    Many people have noticed how the lighting looks different in the side by side comparisons. I noticed this as well when putting the footage together and I assumed the difference was because the ALR screen is designed to absorb ambient light and prevent it from bouncing around whereas just having the white wall, the light is free to bounce around and reflect everywhere. However, I'm certainly a novice when it comes to filming and some great suggestions came in to make sure iso and white balance is set manually which I will certainly try doing in future videos to see if that makes a difference! There is no financial benefit to me if you buy the screen.

      Or you could have rotated the ALR screen vertically to cover only half of the wall. Then, project the video half onto the ALR and the other half on the wall. This way you could control other variables. Also, make sure the ambient light source is at the center.

    Hi Chris!
    As others have mentioned, it looks like your camera may have had auto white balance and auto iso turned off.
    As you move forward, to keep everything consistent, it will be a good idea to manually set the values for ISO and White Balance.
    Some search terms you can use on CZcams would be, “How to film in Manual Mode”, “How to Color Correct”, or “How to Color Match”.
    Thank you again for the amazing videos and I look forward to the next one!

      Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! This was my first video like this so I certainly have a lot to learn and room for improvement so I love the feedback! Do you think since the ALR screen is designed to absorb ambient light and stop it from bouncing around the room would make a difference? When putting the videos together side by side I noticed how the shots looked different even in the same lighting conditions but I just assumed it was because the screen was doing its job. I'm curious if you think that would make a difference or if its purely a difference in iso and white balance?

    • @EvanWasHere
      @EvanWasHere Před rokem +3

      @@ChrisMaherDIY In automatic mode, the screen and light reflecting from it will 1000% change the settings on your camera. In Manual mode from ISO, Shutter, & Aperture, the light from the room will not change. While the screen may change any reflected light (acting as a bounce), it would not effect the wall on the sides of the screen (See my channel for my experience with lights/cameras). The wall being lit differently in your comparison shots was the effect of automatic exposure in the camera.
      On another note, I am a subscriber of your channel and love the video quality and content. I have been using LEDs in my home for over a decade (czcams.com/video/1B3gXac-z1c/video.html) and am in the process of buying a home in Miami and will be borrowing a lot of the technique's you pointed out for new LED installation (including those awesome acrylics) and a 150" ALR screen, so your videos are great research for me.

      @@ChrisMaherDIY Actually.. I take back part of that.
      Because the UST light hits a painted wall, it will reflect (bounce) onto the ceiling and surrounding walls. This light MAY then bounce back and hit the wall around the border of where you are projecting on the wall.
      An ALR screen won't bounce as much light as it's not as reflective as paint.
      Still, shooting in manual so all the shots match will keep the test as fair as possible.

    • @mrsmayonaise
      @mrsmayonaise Před rokem

      Shooting automatic is kind of the fair test here. Automatic adjusts the settings so you have rich midtones and you don't lose details. The histogram tells you all you need to know. Even in manual.
      Test: Take a screenshot. Adjust the right side to the depth of shadow on the left side. Comparre the detail and midtones on the sideboard and look for that reflection on the ceiling.
      Compare the colors on the screen. Compare the histogram.
      Test 2: Look at the sideboard's surface. Compare both sides. The difference between the sides is significantly smaller than between both sides of the ceiling. 17:59 the sideboard is even brighter on the left, probably due to the blue light reflected from the ALR, while the ceiling is clearly shadow. Right side: blurry sideboard, mostly yellowish.
      While saying the same manual setting gives a more comparable picture, the change in the appearance of luminant areas already speaks volumes. And having a more than comparable experience shooting with a RED camera in an uncanny similar setting, in my opinion, there is no such one manual setting that allows you a fair comparison without either over- or underselling either the projector or the ALR. Cause reflections caused by projectors are crazy on camera.
      Xou are both great though and thanks a lot for the video as much as for the input :)

      Light or white surfaces reflect light. That screen is not just grey color. It has little almost like mirrors in it that reflects the light from the sides and the ceiling BACK TO THE VIEWER.
      Whereas the white wall doesnt do anything so light reflects off the walls and washes out the screen.

      @Blamkrotch Před rokem

      Don’t ceiling mount a ust projector. The clr screen is designed to reject light from above, so you would need to mount the screen upsidedown to prevent the projector from pointing at the black parts of the ridges. If you for sure are ceiling mounting, you need a regular screen and you could get it in grey to help a little with boosting the black levels.

    • @ZyaLuke
      @ZyaLuke Před rokem

      The ALR screen just needs flipped and yeah it won't block light from above but I never turn my ceiling lights on anyways so that's not really an issue for me. And from the research I've done, ALR screens (for UST's) are specifically designed to get the best picture quality out of a UST and will look significantly better than traditional long throw screens. (Not that those screens look bad or anything)
      It may not block ambient light quite as well flipped over but otherwise still should work and be the best option for a UST projector.

I'm honestly not sure if that's because the camera was not exactly set the same or if its because with the white wall, there is so much more light bouncing around since there is no ALR screen to absorb a lot of the light. When the screen was up, and the lights were set the same, the room was for sure darker compared to the same lights being on and no screen if that makes sense! Thanks so much for watching!

      Thanks for watching! I tried having everything set the same but it does look a little different in some of the comparisons. Good observation and I hope to be able to run more controlled comparisons down the road since I love the home theater type products!

    Dude. Your projector is in dynamic(Bright) mode on the right side: 05:36.
    Red weapon is painted yellow because of that. (Red+Green = Yellow)
    And at the lit environment lighing is not equal. 07:32
    Footage with ALR screen is in less ambient light environment. Looks like on the right its 100% and on the left its 50%.

    Yeah thanks but no thanks. I thought something was edited/processed in post, and then it really popped at about the 6:40 mark. Does your room autofocus and get darker for the ALR half of the screen? Show us an actual side by side comparison or you'll find a lot of people unfollowing. This hopefully was an "honest" mistake to make the ALR screen pop.
    For reference, I own a BENQ 7050i UST projector on a flat white wall, and 4K is glorious in a near-dark/dark room. Like take your breath away, staring at the image from a foot away and being gobsmacked at the detail, glorious. Either this projector sucks or something is really off in post-production to make the "4K" image look so washed and out of focus.

      Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! I'll have to take a look at the BENQ! I've heard great things about that one. I do see what you mean! I could be wrong but I just assumed that the video I took with just the wall looked brighter in the same lighting conditions compared to the screen because the screen is designed to absorb ambient light and not let it bounce around the room and the white wall is reflecting everything. Similar to if I shine a flashlight at a wall that painted black compared to a wall that is painted white. Im pretty sure I had auto focus off but maybe not? This was my first video like this and I hope to improve in all areas of filming if I do another one down the road! Other than having 2 identical projectors set up at the same time and the space to record the wall and the screen at the same time, do you have any suggestions on how to do a good comparison video? I'm very new at this an appreciate any and all feedback!

      Thanks so much for watching and the feedback! I'm still not entirely sure on the difference. It for sure could be camera settings but since I thought everything was the exact same, I'm not ruling out the possibility that the difference was just simply from the fact that the ALR screen is designed to reduce the amount of ambient light bouncing around the room. So even in the same lighting conditions, I would expect the room to look very different. But that's just me trying to make sense of things and I realize I could be wrong on that. I'm for sure wanting to do another side by side video but this time make sure 100% that camera settings are the same! Thanks again for watching and hope you had a great Christmas!
