I am a christian myself and listen to a lot of black metal. I don't take satanic lyrics that seriously. I don't really like the term 'un-black metal' though. It's just like calling amon amarth viking metal. Genres shouldn't only be determined by their lyrics imo.
One of my favorite christian black metal albums must be The Forsaken by Antestor. It actually has hellhammer on drums :D

I'm Christian and I enjoy metal music, although not black metal so much, if I'm honest. The people who say that they are Christian and take on a holier-than-though attitude really irritate me, because they are so set in their "rules" and how they think a Christian should act that they refuse to accept how someone like me can believe in Jesus and listen to Alice Cooper, who also happens to be Christian. We do exist. And I believe that everyone has the right to choose what they believe in, whether I agree or not. It's not my place to force my thoughts or beliefs on others. That's how I feel, anyway. :P

Good video. I'm a Christian and I'm a metal fan (black metal is actually my favorite subgenre). There's no reason why Christianity and metal shouldn't get along. I've always believed any type of music is based on the characteristics of it's sound and not an ideology. I'm a bit surprised metal hasn't progressed to the point where it's no longer generally regarded as anti-Judeo-Christian.

I honestly dont think that most people who call themselves christian truely believe that shit in the bible in literally real, how could they. Its 2017 and we dont need myths to explain things anymore. Its an archaic remanent from the past whose lifespan ran out a long time ago. They actually believe in a virgin birth and that is not even the most whacked non nonsensical impossible thing they believe. Again, its 2017 and if you dont understand that sex is required to make a child then you should just check out, of life that is

Not all Christians belief everything in the Bible in a literal sense and thats not a new thing. Non-literal interpretations of different parts of scripture dates back to the earliest days of Christianity. Whereas Christian fundamentalism in its modern form only dates back to the late 19th century. (though there were problems in Christianity before that of course)

The Bible is filled with very dark, disturbing stories. I am not exactly part of this metal culture stuff, but one song I do immediately recall is "Creeping Death" by Metallica, telling that sick story from the PoV of the spirit that killed the first born of Egypt. There are videos and web sites talking about specific heavy dark stories. Abrahamic books all have dark side stories, contrary to the starry eyed love and light conduct of many followers. This coming from a former Christian.

Nah, God wouldn't mind, I say this as a Christian myself. The Bible says the only unforgivable sin is refusing to be forgiven for sin. Things like listening to metal, being gay, and other stuff that most churches are again are completely and totally okay, really. Heck with it, the Bible even has passages that say something like, "He came from the womb and became man." If you think about it, it's pretty much supporting abortion. My religion largely *doesn't even know its own damn Bible.*

+Pale Horse of the Apocalypse Very true, my friend. I am a Christian and a metalhead, and the thing that I don't understand is why Christianity and metal can't intertwine. After all, music was a creation by God, and just because someone uses that creation a little differently, that doesn't automatically make it satanic. As for Christians not knowing the Bible, that's because a lot of Christians refuse to read it for themselves and get their own understanding. They'd rather let some pastor (who's already gathered his own understanding and is far from perfect just like us) tell us what we should think it means, and that's not how it should be. But hey, to hell with reading and thinking, right?

I see the topic of faith theology and tradition as intrinsically tied together within the genre of metal, and metal offers a platform that embraces all view points for the sake of embodying the discussion.

I don't really care for the distinction of 'white' metal, or 'unblack' metal. If it has the same depth and intensity of bands that don't believe in any religion, or are 'satanic', then why does it need yet another subgenre inside of a subgenre. I used to be a more practicing christian, now i'm more lax with it and don't have all those beliefs, and i still like the same bands. christian and non christian ones. i like it for the music. though honestly i don't dig bands that are real weirdly graphic with lyrics, like cannibal corpse or six feet under (and any other gross lyric'd band like that) cause it just isn't pleasing to me. but i like bands that are 'secular' and ones that are 'christian'. cause i think they sound good

Great video. I can however 100 percent why people would think christian black metal is weird and why they would hate on it, as black metal was made souley for that reason.
However they are forgetting one aspect and this would distort their hatred. This is the fact that in the end of all, black metal is the true expression of the soul. The music speaks the truth in the way. And for a christian to explain it's true beliefs in the music, more power to them. I would rather see the truth in music then some bullshit they don't believe in for shock value. This is from a satanic point of view.
Let a christian be true and express itself honestly rather then a Satanist being full of shit and faking it just for shock value.

White metal. Unblack metal. Those terms are ridiculous and this video terminology is highly inaccurate and outdated. MUSIC genres should not be named for their LYRICS. Yes, Horde started it with their "Hellig Ugsvart" (Holy Unblack) album, but that's no reason to coin an all new music term.
I'm speaking as a current Christian black metal musician with multiple albums under my belt. I can't STAND those terms and I'm not alone. People don't call blues music with positive lyrics "unblues" or "oranges" - why do that with black metal? Metal is punny enough so whether the black metal band talks about Satan, Jesus, space, trees, mythology, etc. its all BLACK METAL, not something separate!

Overtly Satanic imagery in metal really took root in the NWOBHM with Angelwitch, Witchfynde, Venom (of course), and Witchfinder General. Then it went from there with Mercyful Fate (of course), Slayer (early), and Sabbat (Japan). Euronymous thought it would be a good idea (big mistake) to take it to the next level with actual violence against Christian institutions. I myself am not Christian, but have been a fan of Christian power metal like Bloodgood, Sacred Warrior, and Kreyson, because they were actually really good. Also, King Diamond and Glenn Benton aren't really practicing satanists nowadays, but align more with classical humanism.

Christian metal is a perversion of the entire concept of heavy metal. Metal used to stand for being anti-establishment and against conformity. Being a christian is the epitome of conformity and accepting a system of controls that is based on the fear of eternal damnation. It makes no sense. I mean, I get the guys in those bands love making metal music and all that. It's just infusing the music with any kind of organized religion defeats one of the fundamental aspects of, not just metal but, rock music in general. That being the rebellion of the current system. Satanism and metal go well together because a true satanist worships themselves and feeds whatever desires they might have without the regard of society's rules or how society views them. Christianity, not so much.

It is meant to be counter-cultural and anti-establishment as well, but it has become very clouded and perverted by the people who wanted to make it systematic. idk, but I don't think they are totally unaligned. they don't necessarily make sense together, but they are not incompatible.

I think when it comes down it, a lot of christians who make metal were listening to sabbath, maiden, slayer etc growing up instead of hating on metal like other christians. These guys were probably ostracized by their communities and families for listening to the music just like any metalhead. And nowadays they are ostracized by both religious people and anti-religious metalheads.

Antestor is such a great band. If you're looking for decent "black/unblack/extreme/blackened/death" metal bands, I highly recommend,
    Antestor. (Black metal)
Mortification (the old stuff from the early 90's. Self-titled, Scrolls of the Megiloth, Post-momentary Affliction). (Death Metal)
    Frosthardr. (Black Metal)
    Slechtvalk. (Blackened Death Metal)
    Horde. (Black Metal)
Becoming the Archetype. (Modern Death Metal)
Thanks for being rational about this subject. I find it hilarious that the only two genres of music that catagorize themselves by lyrical content are extreme metal music and christian music. One is anti-Jesus and the other is pro-Jesus. I wish music was defined by sound rather than message. Down-tuned, aggressive with low growls? You might be death metal! Buzzsaw guitar tone, 3/4 time, blast beats, and shrill vocals? You might be black metal! Easy.

I think the reason this has specifically become a thing within black metal as a genre is because the earliest bands that were widely recognised as black metal were either openly pagan/satanic or otherwise anti-christian, particularly given that black metal became so synonymous with the black circle in norway after the vikernes trials and the media storm that followed it, so a lot of people define black metal not based on its sound but on it's lyrical content/ideals. To each his own though honestly, some people really care about their music having lyrical content that promotes their ideals and some people are happy to listen to anything that sounds good to their ear

Isn't Batushka more like blasphemic orthodox?

      @jakubzdzienicki4836 Před 8 lety +1

+King DOOB They made a music video to Yekteniya 1 if I'm not mistaken, and it's quite blasphemous actually

Yeah, everyone is saying these are perversions of real litanies from the Christian orthodox. I'd like to believe the lyrics are actually all that, because it's quite cool. Ever since Batushka, I've been getting into the deeper, serious side of worship in black metal.

Orthodox in this sense means orthodox Satanism not orthodox Christian!

Yes, I believe that's correct in the black metal sense.

Ozzy is Christian, look up the lyrics to after forever but he wasn't afraid to use darker and doomier lyrics aswell I'm also a Christian metal listener and don't have any problem listening to many lyrics of bands like slayer, etc. Love your channel btw, congrats on all these new subs!

im a christian and i am a huge metal head, i wasnt going to comment anything untill you said something about war of ages. ive seen them in concert a few times and ive noticed that there is absoloutley no difference from a christian metal concert and a metal concert. ive been told by my teachers at my school(private school) and people at my church that im not allowed to listen to metal because it doesnt glorify God... but kids who listen to rap or pop or any shit like that dont get told that kinda stuff. imo the metal community is a family, wether you listen to Pirate metal, nu metal or black metal we all can agree that every genre is AWESOME!

Im a Christian, i attend church and everything, but im also a pretty devoted metalhead. I listen to lots of black metal and (brutal slam) death metal. Also, i listen to some grindcore and skater punk. Anyways, because of the gory shirts and black metal shirts with inverted pentagrams and what not, people at my church and school look down on me and act like they think im a satanist. Also, im very introverted which makes it even worse, and everyone seems like they think im a psychopath or a satanist. I hate how that happens. I just want to listen to music that reflects my feelings but stay a Christian, but it seems that my friends and family dont want that

The movie maimhaus really helped me with this though, as seeing the priest listening to black metal and saying that Jesus himself was an outcast. Made me feel like i can still be Christian and metalhead

Great video man. One thing I find obnoxious is when the Metal community assumes that Christian themed bands can't be dark or heavy sounding when the themes have nothing to do with sound. Zao and Extol for example are some of the darkest sounding bands I can think of and they happen to be Christian bands. Sometimes I feel like the Metal community needs to grow up. It seems like the Metal community attacks Christianity way more than Christianity attacks Metal but that's just what I've seen.

MAclean, how about a video about Paganism ( of all tradtions ) in metal?

Remembering back to my 4 years of Christianity, there was a big thing within the Christian metal fans that "satanic", pagan, etc music had an evil spiritual element to it, and would cause one spiritual harm. That's why many Christian metal fans avoid non-Christian metal. I got out of it years ago, but at least I found Virgin Black back in those days.

I was always kinda confused because I've always though some of the hymns and other songs my church sings would make great power metal , but you mention it around some people and they bite your head off.
