A New Solution To Access Public Land | HUNTING GEAR

  • A new solution to access public land. This piece of hunting gear will open up a whole new array of options to access pieces of public land whether it's whitetails along a major river, a cast and blast, being able to backpack in and float out a moose or caribou, or using it for getting into tight areas in southeast Alaska for black bears.
In this video, Randy Newberg is joined by Joe Risi of Alpacka Raft who shows him the usefulness of their lightweight backpack-able rafts that weigh only 8-14 pounds depending on the model. They float a stretch of the Gallatin River in Montana to test them out and see how they perform. Needless to say, Randy is impressed.

Helpful tip, anytime you inflate your boat, put it in the water, roll it around, get it cold, then top off the air again. Your warm breathe will condense as it gets cold from the water and the boat will not be at full pressure. It will save you from getting out and topping it off later

Id bring a tucktek foldable kayak as backup just incase something happens like misplaced knife cuts it, coal jumps from the campfire puts a hole in it, hunting dog gets bored and puts a hole in it ect then that way you have a hard shell kayak to fold out to get back over afew streams or whatever, that may be un passable by foot only . But this is a game changer forsure and I don’t see it getting damaged to easy

I remember the podcast on HuntTalk Podcast a while back with the designer at Orion Coolers and Jackson Kayaks (his name escapes me right now) and speaking to him about using water to access certain areas after deer or other big game. Him with whitetail in Tennessee or you with mule deer here in Montana. He should have designed a true hunting kayak and call it The Big Fin after you. But as I know from owning an 11 ft sit on top kayak they are heavy and take up space in your rig and with the RAPTOR having a shorter bed than the Titan and you taking a guest and one or two cameramen with you often these pack rafts definitely make sense. Now you have Wilderness Trail Llamas and Alpacka Rafts, must be something about those family of animals that you like that can extend your hunting days and ways to hunt places that are difficult to access.
You mentioned two adventures already, plus spring bear in Alaska. Now when applying you can be more comfortable scouting on On-X and finding access routes via water to some hunting grounds that you may never have applied for before.
I have seen some other hunters like Brian Call and Ryan Lampers use these on that super high country mule deer hunt from last season and they worked great, I know that they will do the same for the Fresh Tracks Crew. Row Row you boat merrily down the stream.

I picked up one last year. So far I've not used it for its intended purpose, remote trout ponds, but I have made the best of the learning curve. As a whitewater kayaker I've used the raft on some familiar waters and it is amazingly close to my hardshell kayak for surfing and general river running. I wish now I'd bought a different color, mine is yellow, for float hunting ducks.

I saw this video when it first was posted and thought "someday"... now I'm planning for a big travel adventure, dirt biking/ hunting and fishing, this fall/ winter.. and need a boat that will fit within my vehicle limitations: Truck towing a camper, with dirt bikes in bed, no room for a traditional canoe/ jon boat (both of which I already have!) and I'm thinking now is the time to order one of these :)

AS i age float hunting has become a new sport shooting a trophy within 100 yards from the boat or rivers edge is GREAT. I have a lot of fun onxmaps finding that isolated area on state land that is land locked by trail, but a boat will get you there.
I will not rate this boat because i have never used on but my pack rafts have saved me in some really nasty stuff at 15 ponds pack weight.
Enjoy your adventure keep the videos coming you have helped me a lot thanks

We know they are pricey, but all of our packrafts are handmade in Mancos, CO and most of the materials to make them are sourced in the United States as well. Additionally, we back them all with a lifetime warranty on materials, and workmanship and a full service department. We do have less expensive models, that will also work great for hunting such as the standard Classic model.
Also, Andy is right. Check out the Alpacka Raft website and visit the page at the link below if you're looking to rent one for your upcoming hunts: www.alpackaraft.com/rafting/rentals/

Yes, all boats need to be inspected in Montana. Luckily there is no cost and most inspections stations will soon be open around the state, pending current state pandemic orders. Consider calling ahead to schedule inspections at Montana Regional FWP Offices, 406-444-2440 and make sure they are open when you'd like to have your boat inspected.
