The one piece of advice Alina didn’t mention in her video is: call ahead. Call and make sure a hotel is going to be open and you can actually book it. And that grocery stores, restaurants and cafes are open for business. Foresight is the most important part of touring; never leave the most critical things to chance. Last thing you want is an unpleasant surprise at awaiting you at the end of a journey. It can be summed up in one word: prepare! That said, the cycle ride to St. Naum was unforgettable, indeed.

I actually loved the adventure. Saint Naum is a beautiful place, both the church and the nature around it. Ohrid is now definitely on my list for next travel destinations. I know that feeling when something doesn’t go as planned during a vacation, but the important thing is accepting the facts and enjoying the moment. There’s always something positive in everything.

Great Video! Macedonia looks really nice, I would like to visit one day. I travelled to many parts of Europe during my childhood but never visited the Baltics or eastern Europe at all. The west always puts a negative view on it. Thanks to your videos we can see that is not the case at all. Keep up the good work.

OH the beauty, the calculations, the intrigue, the anguish, the serenity, the endurance! (Sounds like a monologue intro for the olympics!). What a challenging and rewarding day you had!! Thank you for showing us your safety gear and flashers! You always amaze me with your calculations of pace, preparations of food and water, backup plans. Wise choices. I am so thankful that you made it back safely - You live on to tell the story to the grandkids! The fall foliage, and the serenity of the monastery was such reward for the work. And, both you and I attract animals and pets, because they know psychically when they find another loving soul! I always pray for your safety in the journey - go with God! 🙏🏻🤗😘

Thumbs up for a great video. As a cyclist myself, 70k is a decent ride for one day for someone not used to biking long distances, so congrats on making it both ways! The road didn't look like there was much traffic until you got back near Ohrid, but without any shoulder of any sorts, that added to the challenge. (Even with lights, it's not the safest with cars whizzing by like that!) Loved the scenery. So tranquil. Want to visit there now.

    • @AlinaMcleod
      @AlinaMcleod  Před 3 lety

Thank you! It wasn't a crazy amount of traffic, but a lot more than I caught on camera. I usually tried to film when there wasn't any cars coming. Overall drivers were respectful and gave me enough room, but yeah, not much of a shoulder at all.

What a scenic 'cyclical' odyssey with such unexpected 'twists and turns' (and upgrades?!) that you handled so masterfully, as usual! What a magnificent Monastery of St. Naum (c.830-910) and the drone shots were spectacular! The music you pick always puts the cherry on top! Thanks Alina ... stay safe and looking forward to your next wonderful video!

My story. I also like to travel by bike. Once I traveled to abandoned villages. There were only about five houses there. And one house was deserted. It stood on the edge of the village. Around the house there was a tall grass and an old apple tree with delicious apples. I snuck through the grass and entered the house. The door was open. Inside, there was a total mess. Old magazines, newspapers, letters and books were lying on the floor. Some were from the Soviet times in 1960. Among them I found a diary of a young girl written in 1957 in Irkutsk. I know that in those days, the Soviet authorities sent lithuanians ( Im from Lithuania) to exile in the camps in Irkutsk. It is quite possible she was somehow connected with it.... I started reading the diary and completely immersed in the atmosphere of that time. As if, by a time machine moved back. Amazing. After that, I wanted to find the grave of this girl to pay tribute ( I felt strange connection with her) because most likely she was already dead. I inspected the nearest cemeteries I found, but there was no grave with her surname on it. Finally, three years later, accidentally I found another one, a small cemetery hidden among the trees, near that village. There, there is a grave of few people with her surname. The whole family. Most likely, it is her, her mother, father and an infant. Rest in peace, dear.

Life is all about conquering fear. Alina is doing a great job of that. This is a day that you will always remember. It's the best way to travel is you have the time.
I was caught in a similar situation in France one day. After battling headwinds on my touring bike all day I was exhausted and came across a roadside motel. It was closed for the season with no place to pay but the French Maid was cleaning and airing out all the rooms. The room closest to the road had the door wide open so I snuck into the room with my bike and closed the door. I rolled my bike into the bathroom and waited. Just before she left for the evening I heard her come to my room and lock the door from the outside! I was locked inside the room. I checked the window beside the door as a means of escape just in case I did get locked inside. It was through this window that my bike and I made our escape into a very foggy morning the next day. I might add that I had the best hot shower in my life that night.
Alina... May the wind be always at your back! 😉

I remember taking a 35 mile (56 km) bike ride along and back Narragansett Bay. The last 5-7 miles were a gentle but continuous uphill, the hill that wouldn't end. With 5 miles (8 km) to go my leg muscles were burning and hurting, and I was pouring sweat and breathing hard, and I so wanted to just stop, but I had to push through to get back to my car. It was mostly a beautiful ride, but holy hell, I won't forget that day. I know exactly how you were feeling there.

I bike often in the city but every time i do 55-60 km for an afternoon on roads out of the city I'm feeling tired afterwards and look exactly as you did in the end. I think three crucial things are to blame. First is not enough hydration before getting on the bike, second is doing such big distance rarely and the third for me is stressing about the cars that pass me in my lane. Biking the roads without worrying about the cars must be awsome.

Alina, 70 KMS is really a great job in this area. Leave your cycling activities until you visit the Netherlands. Hardly any hills and a perfect infrastructure for biking. Most probably you noticed when in Amsterdam. Please note that the rest of the Netherlands are far from equal to A’dam and worthwhile visiting when this corona virus does not hit us any longer. Stay healthy!

I miss the Radler in your hand after your return. Nice little trip and great scenery. I biked solo Bulgaria 6 years ago and remember the car drivers and places with no restaurants...

Great videos Alina, thanks for the promotion of our country Macedonia. If you have time you should see and combine in one day - museum on water - bay of bones, then climb Galicica National Park in good day there is excellent view from above on Ohrid and the lake, and later you can eat some good lunch in Trpejca. Btw which is your next destination here in Macedonia ?

You are a great biker. wow! 70kms is a big big distance that too on a hilly terrain. And your unforgettable expressions when you found the hotel closed. I felt so sorry.

Quite the experience. That's an amazing ride, with a little hiccup along the way. Something you can talk about for years to come. Take care.

Sometimes being daring an adventurous isn’t suppose to be easy peezy. It’s the challenge of doing the unknown that makes life fun, scary and exhausting. You did well little world traveler. It’s an experience that will never leave you. By the way, your drone and camera work is fantabulous 😁 safe travels
