Putting a Phase Switch in My Jazzmaster | Rhythm Circuit Removed

- This was a fun one, but definitely one of the more ambitious projects I've taken on. Feel free to skip around because this video is very long. You can easily do this mod to your Jazzmaster or Jaguar and the only thing you need to buy is some wire! The resulting sound isn't the most versatile, but it is quite funky

You sir are an excellent teacher. You have simplified the rat's nest of Jazzmaster wiring for a novice dude like me. Excellent presentation!
Thanks!!
Excellent explanation, thanks!
Super cool!! thank you for sharing your beautiful brain and skills with us
Thank you!
Thanks for making this video, I learned a lot and now my JM has a phase switch!
Loving the channel Zach!
Thanks Caleb! I love yours too!!
@@ZachariahConnor course bro thanks mannn
Thank you for going in depth and yet making this content accessible for people like me who know little about electronics. Thoughts about doing this mod on a jazz master with humbuckers? Mine has T tops. I was thinking that the out of phase would yield that Peter Greene sound that is so cool.
Thank you! Of course! I had a Jazzmaster sized humbucker from The Creamery in the bridge of this guitar for a few years. Out of phase with humbuckers would probably sound super good!
Yeah, I'm thinking the phase mod is the way to go.Have had a CV and a Mascis, on which I modded the circuit,- never found any real use for it.Now, I have a Vintera, which I really prefer stock to any of the other models. It's a good way to give it some Strat qualities, - which has been the weapon of choice for a decade, anyway.
Been experimenting with the Reverend bass roll off circuit, as well, which is a must for humbuckers, but likely not so useful with the JM pickups.
Thanks, - nice work.
Over the past 6 years, I tried a dozen different uses for the upper control route. What I ended up settling on is 250k Pots in the lower controls (essentially Tele controls) and the 1M pots in the upper controls. The 250k pots are such a better match for modern round-wound strings, the taper is better, and they can accomodate a Treble Bleed much much better. You'd be surprised how satisfying this configuration is.
I’ve moved to the 500k in the rhythm circuit, sounds better to me. I’ve yet to try 250k in the lead
@@ZachariahConnor I like it because it has a nice taper and cooperates with a Treble Bleed. I could never get the 1M pots to sound good after a 10th of a turn. Keeping the 1M pots in the upper circuit then gives you the original Jazzmaster sound, which can be like a bright boost or a 'blower switch' in this context.
I like your videos
Thank you!!
Im thinking of building a 3 pickup jag with an on-off switch for each pickup and a phase switch for the middle pickup. Maybe have the two roller pots and the master tone pot control 1 individual pickup each, then have a master volume. So many options you can decide on with offsets. The goal is to be able to get jag sounds and strat sounds, while having the best vibrato/trem system ever invented.
I may eventually modify this guitar for a 3rd pickup to do a similar thing...
Can you mod the guitar to go from series to parallel output when both pickups are selected? Maybe keeping the rhythm circuit?
You could, but you would need a different type of switch!
Great video! Have you used the rhythm for a series switch before?
Thank you Shelby! I have not done that yet, but I’d like to at some point
I guess if you wired the rhythm section tone and volume controls to be volume controls for each pick up you would have an “ultra”!😎
I almost did that but it would have been quite a bit more complex
I have the ultra and it comes with a phase switch, which i HATE. Lol kind of ironic i actually want a rhythm circuit. How do i make it rhythm?
Haha I could make a video on that someday
@@ZachariahConnor just curious... Ive seen online that when changing pickups they recommend a 60/40 rosin core solder. Does that sound right? And what gauge?
@@themixmusicandmore6280 honestly it doesn’t really matter what solder you use for the most part. They all seem to work well
How could you made it so tight sound in funk rhythm?
Lots of practice haha. I just messed around for a long time then learned a bunch of vulfpeck songs
@@ZachariahConnor is there any tip to create a perfect clean output sound as yours?
@@ukonj1387 get a compressor! They help tighten stuff up
I’m building a custom Jazzmaster and I’d love to get your input. Can we FaceTime or email?
Sure thing, email me (zachconnor97@gmail.com) I’d love to help!
Thanks for the vid. “Soldering” is joining two metals. Americans, please don’t sodder your guitars. Gross.
Thanks, my spelling isn’t the best
Zachariah Connor nah I’m only joking. I’m going to put this setup in my jm thanks to this vid. My mate is making me one from a piece of cherrywood. I don’t know anything about wiring guitars, but I’m feeling emboldened. 👍
@@andycochrane4131 ah hahaha! Glad it was helpful!! Hope it turns out well!!
