    Great list!
My one thing to add isn't a song. If you've got someone you want to get into progressive metal, if possible, take that person to a prog metal concert. My wife was totally ambivalent to prog metal until she saw Pain of Salvation and Haken live - now she's a big fan. I have a few other friends who've also been on the fence about prog metal and I've dragged them out to Leprous or Caligula's Horse and they've come away very impressed.
The density of the material can, for a lot of people, be a bit off-putting on record, especially in the typically "listening on airpods while paying attention to other things" way many people engage with music. At a concert, the physicality - both of the musicians performing, and the physical feeling of the music being amplified to that level - coupled with the demand that you be fully engaged rather than listening passively, really helps it click for a lot more people.

That's a brilliant idea! I'm very tempted to drag my partner to an evening with Haken later this year, might be fun!

my entry intro progressive metal was Tools Lateralus. My father bought it when it came out, I was probably 11-12 years old. It was mostly the video to Schism that captivated me. My father was mostly listening to Blues Rock, but also amongst his favorites were Jethro Tull, so I was exposed to Prog early

Awesome, I thought I have had a fair delve into progressive metal just to find that almost half this playlist is new to me, great list Iain. More of these videos please - maybe sub genres within prog metal, should make for more wonderful discoveries 😅

Oh I'm planning more of these definitely! I absolutely want to do an "extreme" version, covering things like prog death, doom, black etc :)

This is a very well thought out & detailed list of bands/songs for getting started into this broad genre. Great video. This channel is one of THE best prog metal places for reviews, information, and discovery. I know this is hard work, but its always great stuff. /DeepBow

I think, most metal fans struggle with the vocals ( especially the more traditional vocals of bands like Dream Theater), so they either need more " alternative" vocals ( Tool), or more extreme vocals with cleans sparkled in ( classic Opeth, Ne Obliviscaris)

Set Fire to the Hive is a banger.

The whole album is absolutely amazing, but that track especially is so snappy and instant, I love it!

@@RhymeSignatures I have a pretty different opinion on the album as a whole (the mixing and compression of the cymbals especially), but I've always enjoyed that tune especially.

I loved the video and it would be awesome to see more of this style! 👍I also think it would be cool to see a question and answer sort of thing...live or pre-recorded. Where people give you their Spotify playlists/profiles or just their top 5-10 favorite albums/artists list and you analyze 'em and try to send them in a direction of new artists that they might like. You seem like the perfect guy for that content. Maybe if you're not vibing with it as a series instead like at the end of the video you do it with a few comments...or at the very least around the time of Spotify Wraps. Might drive engagement.. ultimately IDK but, might be worth a try.
Also, I don't know if you realize, but, your twitter and Instagram links aren't working. Might be on my side though idk just wanted to let you know c:
colab with Michael(Notes) when?!? 👀mebbe do the analyses with himm?!? 🤯

Someone asked me what was my favourite genre, I quickly replied PROG METAL and told them about DREAM THEATER, they asked me about other artists in prog metal and I said that I liked Tool, Opeth , QUEENSRYCHE and SYMPHONY X . The only band that I have ALL there albums are DT, now I'm starting to think is it just because of DT that I consider prog metal to be my favourite genre? Another great show.

Dream Theater is undoubtedly the best band overall for getting people into the genre! I wanted something a bit broader though, but if I was to point to any one individual album to get people into prog metal, then Scenes from a Memory is damn near perfect!

Dream Theater got me into prog. Haken, Caligula's Horse and Leprous kept me there. Can pretty much pick prog bands in any direction from Dream Theater. I.e. heavier, more technical, more melodic, more experimental. I think that's why DT is such a staple of prog because they have elements of all of it scattered through a formidable discography.

Just ended up following your profile on Spotify - is a 2023 playlist in the works, if it’s not let me the first to request for one. Curious names of PLs given the content, interesting- maybe a pl tour video?!?!

Thanks for the playlist! Gave you a follow. Prog metal is hard for anyone not already inclined to metal, in my experience. I might try to make a playlist like yours, too. Thanks for all the thought put into this 🤘

Making these kinda things is fun! Always loads of different ways to intro people to the best genre ;)
