I've recently been working my way through a writing style guide totally in Spanish to improve my own broken Spanish and it has helped loads! In the beginning it was difficult to understand, but I eventually got the hang of it. It really helped me understand how to more naturally construct complex sentences so I'm not stuck sounding like a basic robot. Maybe something like that in German would help you too?

I recommend Deutsche Welle for video content and quizes that correspond to whatever level you are. They have videos on CZcams that go all the way to late B2 early C1. There are several other CZcams channels I like that are just native speakers making videos, but at my level I don't understand most of what they say. I have been using some print resources as well as slow German podcast, but for more advanced practice you could see if you have a German speakers or expats group on Meetup in your area. We have a few here in Boston, as well as a polyglot group that practices multiple languages with native speakers of those languages. For structured learning I've also been using the lingoda website, which is small group or one on one video meetings with native speakers. You could try some of those to up your level. Per class is really cheap and I've never had more than three other students in my classes (some group classes end up being solo too). Typical class size at my level has been me and one other person.

I didn't use Assimil for German but have for other languages (but always as a supplement to a more conventional course book). For Upper Intermediate, I've used Mittelpunkt. There's stacks of audio-visual for all levels on the Deutsche Welle website, if you google Deutsche Welle Deutsch lernen you'll get there.

I would say self tutoring is difficult.Atliest for the basic level A1one must take classes to put the basics right. There are two advantages one you get a good head start and Goethe format Deutsche als Fremdsprache courses use a well structured Book for learning so that you learn stepwise and contextwise. After A1 self learning us easy as German us generally read as it's written unlike English. I would recommend Themen Aktuelle and Klett by Heuber Verlag and Langenscheidt as these are books from German course designers and boy they have engineered them well. Audio Video inclusive. One has to reach B1 level to get some fluency in speech.

    When I first started:
the free (now outdated) German language course that was used by the Foreign Service Institute; the old Aufenhalt in Deutschland textbook (2 volumes)
What I am using now for listening practice with transcript:
For short passages of dialogue: A1/A2 - Prüfungsvorbereitung
    czcams.com/video/5SzXeTOCnbU/video.html
to be followed by similar listening practice videos
What I am using now for longer passages of dialogue for listening practice with transcript::
    Deutsch lernen mit Dialogen
    czcams.com/video/WyAAn64NkPg/video.html
to be followed by similar listening practice videos
What I used first for reading practice:
the children's novel - Emil und die Detektive
What I am using now for reading practice:
    - The first 12 volumes of Asterix comics German language edition along with the English language version
    - The German translation of Bill Bryson's book Notes from a Small Island: Reif for die Insel, England for Anfänger und Fortgeschrittene, along with the original English edition
All input for now for me, I'm afraid

These would be my worse books for German. Although I do like the way your voice goes all croaky at the end of a sentence.
    Thank you

Jeez, I hate that "vocal fry" that so many young women use. That and their nasal quacking drives me up a wall. I wonder if they carry it over when speaking in a foreign language...?

The505Guys you may start European language studies using the common European Framework (CEFR), from A1 to C2. Search for A1 textbooks and workbooks, with audio listening and writing exercises, and also a grammar book on upper levels. Type “Deutsch A1” on Amazon and you will find good examples.

If you stick to these books, your German will never improve. I watched your 2020 video where you speak - you are not even close to lower intermediate level. Instead of these kind of books you should work with "Schritte", "Aspekte" and so on. These books are designed for people learning German in Germany and have more vocabualry, exercises, grammar explanations, audio content. Furthermore you should find someone to practise with to tighten what you learn.

I’m guessing this video and that German video you watched might be some of the first videos you watched from me so I’ll clarify some stuff just in case other new people come across this comment! This video is from 2018, I finished these books a long while ago and don’t really use textbooks or courses anymore for my German, it’s all using native content and talking things over with my tutor.
I’d be interested in knowing what it is that gave you that impression of my German from my 2020 video! I have an intermediate level based on some placement tests and also the views of multiple tutors, but those are also people that have a better gauge of my speaking etc than just in a short video filmed after not speaking for a long time, so I’d love to know what I could improve!
I’m not really using textbooks anymore as I said, but I’ll check out the 2 you recommended!

Also, I don’t ever recommend sticking with the same resources forever. It’s always important to have your materials and methods grow alongside you so you can continue to improve.
