which I think was made by a Russian fan - outside that, most of the modding community was new to me too!
I absolutely love the combination of well-explained thoroughness and the absolute wit and snark put into this script, but also into the stream videos themselves. They've become my recent "go-to" when I need noise and a smile.
I seem to be unable to find the Visual Tricks manual mentioned in this video at 3:08 - the link in the video doesn't appear to work, simply giving a 404 and "Unknown document ("RoTVisualTricks"). Anyone got any tips on how to find it?
Wow the creator of this mod knew his shit. Talk about art though adversity.
I remember having this bugged version of pop on the atari st as a young pup. For some reason any closed gate if you turned right and pressed down it'd just fart you through it. Think the level with the fat bastard gate on the left just made you end up with 2 tiles the candles in the background
After watching your speedrun this video feels like youre in slow motion
Nice Video.
Can somebody explain the background numbers in apoplexy editor? Some tiles are numbered 1 some 2 and some 3
Didn't figure that out yet.
Regarding your video editing and producing skills, you're *really* brilliant. Can you offer advice on how to learn to get to your level?
Is there still some PoP modding in your future? Would love to see a mod by you!
you make nice content you should have million subs but where are you from ?
Ahmed Bousrih Thanks! I’m Scottish but was born in England :)
Gotta note one thing, even though somehow got past the puddle, you still die.
For some reason you can't see the wall behind the grilled doors in this game...
There is a really good level set called 'The Great Escape' that you should try out
BouncingblueSoul Sterry I remember that title from somewhere! I almost think I played it many years ago and have now totally forgotten it... I’ll have to see :)
I know another mod with some secrets.
30:29 So no one is gonna talk about this big ass potion?
29:04 The statue goes back to normal basically.
32:05 Must've been the wind that spilled it, and it summons another you that dies for it to kill you.
Is the "princed.org" name a reference to blacked, like the porn thing?
Regardless, this is amazing stuff and I like it. It feels like the PoP equivalent to the Paralell Worlds Zelda Hack, where they make a harder version of the game that is nonetheless consistent with the logic and style of the original thing.
Er. I think it's more from "Prince-Ed", like a shortened form of Editor!
Ooft
The bigger problem i have with your statement THE EXE IS NOT MODIFIED!!! Makes it sound like NO files were touched at all!!! Not one... I mean..
Why not just say that to achieve these results we modified the XXXX FILE... instead of naming arbitrary files you DIDNT modify...!!!
I think his point is that the game logic is intact, so that the basis of most of the tricks - except at least the modified tiles - are in the original code.
@@cameronwest7038 To be honest with u.. i have NO idea why i had such a bee in my bonnet back then... honestly.. WHO GIVES A SHIT about the wording.. he clearly meant what u have just suggested.. so i apologise for 2 years ago me! :)
@@sheepthehack lol. Thumbs up.
This is awesome!
