AIRPORT IN THE SKY | Catalina Island, CA

- Today we’re headed to a remote, privately owned airport on Catalina Island. The island is located roughly 22 miles off the coast of Southern California. It takes about an hour to get there by boat, and 15 minutes by air. The Airport in the Sky runway is a mere 3000 feet in length and sits at the highest point of the island at 1600 feet high. It was recently refurbished in January of 2019.

I flew out of Zamperini Field (TOA) after relocating to CA. Great field, and has a local Civil Air Patrol squadron, which is quite active. Having Special Flight Rules Area over LAX is an easy and wild trip.
Landed at Catalina once - a bit unnerving with its rise in the middle. Oh... refurbished a year ago - does it still have the up-hill (both ways) in the middle?

Let me know when you're up for another Airport in the Sky, KSEZ Sedona's aircraft carrier on a mesa. Already 900 ft agl at runways drop off end, a rush. Airport day has WWll planes, B-17& B-25 and a car show.

The buji config of CR22 is 1/2 mil, yah I wish I had that kind of Blackstone backing :) But I loved the video - been there all the way from the bay area on a C172 - much different experience after 4 hours in a crammed cockpit :)

KAVX is a fun airport to visit and the Buffalo burgers are great. I flew out there in a Tomahawk several years ago. Back then you couldn't see one end of the runway from the other. Is it still the same after the runway renovation? Safe Skies!

$35 landing fee. Restaurant is closed. Website says open. No shuttle to town. $35 just to land! Like a speed trap...
1:15 The airport is actually not at the highest point on Catalina Island.
You didn't show taking off from Catalina, a very cool and sometimes scary experience with the end of the runway being a cliff.
