As a physics teacher I can tell you that this episode is possibly the best introduction to high school kids of why the square term in the kinetic energy equation matters. I show it after we've studied Newton's laws (which they use to explain the episode, as most viewers remember those from middle school) and before we talk about energy and then refer back to it after we've done the work energy theorem.

    If you saw the full episode you'd know that two cars hitting head on, both moving at 50mph does the same damage to both cars as one car going 50mph hitting a brick wall (NOT 100mph worth of damage). Reason being: both cars hitting each other are both absorbing roughly equal amounts of impact force (if they are the same car). Each car has a crumple zone (the front end) that absorbs the impact.

    I went to highschool with 2 guys who were killed in a 100+ mph crash into a tree. Similar damage. They were of course drinking. Car went off side of road on a slight turn and struck tree on right front passenger side driving tree all the way back to package tray above read seat. Bent the car into nearly a 90, knocked driver side door off knocked steering column and dashboard out of the car, threw the engine down the road. The front passenger bucket seat was smashed into the rear. They hauled that car around on a trailer to all our local schools for a year. I looked at it once but did not want to look at it again. Made me sick to my stomach at the time since I knew those guys. The force and level of damage at those speeds both to a vehicle as well as it's occupants is as bad as one can imagine. I see this video and memory of it comes right back even though it happened in 1969.

    August 15th is the three year anniversary of my car accident. To this day I can't sit in a passenger seat or feel a seatbelt across my chest in that position. We hit a tree at 100 mph. The full story is on my page. But I have struggled so much. I was diagnosed with PTSD right after making my video about the accident. I never know what to think when seeing stuff like this. I saw and remember everything. Had a good two seconds to realize I was about to be obliterated. Those two seconds man...WHY I got "embrace every second" tattooed on my arm. Too bad my PTSD prevents me from doing so. It's so fucked up. A man in my area died instantly from a very similar crash only a month after mine. Has absolutely tortured me since. Why us? Why did they die and we got to walk away? It has truly haunted me. I felt my neck almost snap the tissue in my right breast is permanently damaged just from the seatbelt trying to hold me to the seat, my back swells up everyday and I have severe constant spasms. And most people don't even get that? They just fucking die. We were conscious to talk to emergency personnel. They looked like they were talking to ghosts. I could go on for hours about the horrors of the accident and of my PTSD. I can honestly say the PTSD has been worse than the crash itself, simply because it has forced me to relive it. If anyone you know is struggling with PTSD please support them the best you can, you can't see their wounds but they can feel them and believe me they need you. My biggest question always remains though why the fuck did we survive going 100 mph into a tree in a fucking Saturn ion airbags never even deployed and we all WALKED away!? People say it was a miracle but I can't find anything in it honestly. One of the other passengers ended up being a rapist. Another started doing meth after the crash (he really was a good guy just had so many troubles and no way to cope properly). The driver got busted doing 100 mph again. And I just developed a gruesome lifelong disease that stops me from living this second chance at life. The whole thing is sickening and depressing. I see no reason why any of us had a reason to live through it. I'm having a very hard time coming up to the anniversary.

    • @mariahfish7646
      @mariahfish7646 Před 7 lety

      MrSupercar55 I don't understand it either, the science of it says we should be dead. But these are the facts of the accident. While we were talking to police they measured the skid marks it was 220 feet. They said to make that kind of mark we had to be going 120 mph on impact and that we should all be dead. The other people in the car fought with me saying we were going 110. But I had looked over at the speedometer barely five seconds before we came upon the curve and hit the tree. We were right at 100. The car did not decelerate at all. Driver tried to drop from fifth to first in half a second and the car died we just glided straight into the tree at the same speed. Thank you for your concern but yes like Rito said it is somehow possible to survive crashes like this. A girl I went to high school with recently went down the wrong way on the freeway and when she got up to 100 mph she hit three different cars. She was the only one who died. Everyone else was okay except for one car who's two people had severe injuries. It's possible. It's not common and it doesn't make sense but it's obviously happened.

    @jimmypbrockman Actually, you are correct in your calculation. The forces involved in the 100mph collision are also doubled, so the two collisions are not the same. Because a decent wall doesn't give way, all the energy and forces are exerted back on the crashing car (Newton's third law). So the single car at 100mph would experience twice the force than two cars at 50mph. In case of the two cars, they receive the force of impacting a wall at 50mph, not 100mph. They also said this on the show.

    There's a photo floating around the 'net of a crash from many years ago involving some guys I knew. Over 100 mph into a tree. Hit at right front corner of car and drove the tree all the way back to rear package tray above rear seat. Front end removed from car and engine flung further down the road. All within nanoseconds. Seriously bad shit.

    @1dorer Před 12 lety

    @FadoDeo4444 Nope. Whether you are stopped quickly by a brick wall or by an oncoming car, the damage done to your car is only a function of your speed. So, 50 mph into an oncoming 50 mph car (of equal mass) has the same effect on you as 50 mph into a brick wall. BTW, if your speed is 2 times greater (100 mph) before stopping suddenly, then the damage you suffer is roughly FOUR times greater; that's because the ENERGY of the collision varies with the square of your speed change in stopping.

    @FadoDeo4444 Oh wait... I'm sorry. Now I see what you're asking. But the answer is still "nope" because of that "energy varies with the square of speed" business that I mentioned earlier. A 100-mph car hitting a brick wall involves twice as much total energy as two 50-mph equal-mass cars colliding head-on.

    We wonder the same thing. The Metric system a huge pain. Trying to go by mm instead of inches for everything doesn't work out too well. It is like taking little baby steps. KM is an odd measurement for mileage. Why? The mile is 5,280 feet. The kilometer? Equal to one thousand meters. That's a ridiculous way to measure it. Kilogram? 1 kilogram = 2.20462262 pounds. So every time a kilogram is mentioned, for every 5kg, that's an additional pound. We just say 2 pounds and are done with it.

    @FadoDeo4444 ... Nope. Hitting an oncoming car (and coming to a complete stop) is just as damaging as hitting the proverbial "brick wall" and coming to a complete stop. It's the "coming to a complete stop" (in the same very-short amount of time) that is the key. Newton's second law of motion guarantees it.
