This song brings on so many emotions for me now. My father went through chemotherapy for a year and a half. I woke up in the middle of the night from the phone call from my mum in a care home where my father had passed away on the way to visit him in the middle of the night i turned on the radio and this song just started to play. I understand the song is about substance abuse. But even the pain killers my dad was on made him hallucinate and all he wished for was to get better from the drugs kicking in...Love you Ed, you're a channel for many stories around the world. All the best for everyone.

My husband died one month short of 3 years ago, my mom 3 months after my husband. I was there with all 3 of them. You want the drugs to kick in at "that" point. Then, for you, for me, for all of us are left behind, too easy to numb with it. Best to feel everything and let it all flow. I hope you have a lot of loving friends in your life who are helping you right now and for the next year, stay very close. Again, I'm so very sorry for your loss.

i know this song is about substance abuse, but this just reminds me of when i used to self harm. it got to a point where i couldn't really spend a day without locking myself in my bathroom every time i felt bad. it's really hard to believe but it really becomes addictive, since you get a little "kick" when you do it. i couldn't depend on anything but that and it was a really really dark time. thankfully, a year ago i was able to push myself up and tell myself that i was more than what those voices in my head said. i was more than this and i could find something that doesn't harm me to feel okay again. i would stop hurting myself to stop feeling empty. it still gets hard and there are still some triggers, but i keep strong. and for those recovering or the ones that are in the middle of the battle, you're way more than an addiction. whatever it is, it is destroying you and your loved ones and even though you can't really see it now it will hit you all at once. but it gets better and you have to push yourself up sometimes all by yourself, sometimes with help from others. but at the end you only have you, so don't give up on yourself. i love you and i believe in you.

I quite literally just listened to this in his concert, well technically yesterday, in Paris. I only just got home, but this one song. It just hit different in the stadium. The giant build up with the flashing lights, the base that was making your entire body vibrate. It was without a doubt my favourite song this evening. Thank you Ed Sheeran for an amazing show and an even more amazing birthday present from my parents :)

For me, this song is a huge 'trigger' song. As an addict, Ive accepted that there will be things in my life that will challenge my sobriety, but I wonder if Im the only one that feels that hearing this song. For those who haven't experienced addiction, its like trying to explain something to a wall, it can't be done. Not because someone isn't smart enough but because there is a void, a hole in your soul, and addiction is fighting you for your soul. Its a constant pull, even on the best days. It is heaven & it is very much hell. *For those* struggling right now, you never lose yourself completely, there is a piece of you fighting to come back, the person you know you can be, & it is never too late. never. RIP to those that lost the fight, or gave up, I pray your at peace finally, & feel no more pain.

Christel Elaine How long have you been clean? I was like that for the first year or so, but now 2,5 years sober and almost nothing triggers me (heavily). Now they're mostly passing thoughts. Like forx seeing how normal and visible my veins have gotten.. Keep on fighting and remember: even the worst day sober doesn't come close to being as bad as the best day living like an addict.
Thank you for your comment, I have had the experience with addiction but of a very different kind, but still this song does trigger me a bit sometimes. At the moment things have just gone to fucking pieces and am struggling so bad. But this song also calms me as it reminds me of the damage I did to my self and to not go down that path again.

Finally understand the meaning behind this song, and I have never felt so heartbroken for someone. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Ed's point is that he turned to drugs in hope it would make him happier, but it hasn't. (Fading out again, I feel the chemicals burn in my bloodstream, so tell me when it kicks in.)
Charlotte Stack Most of his lyrics are about an ex or a loved one, so the chance are very good/bad that you are correct, depending how you see things. But I do agree with your interpertation. It's a very deep, emotional song, despite most saying it's a "chill out song". I tend to listen to Ed Sheeran when I feel my depression rising. Somehow his lyrics gets me to understand that I am not alone in this world. It's very helpful, and this song is no exception. It's a wonderful song with, once again, perfectly written lyrics.
I love how he's such a selfish songwriter, he writes songs as a remedy to heal himself, really personal songs that he then shares with the world and tells his story through music. It's just breath-taking

I was in Cambridge visiting the fam and my bro told me to download X on Deezer. I did. I decided to listen to it for the first time on the train back to London. I came across this song. It captivated me from the first listen, the guitar, the harmonies the pure fooking excellence of it. I listened to it about 10 times on the bus home. Now i'm catching up on all the other songs! Man, this song really hit me like a bulldozer. It's Fleetwood Mac, Tracy Chapman, Damian Rice and a bit of old r&b all rolled together. Stunningly good. In my eyes, anyway.
