You need the wave washers under each bumper bolt

My bumper hardware had a ribbed like washer for the rear bumper brackets. The washer had taken up the play in the brackets.

ive only ever rebuilt one car and i remember thinking that when it was painted i was almost finished, how wrong i was.this sort off stuff seems to take forever, but it is very rewarding looking back after every bit is on and done.

+1 on needing the wave washers on each bolt between the inner bumper and bumper bracket. The two screws are for the license plate light/ fuel filler splash rubber shield. It came factory on all mustangs. NPD part # 40427-1B

She continues to come along. I have been trying to figure out the lower bolts on those bumperettes. My original rear valence did not have holes in it for them and neither did the replacement I got back in the 80s.

There should be three holes in the rear body panel for installing the license plate light shield.
Its purpose was to deflect overflow gas from the filler tube away from the license plate lamp preventing a fire. Judges will look for that on any restoration.

Wow! Coming together nicely. Great work Barry.

You're missing the wave washers (4). That is the reason your bumper isn't aligned correctly and looks bent when you torque down the bracket bolts. The after-market bumper is also much more flimsy than the stock unit.

J.D., A little room to work on the Mustang is better than no room to work on a Cadillac. Great job, have a most awesome day!

Hi, it's looking good. Just want to say that the 2 screws are for a rubber dust cover strip which I presume stops rain and dirt off the plate light. My 67 had it.

Looks like the trunk extension experience with grommets was valuable. Looks amazing. I just pulled the bumper of my Cougar and polished it. It is covered in little white dots but looks good from 5-10 feet. Good from far but far from good. Not sure if it will go back on. The bumper bolts had flexy washers between the bumper and the bracket. I clearly should read comments before commenting...

The right kit is 17906-2AK. It has bolts with shorter shoulders and the washers

Thank you Barry, I wonder if new bumpers are thinner gauge than original causing the bolt issue. Lot's of great detail and tricks with the long bolt to doing this yourself without scratching any paint.

I’d be willing to bet that the difference between the old bumper guards and the new ones is the old ones have received a very nasty bump once or twice in their lifetime

Were there no rubber fillers between the ends of the bumper and extension? The cougar has them I wasn't sure if mustangs do

just noticed that the bumper bows upward towards the gas cap. It's doesn't follow the horizontal line of the car. Did you end up fixing that later?

Is there a way to adjust the gap from bumper to quarter extension. On mine, One side is a little less of a gap than the other.
